Music at Sporting Events: What Would _YOU_ Choose to Play?

Imagine that you're George Steinbrenner (or whoever owns Manchester United), you've got your own sports team and you're sick to death of "We Are the Champions" or "Rock and Roll Part 2" or whatever crap music they play over the PA system in yer lovely little stadium. What music would you have blasting between innings, or after Shaq nails three points, or the team scores a goal?

Hopefully, there's something appropriate about the song and sports in general, but that isn't necessary.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Considering how he-man macho some sports fans are (esp. hockey fans), I think that playing Turbonegro on the PA would be really funny.

Or, since hockey games (and the fans during hockey games) are so damn violent, maybe some Anal Cunt. Or scenes from the G.G. Allin movie, Hated in the Nation on the DiamondVision.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bizarre -- Tadeusz is *clearly* Kris and Otis fused into one body. Sports and Turbonegro, that clinches it.

Uh...something loud with a lot of bass. It would disorient the players if handled right.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also Sprach Zarathustra (the theme from 2001, A Space Odyssey). I'm A Loser, by Beck. Smalltown Boy, by Bronski Beat. Tainted Love; anything that sounds gay. Though mind you, they actually use 'Two Tribes Go to War.' Girls Just Want to Have Fun (only for the Rugby World Cup, obviously.) And finally, any music from the psychedelic era that's about hippy peacefulness (Give Peace a Chance, Imagine, Tomorrow Never Knows, for inst.)

I would like to see more televised chess games, with the pre- requisite 'Song 2' blaring every couple of minutes.

Here'a a weird one, somehow related:

The French version of "Hockey Night in Canada", the hockey tv show, most likely has a cool guy doing the sound editing, as from nowhere, the songs "Disintegration"/"Fascination Street" by the Cure and "Never Let Me Down Again" by DM can be heard as background music.

As for the question itself, I dont know why but I think "Juicy Juicy Juice" by the Trux would just drive the crowd crazy. Or maybe not.

Simon, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the fatboy slim mix of underworld's 'king of snake'. dilated people's 'work the angles'. leftfield's 'afrika shox'. wu's 'for heaven's sake' and 'wu-tang clan ain't nothing to fuck with'. anything by run dmc, the juice crew or public enemy. all of these are sure crowd-pleasers and obviously fantastic.

ethan, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Trout Mask Replica, of course.

Melissa W, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would play no music. Who says everything has to have music?

Josh, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Music at sporting events is already great, I don't see how you improve upon it. The Tom Lund Band's post-Turbonegro remake of "I Got Erection", "Europas Juvel", which they wrote to be the official anthem of the Norwegian national football team, may be the best sports- inspired song ever recorded.

Otis Wheeler, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Take the skinheads bowling"

Stevie Nixed, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In the UK loads of football teams record terrible club songs, celebrating their achievements and/or possible future victories - do sports teams in the US do the same thing?

Andrew L, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My beloved Goodison Park (not so beloved that I've actually been near the place in the last 13 years, you understand) used to resound to the "Theme From Z-Cars" on match-days - a jazzed-up version of an old Liverpool folksong called "Johnny Todd", which has been covered by Bob Dylan. "Z-Cars" was a BBC police drama set in an unspecified area of North-West England (most guessed it was supposed to be the new-town outskirts of Liverpool - Kirkby, Skelmersdale, etc), and ran from '62 to '78, giving a start to the likes of Leonard Rossiter, Brian Blessed, Joss Ackland.

During the mid-90s madness that was the Mike Walker period, "Z-Cars" was ditched, first for some chart hit called "Are (U/You) Ready For (D/Th)is?" (or something), then for "Fanfare For The Common Man". Joe Royle brought it back.

As for alternatives... erm, Amon Tobin's "Golfer vrs Boxer" springs to mind as being ideal for those events where golfers compete against boxers. "Superstars" with Ron Pickering, f'instance.

Michael Jones, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not a football fan, so I'd probaly play them whitehouse. At earthquake volume. heh heh heh.

Stevo, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

do sports teams in the US do the same thing?

