with Brandan Kearney, classic.
without Brandan Kearney, dud.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 22 December 2002 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

completely insane -- so classic.

a friend of mine has most of their vinyl releases -- including the one that comes packaged in a pizza box with gig flyers (for completely different bands i should add) broken toys and miscellaneous junk. there's another one in a fake parchment sleeve that has the most hilarious liner notes i've ever read.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Sunday, 22 December 2002 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

awe-inspiringly classic. i have some 7" and "toodoos" on vinyl, a bunch of other stuff as mp3s and it's all pretty goddamn amazing. "toodoos" is still my favorite overall.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 23 December 2002 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Totally batty. I've had the pleasure of seeing them live a couple of times. I don't actually listen to their records very often, but I'm delighted to have them on the shelf. Plus at some show a year or two ago I heard this horrible scraping noise come over the PA and thought "oh, hey, it's 'Fiddle With the Heart Stuck In It.'"

Brandan Kearney should play more music.

Douglas, Monday, 23 December 2002 06:50 (twenty-three years ago)

brandan kearney should play more music. he's an underrated musician and songwriter.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 23 December 2002 07:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Really loved Brandan's work on the new Faxed Head CD "Chiropractic"!

Ted Apperson, Tuesday, 24 December 2002 07:17 (twenty-three years ago)

fantastic! i like the way they go out of their way to get REALLY BAD vinyl pressings to add to the schtick "scrambled egg taken for an wife" is just beautiful to my ears it IS! wich lp is "outhouse of the pryee" on? i never managed to track that one down

bob snoom, Sunday, 29 December 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
Caroliner Rainbow Of Greased Nostrils Stuffed With Stale Marshmellow Pig Rumps will be playing a show in Detroit next month, with support from local heroes Wolf Eyes.

For me, Caroliner records function mainly as elaborately packaged dust traps, but descriptions of their live shows intrigue me. After all, I like to watch fauvist frontier fever visions beating on black lit buckets and banjos as much as the next guy.

If you've encountered the legendary Caroliner in the wild, please share your stories here. Was it fun, or was it just a big headache? Did you relish the experience, or did you wish you'd just stayed home and watched "Little House on the Prarie" reruns?

EC, Friday, 14 March 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i've witnessed a sort of caroliner offshoot... hansgrusel's krankenkabinet.... (music mostly prepared by grux)... was excellent.

http://www.pataphysics-lab.com/cgi-bin/cart.cgi?item_id=380&action=showitem

caronliner rainbow is on tour...

http://www.freedom-from.com/caroliner

i appreciate their presentation a little more than the music itself.

msp, Friday, 14 March 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Caroliner once. It was a wonderful spectacle to behold.

hstencil, Friday, 14 March 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooo, every time I read about this scene I edge away uncomfortably, afraid I could be missing something amazing that I'd totally love, but that I could never find the energy (or time, or money) to explore.

Hopefully, it's all crap!! *Dons blinders, returns to hot indie chick thread*

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

this is a totaly newbie question (i only have 1 caroliner album) but can anyone explain the differences (if any) between caroliner and caroliner rainbow? is there a difference in name only??

marcg (marcg), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

differences are in name only, and compulsively so, so I've heard -

it takes them 5 hours to set up before each gig

I would NOT miss the Caroliner gig with Wolf Eyes - i'm gonna be in Chicago, and staying an extra day just to be there - two great live bands on the same bill

I have a video of them - it's like Meet The Feebles on acid

and all of their records are great - pretty much indistinguishable from each other, but great!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

there is no such thing as caroliner rainbow (according to bananafish #3)... it's either caroliner (referring to the singing bull of the late 1890s... or head thereof) or caroliner rainbow +add your own random wordplay choice of phrasing... both the same band, just different ways of referring to them.

i'd say live pretty much as classic as they come, on record... hmmm, ehhhh...

brandan kearney was just a sideman in the band, people like jack cole seem to stress his importance (to quote brandan himself here):

MP: You've explained that Caroliner was really Grux's baby, as far as the songwriting and image and whatnot. What role did you play in the band? How do the non-Kearney records compare to the Kearney-era records?

