Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

what's w/ the scattergun let's see what hits gareth -style, ronan?

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I just had been meaning to post these threads for ages!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

do you like my scattergun approach to answering them?

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't heard this, btw.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes scattergun is all good cos people think it's an important thread and not one of mine, (violin outro)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Why would anyone want to hit gareth? ;-)

I liked this a lot when I heard an extract during a London visit. Never seen it for sale in Belgium, sadly.

Jeff W, Friday, 20 December 2002 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was very good but actually not as good as it could have been - there's a slight sag in the middle if I recall.

Maybe I'm still a tiny bit disappointed with Stanton Warriors - their early stuff was fab ("Determined", "Too True", the first Basement Jaxx remix, the Jocelyn Brown remix, the original Busta Rhymes bootleg), culminating in the excellent remix of Fatboy Slim's "Demons" and Artful Dodger's "Please Don't Turn Me On".... But I find them simply not as interesting in their straight breakbeat incarnation. It's very hard to tell what distinguishes them from the Plump DJs et al, and while that doesn't make them bad (Plump DJs can be great), it is a slight tapering off.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they've rested on their laurels a bit, their dj sets have sucked greatly to the point where you wish they were MORE like Plump DJs who really do give it everything despite their work lacking the diversity of the Stanton Sessions (is this what you're getting at Tim?)

But who knows, if they make an album next year it could be really good, I really like the track towards the end of theirs featuring some vocalist called Da Empress, thought that one was absolutely beautiful.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Well yeah that tracks was one of the throwbacks to their earlier sound (I agree it is a peak). Ronan it's really astonishing that you haven't been converted to 2-step, all things considered.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure I'd like it really, I mean I do always like the garagey parts of breaks and there was that DJ Luck and MC Neat track, I just never heard enough really. If you could manage a tape that would be cool, but I understand there's a big backlog.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I liked it but I did notice that sag in the middle too. Also, too many beat-less step-up segues occasionally kill the momentum. I though the Stanton remix of "Has It Come To This" was the greatest thing ever but then they drag that acapella + beat skeleton part way too long.

DarrensCoq (DarrenK), Saturday, 20 December 2003 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything I read about them now (including interviews) gives the impression that they have always been a straight forward breaks act :(

At least the Wideboys had the decency to pretty much fade away without breaking my heart first.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 20 December 2003 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't The Stanton Session, like, the very first time ANYBODY had EVER anything from Mike "The Streets" Skinner?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 20 December 2003 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

no.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 December 2003 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Wasn't The Stanton Session, like, the very first time ANYBODY had EVER anything from Mike "The Streets" Skinner?"

(long answer): I think it came out at about the same time as the single for "Has It Come To This", which had been floating around as a dubplate on pirate radio for quite a while before that, which is how the Stanton Warriors heard it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 20 December 2003 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I prefer the version on Stanton Sessions, in whatever sense it is a version.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 20 December 2003 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What is a "dubplate"?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 20 December 2003 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

stantons are desperately guilty of just making "breaks versions" of house songs which have been out for like two months. it all just screams a dead scene really.

mind you that Gyromancer breaks track that's on Stanton Sessions is absolutely fucking amazing, possibly the best nu-breaks thing there is, really deep and rushy without being boring bushwacka prog.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 20 December 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Layo & Bushwacka and The Stanton Warriors will always be linked in my mind as the two formerly great acts that fell off at *exactly* the same time. Ronan did you ever end up hearing "Deep South"?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 21 December 2003 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
I've just been put on to the Stanton Sessions after hearing the first half in a wicked lil cafe that always plays good music and in the process being floored by the Has It Come To This acapella...

... so if the prognosis on this CD as a member of the breaksy genre (about which I know little) is 'pretty good but not stunning,' what's a cd that might be labelled 'stunning?'

(hmm, wordily put, but youse knowses what I meanses)

damian_nz (damian_nz), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually it was the track after the acapella that floored me, but anyway.

damian_nz (damian_nz), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the entire breaks genre is good but not stunning, personally.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha Ronan you stole my line!

(but yes Ronan is right)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It's great E music. I think because of the slightly proggy edge.

In fact though I think the general trend at the moment of prog revival is really reminding people (like me) just what good drug music it is, though it's not just drug music either. I think generally the weird depth of prog house etc is being rediscovered, the last 2 tracks on Smallville for instance, particularly the second last one, there's a really anthemic and uplifting feel to this sort of prog, prog dance at its mysterious best.

I think breaks is full of boring proggy stuff but tracks like Gyromancer by PMT on the Stanton Sessions were really perfect, a good solid breakbeat managed to drive the tracks more and stop them being so boring, aswell as creating a good template for the actual synths etc, instead of large expansive drones you get this cut up feel to tracks.

I digress from the thread a bit but in hindsight I think my brief period of really loving breaks was discovering the proggy side of dance music properly again, it definitely has something to it.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 12 January 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the stanton sessions is fab mix disc. one of the few i feel was worth the cash. they have become a bit shit though.

how bad is the adam freeland band project though. bejesus. when i heard that i realised my love of most things breaks was dying.

freeland, plumps, layo and bushwacka (though not really breaks) all put out disappointing records in last year or so.

gallantseagull, Tuesday, 13 January 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Still think Layo & Bushwacka's Low Life is the best thing this scene has produced.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

one breaks CD that up to the standard of the Stanton Sessions is the second Ils LP. the rest of the genre tends to be lifeless proggy K shite...

incidentally there would have been a Stanton's artist LP much sooner had some crackhead not stolen their Mac.

martin (martin), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
I've heard about a couple new Stanton Warriors tracks on 679. "Adventures in Success" and another 12". Breaks back from the brink? or not. probably not. But "Adventures.." sounds fun on the 679 site.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to hear them do something good but amn't holding my breath.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

'Stanton Sessions' is sooo classic. That Busta Rhymes thing is so awesome.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it's ace. i must dig it out, it's been months. I still maintain as I've no doubt said upthread that that "Gyromancer" track is an absolute classic. So so rushy and great. I've had some mad parties with this record too, though I say that about everything.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i sold this back a while ago

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, "Adventures" and "Slanty" are both on the 679recordings.com site. "Slanty" is RAD!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

You can actually dance to it, what a novel idea!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

bump for Tim Finney, is "Slanty" hopelessly regressive or THE BEST TRACK IN FOREVER?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I will listen when I am at a non-uni computer. Please don't get my hopes up too much Spencer or I will cry when I'm disappointed.

PS. I lost my mp3 of "Determined" some time ago and haf never been able to find it again :-(

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The rhythm is bump-n'-flex-ish.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a good sign!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Check your email...

Revive! I LOVE "Slanty"!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer i couldn't get the tracks for some reason *but* i listened in store and "Slanty" sounded really good. I think it was "Slanty". I can't remember. There was one with Cecile that by definitition was really really good, but the groove wasn't quite as topnotch as the other one which was more bump'n'flexish.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
haha so has anyone heard Stanton Sessions Vol 2? No idea what it sounds like, but it's got Metro Area, Trentemoller, M.I.A., Twista, LCD Soundsystem, Coburn & Big Daddy Kane! Um, wtf?

nb: I haven't heard anything they've done since Stanton Sessions Vol 1.
