TS: Queen vs Rush

OK I knew this guy once who...fit the West Can session-guy thing all over, ponytail, gut, nodding acq w/ Bob Rock etc., said re Rush "Roll the Bones" - "See, they're taking a totally inferior music form [I think he meant 'rap'] and showing what really talented people can do with it, heh heh!" Like 'they're dispatching the competition with ease at their own game!' Now this is the kind of statement based on so many questionable premises that it's not even worth debating (more of an unintentional 'This-is-where-I'm-coming-from' thing, you know, why argue?) However, if he had said the same thing re Queen's "Sheer Heart Attack"(song not alb) and 'punk', I probably would've agreed!
And if it was the same thing re "Dust"/"Ogre Battle"/"Killer Queen"/"We Will Rock You" and 'AOR disco'/'metal'/'glam'[intel end cf Bowie, Hunter]/'glam'[retard end, cf Slade/Glitter], I would've said, "Well I actually happen to like those genres, but I agree Queen was pretty fucking good at them"

Actually an even funnier description of 'RtB' (which I CANNOT FUCKING STAND btw) from Neil Peart - "valid musical gumbo"!!! (A Latvian Dr John tribute?)

"sheer heart attack" the alb --
haven't heard it inna fucking long time, but it certainly was an inseparable part of the soundtrack accompanying my high school years (even more than that, it must be among those rock/pop records i've listened to the greatest number of times, along with "physical graffiti")

"sheer heart attack" the song --
horribly lame play acting, not just dud but turd

...rush? after circa 78-79, hardly noticed that they still existed

Queen...extremely well rounded band, great songwriting, incredible singer, the guitarist's sound remains instantly recognisable, and the rhythm section worked together well as a unit to create a truly professional sound.
Rush is bombastic, pretentious, pompous and indulgent. All very good musicians but they don't write songs; they string licks together, throw goofy lyrics and lame melodies together and will their mishmash to be considered as music. They consistently fail at this.

Freddie Mercury was a rock god, Rush were just gay! ^*

(* N.B. This is a joke. Happening young things use the word 'gay' as a catch-all for anything they believe deserving of disrespect. You may now safely laugh. Thank you.)

I do like them both, but Rush will never have the chutzpah, camp humour, penchant for rock chaos and sheer, unbriddled personality that Queen had in spades.

Oh dear. I really want to stick up for Rush because I fear this will be a massacre but I don't actually know Queen well enough to judge. They may have been better. I heard Night At the Opera some ten years ago and I know the radio hits. While I do like Geddy Lee, I'll allow that Freddie Mercury was a much better singer and that Queen had better lyrics. I suspect that Rush are much better instrumentalists (and I do think their good stuff is well put together) but I haven't listened to enough Queen to really say. Queen never became unlistenable like Rush did for years. They also did have that campy wit and all the stuff Alex said while Rush have the lamest sense of humour of anyone in the world. I'm sure that if Queen was going to incorporate an animated dragon into their stage show it would look impressive rather than goofy. I mean to pick up some Queen at some point. I don't know yet if I'll like any of it as much as "Red Barchetta" or the "Anthem" riff or the middle of "The Trees". But I might. I'll just say that Rush have at least 8 good studio albums and 1 great live album and you seem to be basing this comparison on one of their worst songs ever (though, yes, I see your point). Also, I've always kind of got this weird fascist vibe off Queen which I never get from Rush WHATEVER THEIR LYRICS MIGHT SAY. Also that while Rush probably influenced more crap bands on balance, Voivod is better than Def Leppard. And while empowering queers is probably a worthier cause at the end of the day than empowering geeks, well, someone's got to stand up for geeks.

Queen's "Sheer Heart Attack" is unbridled greatness. Of course it isn't a "real" punk song, but musically, how many other classic rock bands could've pulled that off? See also "Stone Cold Crazy". At the end of the day, Queen are one of the few bands who could really say "we can do what you do, but you can't do what we do." However, I never had to listen to them rap, so you never know.

As far as Rush vs them, I say Queen wins 8 times out of 10. Rush has them in the sci-fi dept (at least in the 70s), and marginally in the chops dept (though I'll still take May over Lifeson anytime). Where Queen leaves them in the dust is in the fact that Rush has been trying to crossover into the mainstream for about 20 years now with almost no success. In 1975, Queen releases their most roccoco, bombastic piece of pie ever, and goes multi-platinum. *This is also my argument for why Rush should still be playing space epics.

I like Rush best. Some worthless charver fux0r snapped thee aerial off my car, so I made a prog rox0r mixtape to play whilst sitting fuming in traffick jam next to "angel of the North" watching mother fucking yuppie arseholes in TT (look at me! i can't afford a 911!@#) driving dangerously BECAUSE THEy THINK THEY@RE BETTER THAN YOU B/C THEIR CAR WAS MORE XPENSIVE FOR FUXAKE. Prog rock is great driving musick because it makes you feel really uptight. Anyway, on this tape are a coupla Rush numberz, "Spirit of Radio", and Xanadu. My god, what a wonderful track "Xanadu" is! I actually sing along (badly) w/it in the car & get a sore throat as a consequence ov Geddy's high voice. To the best of my knowledge, Queen have never once come close to "Xanadu", so Rush 0\/\/|\|z, I think.
