Al Stewart and Momus

Is it just me or is there some odd conneciton between early Momus and Al Stewart? Sort of like Momus is a "bizzaro world" Al Stewart, or maybe AL Stewarts' Doppleganger? Not that I am comparing the quality of their work, more the tone of their voices.

P.S. THis fool got an Al Stewart Tatoo! http://www.rmns.co.uk/al1.htm

I had always thought there was an odd connection between early Momus and Dave Stewart.

That "fool" is Momus, you fool! That's his fuzzy arm, and that's the tat he got at the ILM-NY meet-up! That's the "dark secret" ha-ha-zzzz that they've been so ineptly trying to "cover up" (= hype)!

Early Momus was certainly more acoustic than later Momus. That's the only explanation I can give for this bizarre comparison. There are more credible people to mention from that era; The Poison Boyfriend has IIRC been compared to Nick Drake more than once, not least by Momus himself (not wholly positively).

Hee hee! ONce my freind and I performed an experiment at work where we played "Year of the CAt" on repeat for 3 hours. It was interesting. YOu start to hallucinate and see space weasles.

No, Nick doesn't sound like Al Stewart...but Neil Tennant does!

Al Stewart + Neil Tennant - Donovan X Nick Drake = Momus (but only his voice)

X. Y. Zedd, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, but is that:

(Al Stewart + Neil Tennant - Donovan) x Nick Drake = Momus (but only his voice)

or

Al Stewart + (Neil Tennant - Donovan) x Nick Drake = Momus (but only his voice)

or

Al Stewart + Neil Tennant - (Donovan x Nick Drake) = Momus (but only his voice)?

mark s, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Taking the first of these (the simplest) to be true, therefore:

((Al Stewart + Neil Tennant - Donovan) x Nick Drake)รท(but only his voice) = Momus

It will take a better person than me to work out the maths required to simplify the LHS of this equation to take us nearer to the scientifical TRUTH ABOUT MOMUS.

Here si an equation you may not have bargined for.

Momus-(xPet SHop Boys * y-Pointer Sisters)= Woody Guthrie+Wendy Carlos

where x = number of sex partners and y = ability to test hammocks as measured in giggles

I once asked Al Stewart about this, but he professed total ignorance of who Momus might be.

Jens (brighter), Monday, 14 April 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway, recent episodes of that Whistle Test compilation thing have proved that is Pete Shelley who = Al Stewart.

The correct answer is surely Alasdair Maclean from the Clientele.

Funnily you should say that: as I posted elsewhere, a friend of mine once remarked when listening to Poison Boyfriend, 'Is that fucking Al Stewart or something? I happened to hear Year of the Cat around the same time, noticied some similarities in the voice and when Al Stewart happened to come to UEA a couple of months later, I asked him about Momus, but he'd never heard of him.

I think they're both kinda fey softly spoken Scotsmen, no?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Saturday, 7 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Tennant, Stewart and Maclean, and to a lesser extent Momus, all seem similar in that they have a rather detached feel to their voices. In that they're observing rather than participating, but are emotionally involved never the less.

The Scottish angle is interesting, as you could probably put lump Stuart Murdoch in with them too. Though I think it's probably no more than coincidence. You certainly couldn't lump Billy McKenzie,Alex Harvey or that guy from Franz Ferdinand in with them.

Title track from the most recent Momus album: inspired by this thread?
