Girls Aloud micturate over One True Voice!

"Sound Of The Underground" is the sort of record Pete Waterman USED to be capable of producing (Mel & Kim etc.) - fabulous and terrific. Whereas "Sacred Trust" (doesn't that title alone put you off?) is a tired trudge which shows (a) how flabby and complacent Waterman has become; and (b) how much he needed Stock and Aitken. Thus Girls Aloud DESERVE to be #1 for Xmas. A last-minute surge of support for the Cheeky Girls would be fine by me, but doubtless the drippy boys will win through with the Saturday afternoon Top Shop mob.

Anyone wishing to argue the case for One True Voice (sounds like a Food Records band from about 1996?), please do so...

i was wondering when someone would finally start a thread on this. the girls should and will get the #1; walsh has been clever in not taking the boys on with a ballad as that would have been a battle they probably wouldn't have won. having said that, at the prices i'd rather take a little each way interest in love inc. "you're a superstar" at 33/1.

Girls Aloud are mashing OTV in the Smash Hits/Box request chart, two OTV songs have had 35% of the requests, leaving the girls with 65%! (Though TATU are number one in the box tops chart)

I think the Cheeky Girls have added teh dreaded sleigh bells to their song.

OTV's song reminds me of something, I just can't quite pinpoint it.

Does anyone know if the midweek chart is online anywhere? That'd be a good indication, I'm hoping Brian Harvey and Avril both beat OTV and that Oasis bloke.

This from BBC News:

"Pop band Girls Aloud have taken a small lead in the battle of bands created by ITV1's Popstars programme, unofficial sales figures show.
The girl group's single Sound of the Underground is about 8,000 copies ahead of their rivals' single, Sacred Trust.

The two bands were chosen by viewers of the ITV show and released debut singles simultaneously.

Midweek sales figures suggest Girls Aloud have sold in excess of 30,000 copies.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said : "First day sales around the country show Girls Aloud have delivered the first blow in the race for the Christmas number one."

The girl group are favourites to come out on top after bookmakers switched their predictions for the coveted Christmas chart prize.

Simon Dornan, spokesman for Virgin Megastores, said: "As predicted the girls have taken an early lead after first day sales and the difference in sales between the two singles is wider than expected.

"The girls have produced an original record which appeals to both boys and girls alike, and not just teenagers either."

The groups will spend the week campaigning for fans' allegiances with a string of public appearances and publicity stunts.

The boy band's song is expected to fall slightly short and take the number two spot.

The top three records in this Sunday's chart could all be products of the Popstars programme.

Transylvanian twins Monica and Gabriela were laughed off the programme when they auditioned for the girl group.

But a track written by their mother, Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum) released under the name of the Cheeky Girls, is number three in the charts and expected to take the number three spot."

OTV's song reminds me of something, I just can't quite pinpoint it.

it reminds me of a cross between the flying pickets' "only you" and go west's "king of wishful thinking".

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, "Sound Of The Underground" is ace, the first reality pop single I've actually bought I think. My normally reliable pop barometer (i.e. Isabel) seems to have been affected by the cold weather as she is more interested in David Sneddon's future career. Where oh where is Larry Parnes when you need him to give the lad a name makeover! (apologies to any Sneddons out there)

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and I've not heard the OTV tune all the way through, the intro sounded alright though.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, king of wishful of thinking! that's it!! thanks wellsy!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously? cool! i didn't think anyone else would hear that.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the OTV song is based on Jason Donovan's 'Until You Come Back To Me' - listen and agree!

the Girls Aloud appears to be based on a combination of Puretone's 'Addicted To Bass' and Las Ketchup's 'Aserje' - but the end result isnt as good as either really - and i find the title predictably contemptible, but perhaps that was their intention

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i am now thinking 'sk8ter boi' will be the first number one of 2003 - tho my only basis for that is that its number 1 in the radio airplay chart published by Heat every week...also perhaps the surge of negative comments about Avril recently will backfire and cause a sales boost

plus it will be a slow week as always with the first of the year

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Girls Aloud doing Stay Another Day on Sat. morning kids TV yesterday was unbearably beautiful. I love them! My favourite is still Cheryl, but I can see a day when Kim-ber-leh will run her close. Even the frankly ugly Nadine was radiant among the Christmas lights. And Nicola is so fucking punk.

SOTU is, as MC said, terrific. Hopefully No. 1 later today.

one hundred reasons to buy girls aloud

minna (minna), Sunday, 22 December 2002 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I like 'The King of Wishful Thinking'.

I don't know the other records to which you refer.

the pinefox, Sunday, 22 December 2002 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Nadine is easily the most beautiful Girl Aloud. Not quite as stunning as she was when Pop Rivals began but she's still ultrapretty. And the rumours of her mental breakdown just make her more endearing.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Sunday, 22 December 2002 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You're nuts. She rocks, but looks like a Bedlington terrier. With a muzzle on.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 22 December 2002 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

You sure you're not thinking of a certain ginger scouse girl? Cos Nadine is an irish superbabe to die for, even if she does have sticky orange skin. I thought it was a given that Nadine is the main focal point of the band and the rest were merely her little serflings. Anyone else think Nadine mings/stuns?

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Sunday, 22 December 2002 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Sk8er Boi won't make the ten, according to Pop Bitch.

THE CHEEKY GIRLS LIVE IN RYE! I GLIMPSED THEM LAST NIGHT!

also = NUMBER ONE. Has anyone heard sales figures?

Graham (graham), Sunday, 22 December 2002 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

2. It's also the best ever single from any Popstars band.

Not if you heard any Bandana

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 22 December 2002 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian - I know who's who! Nicola = just turned 17 redhead scouser. Nadine = pugfaced Irish lass who can sing better than the rest.

Cheryl = goddess
Kim-ber-leh = nearly goddess. (That Yorkshire accent!)
Sarah = the jury's out. She looked good in the Rivals progs, but I'm not sure about her image now. I reckon she'll leave first.

A civil servant is being prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act for a blog in which he allegedly details the kidnap and murder of Girls Aloud.

The case of Darryn Walker, 35, is being seen as one of the most significant on censorship since Lady Chatterley's Lover.

It is expected to be the first test of the law since pornographic material became widely available on the internet.

Walker is accused of posting the article on a fantasy porn website.

It allegedly described in detail the kidnap, mutilation, rape and murder of Girls Aloud members Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh.

Headlined 'Girls (Scream) Aloud' it is said to have run to 12 pages.

The website has a foreign host but prosecution is possible because the alleged author was identifiable as a British citizen living in the UK.

The Internet Watch Foundation, which polices obscene material, was alerted to the article last year.

A case was then brought by Scotland Yard's Obscene Publications Unit after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.

Most inquiries under obscenity laws have involved pornographic images in magazines or on DVDs.

In the coming weeks Walker, of South Shields, is due to appear at Newcastle crown court charged with publication of an obscene article.

He has already appeared before magistrates, where he was granted unconditional bail.

The 1959 Obscene Publications Act makes it illegal to publish material that tends to deprave and corrupt those reading or viewing it.

Sobering to be reminded that I started the first Girls Aloud thread on ILM. And now I'm the only one who doesn't like them. I'm not sure whether that is a sad or happy ending, nor for whom.

Still, the Dirty Pretty things are splitting up.

That's the band, not a description of Girls Aloud.

(sigh) yes, that's very true. If he'd stayed, "Beautiful Daughter" would have been a massive hit (even if it seems somewhat creepy thesedays), and we'd have been spared the Jeff Lynne years. And ELO, damnit.
