I would really love to get my hands on this.

is this supposed rougher Albini mix a confirmed existing reality, or just a popular rumor? i've never really gotten a clarification.

Didn't Scott Litt only touch two tracks anyway? I think it was Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies, but I'm not 100% about the later. I think there was a number of CDs destroyed with a Scott Litt remix of Pennyroyal Tea, and there are promos of that knocking about.

The teenager in me still finds Cobains wish to remix and remaster Nevermind with a really crappy mixing desk and none of Andy Wallace's extra post-production sheen quite interseting, even though the resulting record wouldn't be a patch on the proper record.

Yep, only Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies were touched. The new version of Pennyroyal Tea is on the Best-Of

According to Novoselic, the original mix on "Heart-Shaped Box" was marred, even scarred, by an effects-laden solo which carved through the song, and set his flesh crawling whenever he thought of it. "The band would say something, how great the album was, and it was like-'Yeah. Shame about that solo, though."'

I want to hear this version!

Finally, Cobain and Grohl agreed it could go, and this is where things go awry. It's now common knowledge that the band and Albini had a contractual agreement which stipulated no work could be done on the album once Albini declared it finished. It's less widely known, apparently, that Albini happily waived that stipulation the moment Cobain asked him about it.

There was no dispute, no problem, and all down the line, no bad feelings. Cobain added a few backing vocals to one song, Novoselic wiped the solo on another, and everyone was happy. It was as simple as that.

Intriguing

Mojo had an excellent article on this topic last year.

one year passes...
I just went to download that mojo file and received the following message - Siamo spiacenti, la pagina richiesta non puo' essere trovata!

which I guess means that it isn't there. Does anyone have another link to it?

Check the "walmart" version ("waif me" on the back) and you will have the remix version, there.

Albini also claimed the mastering was intrusive. So we'll probably have to wait for a legitimate release to hear the real thing.

hmmm try the second (1.8mb) link rather than the first (5.5mb) link. I got that to work.

Hey Italy,

No problem from the bad english. Is so many better than the bad Italian!

I don't know the thing you down-load. Is maybe not real copy. Anyway, nobody here is to give any the shit about it. Nobody cares here. Is to be so private obsession for fan only, and only!

Okay? Beautiful! Ciao Italy!

Remember, nobody here gives the shit.

and so albini's much-celebrated social ineptitude rears its abrasive head.

Ah Steve. It's hard not to get a chuckle from that.

eight months pass...
the albini mix seems to be cropping up on slsk these days. can anyone confirm/deny that these are the 'real deal'?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

I bought a tape of In utero demos years and years ago in the Barras in Glasgow. I assumed they were the 'albini demos'.
They were certainly rough. and very enjoyable.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

i'm checking some out right now. they're deffo a different mix. very ape & serve the servants sound fantastic.
though i'm sure i heard reports that the albini mixes were "unlistenable". these are nothing of the sort. but if they ain't albini mixes... what are they?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...

Nobody here is to give any the shit about it. Nobody cares here.

President Busch (dr g), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

and besides, i think it's quite easy to remaster the album a whole lot rougher yourself, put it up on slsk, and presto! i don't care!

marc(drums) (marcdrums), Monday, 5 September 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

+ add your own awful solo to heartshaped box. it's bound to carve through the song, and live up to the myth. i wouldn't care, though.

marc(drums) (marcdrums), Monday, 5 September 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Isn't the original Heart Shaped Box solo on the recent box-set?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

A few years ago I downloaded something like "In Utero - First Week Mix" from Sharing The Groove. That's the closest I've seen to something like this.

One of the more popular MP3 blogs had a couple tracks from this about a year ago. Can't remember which ones. I know I downloaded the stuff, but don't know where it is.
