Sonic Youth and Aphex Twin for me. I can see how incredibly vital they were for their genres, how astoundingly inventive and original they were back in the day... but I just don't like them.

Callum (Callum), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Sun Ra. I like a lot of jazz players a lot better, although he has a few moments here and there.

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the Cap'n of Beef
Rolling Stones
to name a few

insectifly2, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

derrick may and juan atkins

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Parliament/Funkadelic/George Clinton - nope, don't even like "Flashlight."

paul cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Wesley Willis. The only paranoid homeless schizophrenic with some pitch issues to make more albums is Van Morrison.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Wesley Willis is way better.

And every ost in this thread is somewhat right on for me.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

lee perry...king tubby

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

bob dylan - every so often i'll get out my 3 cd collection or borrow one of the supposedly best releases from a friend. i'll play them yet again and still be completely unmoved by the lyrical adventures or the emotional truth behind them. still think he's kinda awfull, really.

phil turnbull (philT), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. They both seem like perfectly swell gents who've contributed great things to music and culture, but for the life of me.....I can't stand to listen to either of'em.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Dylan for me to. Except, he doesn't seem like a "swell gent" to me, he seems like a total asshole, but I totally respect all he's done for modern music...I just don't enjoy any of it.

And I've seen Wesley Willis' bare ass. He's made me give him a head-butt. I've made him a tuna fish sammich. He's kinda scary as shit in person.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

He's scary as shit in person because he's METALLY UNSTABLE, you silly people. As if Daniel Johnston for that matter. I don't understand how people can listen to these artists and not feel pangs of guilt for exploiting them.

Bob Dylan doesn't necessarily strike me as a "total asshole" (though he's a pompous fuck in Pennebaker's "Don' Look Back"), but no more so than a thousand other musical luminaries.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the entire genre of reggae. actually i'm not sure if i even appreciate it

brains (cerybut), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

old skool rap

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Kraftwerk, Neu!.. Krautrock in general.

Lou Reed's solo stuff (with exceptions of course, and I really love a smattering of VU tunes)

David Bowie

Brian Eno

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

John Coltrane, t'be honest

always've been more of a Miles-Ornette-DonCherry kinda guy',
and for a few past years have listened more to Alice than John

t\'\'t (t''t), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Kraftwerk. ABBA, too. De La Soul's Three Feet High & Rising. Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. Robert Johnson.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i really really LOVE and respect the REsidents but i NEVER LISTEN TO THEM

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Zappa and Henry Rollins.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah! I haven't actually heard Plastic People Of The Universe but Pulnoc would qualify. Pretty boring music but they went to jail for it and all. Bands that suck in the face of government oppression are fairly impressive. I don't think an American band could compete, aside from 2 Live Crew maybe.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beatles

rat, Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, pretty much every namedropped artist on the country or hip hop sides of things. There's just so much backcatalogue I can go through at one time and somehow hip-hop and country are always at the bottom of my priority list- mainly because I live in America and I wager I'll still be able to find those albums in a couple years whereas I've found that new wave/techno/synthpop oldies disappear fizzast.

Coltrane, too, but I respect Bird and Monk more than Miles or Coltrane to be honest, and I don't listen to any of them very much. MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS.

Oh, and rockwise - Pink Floyd for the most part - I like one or two tunes but all that other stuff is only entertaining if I'm quite drunk.

Tom Millar (Millar), Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

what t\'\'t said -- it's Ornette-Ayler-Sun Ra fer me

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Tad, dear, your rather read my thoughts than my mail, in part

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Pixies, P-funk.

original bgm, Thursday, 19 December 2002 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

And the p-funk thing is weird because I LOVE lots of Dr. Dre where its obvious he's borrowing techniques very liberally. (or just sampling them outright)

original bgm, Thursday, 19 December 2002 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

P-funk IS sorta weird for me too
i've really enjoyed some of Clinton's solo shit and certainly many songs by Parliament and Funkadelic -- didn't have any albums of theirs for a long time -- and when i later got me double an single compilations of all of them and also Bootsy's, most of the stuff on them didn't sound as resplendent as i was led to expect by those earlier-heard indivual tracks, let alone by the "general critical consensus"

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of classical and jazz, and some other stuff, but as a specific example, let's say Frank Sinatra. (Not that I don't ever enjoy listening to anything by him, but I'd really rather not, despite respecting him a great deal.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Led Zepplin, since although I like them overall, Robert Plant generally bugs me too much for me to want to listen to them. (But Led Zepplin without Roebrt Plant? I can't quite imagine it.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Kraftwerk.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Indian classical music, too. (Sorry to switch from artists to genres.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Beefheart, The Monkees, The Velvet Underground, Derrick May.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

never in a million years would have thought that tom wouldn't like the monkees...
i think there are a lot of types of music i respect but don't much enjoy listening to yet,but it's more that i haven't got around to making much of an effort with them...
reggae,a lot of jazz,pre-jeff mills detroit techno...i love some songs or whatever in each genre, but overall i don't quite "get" it

robin (robin), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cure (I am going to burn in hell...)

mal2478 (mal2478), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I do like them but not much. I hadnt really thought about whether I did or not until today actually.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Most drum 'n bass, Merzbow, trance, gabber, Avril Lavigne, Akufen, Momus, Arto Lindsay, Farben, DJ Sammy, Can

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Stockhausen & John Cage

Aaron W, Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't ever imagine putting on a Diamanda Galas record, but the idea of her music seems perfectly valid.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I second Farben - I could see it was clearly very good indeed at what it was, but what it was bored me shitless.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

James Ball, have you ever seen Diamanda Galas perform? It makes a lot more "sense" live.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe one day I'll give her a go. But I still reckon I'd 'respect' her music rather than 'enjoy' it.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 19 December 2002 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know whether you'd like it or not, but there's a strong theatrical element to her performances. I have generally not found myself wanting to listen to the recordings (though I've only had a couple).

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 19 December 2002 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Fugazi. In fact, anything Saint-Ian-related.

rh, Friday, 20 December 2002 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

How could anyone not enjoy listening to the Monkees?

For me, uh, the Minutemen.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 December 2002 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I admire Tom E for admiring, but not liking, the Monkees.

the pinefox, Friday, 20 December 2002 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Frank Zappa by far.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Saturday, 21 December 2002 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Atomsmasher

As for Diamanda: "The Singer" and "The Sporting Life" are good to listen to.

Dave Fischer, Saturday, 21 December 2002 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, there are several Zappa tunes I love (my guitar wants to kill your mama) but he is too Phish, or they are too Zappa, or something. Also Merzbow and all of reggae.

webcrack (music=crack), Saturday, 21 December 2002 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Matthews Band is pretty talented and they put on a good show, but their not my style.

Nate (Nate), Saturday, 21 December 2002 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Joni Mitchell

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 21 December 2002 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I am reminded of Zappa by FishBONE, but not Phish!!!

Dave Fischer, Saturday, 21 December 2002 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The Band, Van Morrison ("Brown Eyed Girl" aside), Bob Marley (I REALLY tried), Jimi Hendrix (I like him, but the prospect of sitting through all of "Voodoo Chile" one more time is petrifying), Otis Redding (I feel sort of rotten admitting this, but it's true), Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, and a lot of jazz. I would have said the Pixies up until recently, but I've just fallen hard for Surfer Rosa.

I'm with Tom: I quite like the idea of the Monkees but their actual records aren't all that, unfortunately. The TV show was pretty cool, but it's really just Help! with lamer jokes, isn't it?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 21 December 2002 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Silver Apples. I. Don't Get. It. Sounds like 'poetry' to me