BK:I feel bad even discussing this, really. The band was supposed to exist without personalities, and I still respect that to an extent, even though it was always kind of an open secret. As far as comparisons, I think people have given me way too much credit, because if you look at the first record, or "Rings on the Awkward Shadow," they're great, and I had absolutely nothing to do with them. I think if I'd never joined they still would have made good records...maybe even better ones. But my specific role had mainly to do with recording and arranging things...production, I guess you'd call it. I didn't write the songs, and I often played within the confines of what Grux wanted to hear...on record, at least. Getting away from the band itself, I'd say that of the things I've done, the Caroliner records are probably what I'm happiest with, artistically. But was the band qualitatively better with me than without me? I don't think you could necessarily say that.

i'd say dame darcy's days with caroliner are almost as important as brandan's.

live, the first experiences i had (chameleon and purple onion, summer 94) were visually the sheer flourescence drawn forth from black light projection; musically, the 100 year old folk songs as covered by future-pioneer renegades speaking in antiquated diction... the noise was fun squallor and scrape, a very mysterious band ranging and connecting out from Grux, Brandan, Dame Darcy, Bill Bowman, Gregg Turkington, Trey Spruance... a very deep roster of eccentricity.

The parallel universe is still very active... see msp's mention of Hans GruXel's Krankenkabinett, also the one-off CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR GRAY DAVIS which opened for Ex-Girl (Japan) and TFUL282 a couple summers ago at the GAMH... which was like Hans Grusel times 20.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 15 March 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

bananafish #3 - that's the one that came with the perpetual motor skills 7"?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 15 March 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

People like Jack Cole? Who are these people? When can I meet them?

As for the Kearney interview, Kearney is very modest, undercutting himself.

Certainly all the players were all important at one point or another -- I just like the one's Kearney was involved with more, a whiff of structure and additive X. Many of Grux's post-Caroliner projects just don't strike the proverbial chord, though I suppose it's not post-Caroliner anymore what with the reformation.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 15 March 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

fans: I'VE got a good, difficult question: what's your FAVORITE Caroliner record? I'd have to say for me it's between the Bug / Clocks 12", the Bank Notes LP and the Our American Heritage LP. Been looking forever for the rear end hernia puppet show lp - anyone have it?

also - who was in Angst Haste Pfeffer Nase?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

my favorite is _toodoos_ because it's the first one i heard. i think "rear end hernia puppet show" has been floating around on soulseek, but i haven't seen a caroliner album in the flesh in _years_ now.

angst hase pfeffer nase... that's one guy, i think. i remember reading an interview with him in bananafish a while back but i don't remember any of the actual content. great album on menlo park, a couple of EPs...

your null fame (yournullfame), Sunday, 16 March 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i know, they're hard to come by these days. Soulseek is good for some things, but i'll probably have to track down Rear End Hernia on vinyl one day. i think i'll post it on the "record want list" thread...

i was confusing angst hase pfeffer nase with the Commode Minstrels or whetever they're called - I don't think AHPN is a Caroliner-affiliated project - in fact if i remember right, it may be the Deerhoof guy...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 16 March 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
can someone tell me if i should see caroliner tonight?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, is that tonight? Fireside right? I saw 'em once about eight years ago, and my memory is foggy, but I recall it being pretty good. Costumes and shit.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. yes you really want to see them. the live show is the point. sometimes the music is better than other other nights, but once you actually see them there on the stage you will understand everything. ps where are they playing.

helpsuit, Friday, 18 April 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

AMATEURIST GO SEE THEM! I saw them last week in NYC, it was awesome!

hstencil, Friday, 18 April 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I will see them HStencil if you STOP HOPPING UP AND DOWN.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't stop HOPPING UP AND DOWN cuz "Telegram Sam" is PLAYING!

hstencil, Friday, 18 April 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a good reason to hop.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

show at Fireside - inzane (tho Wolf Guys stole the show, as always) - Chicago kicks NYCs ass by the way

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

why thank you roger. you were there last night then? i couldn't make it, but i'm rather glad as the spectacle of no doctors live at fucking nevin's is something i cannot miss.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

No Doctors suck but go anyway.

hstencil, Friday, 18 April 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

HStencil I kiss you. It'd still be funny to see them at Nevin's. Actually it's probably only funny in theory. Maybe I'll show up late.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

naw you should go and heckle them.

hstencil, Friday, 18 April 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm kind of scared of the lead singer even though I know he's just a RTVF trustfund idiot.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

So I'm not the only one who can't stand all this crap Freedom From nonsense?

