Realistic violence. More generally, realistic moral no-exit situations. Ugly reality, circa the tops of 70s film. Pop is where its at, but the whole pop terrain could stand to be less insulasr, and more far-reaching. Not Kid A wankery either, not "artistic statements" but engagement with reality.

Said it before, say it again. Charles Schulz, rest in peace. A hero for our times -- got ideas of alienation, despair and perservance across to a wider audience than the entirety of the 'great' writers, poets and musicians (and more) of the 20th century, all with wry humor to match.
