Who reigned supreme?
King Diamond,Mercyful Fate, Accept,Helloween, Emperor,Bathory etc Or Iron Maiden, Saxon,Priest, Samson,Angelwitch etc?
Who ruled Metal?

No, let me ask *you* a question. How did the Euro stuff *sound* different than the Brit stuff? To me they mostly both sound like souped-up opera hogwash. Which I guess is what you *like*, seeing how you didn't list Motorhead about the Limeys. (And though, okay, Accept did have their AC/DC-gone-homoerotic moments, as anybody would admit.)

Who ruled metal? Um, Rose Fucking Tattoo, probably. Who were Australian. (And ugly. And bald. And short.) But I digress.

oh, please....it was completely the Brits.

Well i dont really consider Motorhead as NWOBHM. But i guess the thread doesnt have to stick to NWOBHM or even Brit Vs Europe. Britain vs Rest OF The WOrld if you like.
Motorhead cant really be categorized. They just ROCK!
I just wonder what is more influential. Certainly Rose Tatoo were an influence on Guns N Roses.

Count Violence, Thursday, 19 December 2002 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but even if you discount Motorhead (who, as you rightly assert, cannot be boxed-in), you've got to admit that Iron Maiden (the preeminent NWOBHM band) are a damn sight better/more influential than, say, Mercyful Fate and Accept

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 December 2002 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, i know Carcass,Metallica et al were all influenced by NWOBHM. But who was the bigger influence on the current metal scene? Some nu-metal bands go on about Iron Maiden but im sure Venom were far more influential to a huge range of bands. same goes for Celtic Frost and Bathory.Particularly those european bands.
Death, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death i feel maybe influenced the American bands.
I have no idea who the Brit bands claim as an influence.
I remember when 'Pyromania' was held up as being Prime UK Metal. How times(and bands) change!
Hell even Voivod probably influenced many of those 'industrial metal' bands.
Jason Newsted is apparently in Voivod now.

"Some nu-metal bands go on about Iron Maiden but im sure Venom were far more influential"

Venom were also British (from Newcastle upon Tyne).

I never understood why people preferred Paul Diano era Maiden to Bruce. I certainly dont see why 'Killers' is seen as a lost classic.
Its nothing compared to the pop metal genius of 'Number Of The Beast'.

I never felt Dickinson was necessarily "better," but rather simply "different." Paul Di'anno had a totally different style (some have made the argument that he might've been the bridge that united the Punk and Metal communities had he stayed in the fold....only that feat was handily accomplished by Motorhead).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 December 2002 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

In Britain there was always a huge chasm between metal and punk. Perhaps it was different in America,(Black Flag seemed to bridge the gap nicely there)
2 sets(where i stayed at least) were always fighting. But were themselves targets of abuse by townies.
Nothings changed on the latter bit. If anything its worse. I feel sorry for my nephews & nieces growing up just now. They cant even go to mcdonalds without getting abuse. And they even get it from those in 'nu-metal' tops, just for wearing QOTSA or Sabbath tshirts.

SAXON are the best metal band around coz they wore metal well aluminium jumpsuits and ghostbuster type backpacks

Venom has to be the most influential on Metal. hardcore punk bands too.

Unfortunately, it is not as cut and dry as choosing Euro metal over NWOBHM. There are bands on both sides that I think really suck such as Saxon or Accept and Bathory. On the other hand, I grew up listening to Iron Maiden voraciously (Paul and Bruce I liked both) Judas Priest (one of the more entertaining bands in their day) and Mercyful Fate and King Diamond-I also listened to Celtic Frost (before they went glam)...just my two cents.

Not Maiden! Now that thrash sounds a good deal less heavy than it once did, I think the sound has lost a little something. Maiden still sounds like gravy, baby.

SAXON WWWWWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Frog Notreally, Friday, 20 December 2002 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The chasm in the US between hardcore and metal wasn't much of a chasm....perhaps a small ditch. Bands like Agnostic Front and the Cro Mags regularly played with Whiplash, Anthrax, Celtic Frost (when they'd tour the states), so forth.

As for the original question, I like Mercyful Fate more than Maiden, Priest or Venom. But too many German bands sound like Helloween. So, umm, England. Sure.

Look, folks, I think Accept's "Balls To The Wall" wins this fight by itself. Man, I am so glad that I'm typing this instead of saing it to people face to face, because you guys can't see me giggling after every 3 words of that last sentence.

Avril wouldn't know the Cro-Mags from the Partridge Family.

two years pass...
Mercyful Fate, Venom, and Slayer kick any of the aforementioned bands asses except for Celtic Frost. Bathory was pretty good, too. Fuck Iron Maiden and whoever the fuck else- Accept- who gives a flyin fuck about Accept? Mercyful Fate, Venom and Slayer started it all hands down. Especially the first 2 I've mentioned.