Roger did you hit the record stores?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

So I'm not the only one who can't stand all this crap Freedom From nonsense?

Emphatically no.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd love to see someone explain why they 'can't stand all this crap freedom from nonsense.' just out of curiosity - i can't imagine being anything but ambivalent towards a record label that really does nothing but, you know, put out records.

back on topic, i saw caroliner/nautical almanac/air conditioning/newton in bethlehem, pa. 3 out of 4 ain't bad, and caroliner was great, almost metal sounding at times but still caroliner-y.

your null fame (yournullfame), Saturday, 19 April 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh it was a pretty good show even no doctors were more than tolerable. it seems like they've been practicing more for better and for worse. caroliner had a very comprehensive neon shtick.

Amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 19 April 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
doing research on whicg Caroliner record to buy. have all yr choices remained the same? and, mr. roger adultery, if you're interested i have a copy of that Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase LP I can tape or burn for you if you want. it's pretty bizarre. i saw that guy (whose name I forget all the time) play with another band of his, Barn Owl, a long time back in Providence (with Brian C. from Lightning Bolt performing solo with drums & electronics)

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahhh, Caroliner. Although the Sun City Girls always appealed more to my sensibilities back in the day (still do, I guess), reading copies of Bananafish in my room as a teenager in North East England, they always seemed like the ultimate outsider group, the real deal. Oddly enough, the only LP I own is 'Rear End Hernia Puppet Show', which is the one which features 'Outhouse of the Pryeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee'. My box had some random Christmas cards, pages ripped out of a German physics textbook and some weird drawings in biro. I'm glad I didn't get the LP that came packed in some stinky, weird looking old clothes tho'. I had no idea they were still going, as the chances of finding any of their LPs in this fucking country these days are out th' window like thee preverbial 19th Century rolling head.

radio morocco (radio morocco), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Jake Anderson to thread!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, which Caroliner records are MOST essential and WHAT do they sound like? I have the one in the diaper bag and its nice and fun,b ut I only listen to it once every month or so (as opposed to my nearly daily rotations of Boredoms and Lightning Bolt and my weekly runs through the Ruins, Wolf Euyes and Black Dices discographies)

GET TO THA' (PRICE) CHOPPA!!!!!!!! ROFFLE!!!!!!!! (ex machina), Friday, 7 May 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Caroliner ever play the East Coast anymore? I've been checking their show schedule for a few years now but don't remember seeing anything.

Reatards Unite, Monday, 17 March 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

saw them play at a college in bethlehem, pa in 2003 i think. very memorable show.

i was at that show! good one, too, air conditioning just about blew out the glass.

update: Wizard Prison cancelled for the Seattle show. However, AFCGT are taking their place.

AFCGT = A-Frames + Climax Golden Twins. So the lineup for the 6/2 show is now...

AFCGT
Alvarius B.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 1 May 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

A-Frames + Climax Golden Twins

Whuh. This sounds utterly amazing.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 May 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

Uh yeah! As a fan of both groups, I'm really curious. I know A-Frames have done jammy noisy stuff before.. via their Neu! cover of "Weisensee". On the other hand, you never know what you get with a Twins show.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 1 May 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

i've got some weird AFCGT cdr on my itunes at home, will ysi tonight if people are interested. it's good.

ian, Thursday, 1 May 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

yes plz

sleeve, Thursday, 1 May 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, AFCGT cdr is good, though not exactly great. More "interesting": basically formless studio jams, though the superpsychedelic last track is killer. More than anything else, it makes me curious about what come next.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 08:40 (seventeen years ago)

I saw them in Portland. They always look great. I wish they sounded great. I feel bad saying that too because I know several current members...

Definitely visually worth the price of admission. Grux's art is something to behold.