"Rappin' Rodney"- / "Rappin' Duke"- / "Rappin' Ronnie Reagan"-esque novelty hip-hop track, "The Super Bowl Shuffle" (thanks, Google) recorded by American football team the Chicago Bears in 1985 is sort of the protoypical one, and still the only one of note I can recall, but it isn't nearly the practice that it is in the UK.

scott p., Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The practice seems top be dying off in the UK, at least at club level. Were there Liverpool or Arsenal songs recorded for this season's FA Cup? If there were they passed me by.

Nick, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, I can't believe you forgot John 'Rhino Edwards' - of S!t!a!tu!s! Q!U!O! fame! - doing a song for Brentford in their LDV final against Port Vale.

stevie t, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One day, I WILL own the Yankees, if just to make Derek Jeter my love slave. When I do that, Yankee Stadium will play nothing but "Afternoon Delight" because I hate Yankees fans.

Ally, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Derek Jeter? Wouldn't you fear Mariah cooties?

Nicole, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pff, like they haven't been rubbed off on someone else by now.

Ally, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kinky Friedman.

Geoff, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Derek Jeter indeed. Like you dont crave Paul Oneil's hot tempered ass. Or Louis Sojo's beautiful double chin. I would play The Free Design. Heh hee. No on e would know what to do.

Mike Hanley, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't stand M-People's "Moving On Up", but it always brings back fond memories of when it was played when my beloved Crystal Palace FC won the First Division play-off final in May 1997.

And my answer to this question: The Auteurs, "Kenneth Anger's Bad Dream" (the absolute and definitive cultural opposite of David Beckham).

Robin Carmody, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's Derek Jeter or death for me. I refuse to sleep with anyone besides Derek Jeter ever again. And don't get me started on that Andy Pettitte asshole.

Ally, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gotta come clean.. once assisted in recording a KISS pastische for the TOON ..chorus went 'God gave Andy Cole to ya'

nufc = beck's 'loser', joy division's 'atrocity exhibition'

geordie racer, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"the absolute and definitive cultural opposite of David Beckham": is that good or bad?

mark s, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Andy Pettie may have the roman nose many women find unappealing, but he is able to focus and has been known to spontaneaously scream "ICE CREAM MAKES IT HAPPY!" while mowing his lawn.

Mike Hanley, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's a wankerface. It has nothing to do with his nose. he's just scary looking, no matter what flavor ice cream he likes.

Ally, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally...when did yo u loose the love girl? Open your heart to that brave, noble pitcher. Let his radience percolate through your lymph nodes. After all, with out make up Derek Jeter looks like Barney Rubdle after a midnight cocaine enema.

Mike Hanley, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jane Wiedlin, 'Rush Hour'.

"Johnny Todd" ("Johnny Todd"?!!? Oh, really...), Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Listen, here's a deal, Mike: YOU go make out with Andy Pettitte. I'll go bag Jeter. Are we sorted?

Ally, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark: not good or bad; just the utter contrast amuses me.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Two words: Air Supply !!!!!!!!

Luptune Pitman, Friday, 1 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I would like to "bag"Petitte. Mmmmmmm.

Mike Hanley, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Greig. And if I were a coach, I would insist on riding a horse about the sidelines.

JM, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Back in high school, I was slightly shocked to hear "Disco 2000" in some silly mega-mix played at a pep-rally. It was just there, in the midst of "Pump up the Jam" and that song from the Mortal Kombat soundtrack. Yikes. Dunno where that came from... Pulp were basically unheard of, aside from a few hipster kids, in Iowa.

Bobby D. Gray, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
I'd personally play lots of Englebert Humberdink and Tom Jones. Nothing like hearing, "After The Loving", or "What's New Pussycat" after a monster slam dunk!

joey the dj, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ween's "Waving My Dick in the Wind"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i once snuck into the booth at a hockey game at my high school and played some choice selectiond by Aphex Twin during the breaks before I was "escorted" out. The music went well with the game and venue, i think.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
"Kill the Sax Player" by Girls Against Boys
