(a) much call for the use of this popular conversational readymade on yor local 'scene'?
(b) & global-scale applications? (substituting the word 'music' for 'band' as & where necess. of course*)

In later years, Paul McCartney.

Being a scene teen in Minneapolis, c. '83-86, YES YES YES!

It got to the point where I just couldn't face the idea of local all- ages shows because if the group sucked I'd have to see people out and not know where to look when my opinion was asked for!

These days in London, I find this is the rule rather than the exception. I won't name names!

An acquaintance of mine met Lenny Kravitz for work-related reasons. He swears up and down that Kravitz is really nice and down-to-earth.

Knowing that doesn't make actually wanna go out and buy a Lenny Kravitz album, I must add.

There's an obvious corollary to this thread -- "He's/She's an asshole, but his/her music is great."

Has anyone done a thread like that in here?

That one would fill up all available diskspace, knowing how broken a lot of musicians are.

A couple of years ago, at a wedding I met a singer/songwriter gent named Peter Stuart and ended up becoming friends with the guy. He fronted a band at the time called Dog's Eye View, who had a minor VH1 hit with "Everything Falls Apart." A truly lovely, funny, generous, beer-buyin' gent....but *OOOOF* if his band didn't ever suck!

You people have got this all wrong. It should be "he's an asshole, but his band sucks." Thurston Moore is the nicest guy I've ever met. His band sucks. Kim Gordon's a bitch though, so maybe that's why I like some of their records.

Locally, Tim Kinsella.

Fuck local scenes. Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20 seems like a really sweet guy, but his music is so bad that it makes me want to spit on him. I wholeheartedly believe assholes and tossers make the best music.

Ally, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Er, absolutely, Ally.

Momus, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Name me one nice person making good music.

Ally, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Music YOU will think is good? :)

Josh, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, that's going to be the way to win this argument, yes ;)

Ally, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm always *FAR* more surprised when musicians I admire turn out to be nice rather than turn out to be raving arses. However, do I think that many musicians use this to *justify* their own spoiledness and bad behaviour? Yes.

masonic boom, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wonder how many musicians act like jerks in the belief that it'll make for better reading when somebody writes a book about them 10 years hence?

tarden, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tarden, of course. Of course. Of course. That's pretty much the only reason to act like an asshole, honestly.

Ally, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, there's an even better reason - audiences are shit. They have poor taste, they always ask to get on the guest list, they walk up to the bar while you're playing, and they've all got dumb opinions even though they don't have as much elite musical knowledge as you. Fuck 'em. If you're in a band and you have an opportunity to treat somebody like garbage, DO IT!!!

tarden, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't help but wholeheartedly agree. If I was famous, I'd spit on people and laugh. Just like Courtney Love.
