1) 'Cross of Iron' vs 'Cabaret'

2) 'Give 'em Enough Rope' vs 'Unforgettable Fire'

3) Product placements for Fender, Marshall vs pp's for Strand, Canadian Club

4) "Golden Age of Leather" ("our best years have passed us by") vs "Just Another High" (the voice, man, who needs lyrics? BOC did tho cuz they didn;t have any good singers)

5) (S Pearlman/P Smith/R Meltzer/D Roeser/A Bouchard/I Hunter/H Robbins [tho NOT M Moorcock]) vs (B Ferry/B Eno/P Manzanara/A Mackay/P Thompson/E Jobson sometimes/1000xbassplayer)[tho NOT Philadelphia International])

6) More in the general-thematic-thrust-as-perceived-by-me dept - "Career of Evil" vs "Love is the Drug", "Don't Fear the Reaper" vs "Psalm", "I Love the Night" vs "Sunset", "She's as Beautiful as a Foot" vs "In Every Dream Home a Heartache", 'Heavy Metal' vs '9.5 Weeks'(shticks coarsened for geek consumption), "ME 262" vs "Das Lied der Deutschens", "Flaming Telepaths" vs "Casanova", "True Confessions" vs "Three and Nine", "This Ain't the Summer of Love" vs "2HB" (ie Altamont vs 'Hollywood Babylon')

7) Long Cheyne-Stokes period induced by BOC sacking their producer for being too good a lyricist and RM sacking their drummer for being too good a drummer, smart huh?

Hornswoop me bungo pony, CPL 5938!

Actually I just like both because they mention Canadians ("Red and the Black", "Mother of Pearl")

Röxy Müsic, but I'm predictable like that

BOC. At one point in my life I actually contemplated getting the symbol as a tattoo. They still rock live too, BTW. I've seen them every summer for four years in a row now. Still a big fucking thrill to hear numbers like 'last days of may' and 'teen archer' live.

Disagree re Eric Bloom was a great singer, for the material. Always found it funny that the "big three" were all sung/written by Buck.

They DID work with Moorcock ("veterans of psychic wars"). or did I just misunderstand and you were you expressing disproval w/ that association?

2 of my fave bands! & hawkwind are like the missing link between the 2, sorta

seaside villages on flame with rocknroll, Monday, 30 December 2002 11:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Missing link is actually John Cale (A Lanier > P Smith > Cale (produced 'Horses') < Nico < Eno/Manzanara)

dave q, Monday, 30 December 2002 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Also both bands had yecchy pre-stardom names respectively redolent of slimy insects and unpleasant bodily emissions (Soft White Underbelly, Gas Board)

blue oyster cult, because they always played the ventura theater when i lived there. never saw them, but they were there.

Missing link is actually John Cale (A Lanier > P Smith > Cale (produced 'Horses') < Nico < Eno/Manzanara)

Ah yes, Cale... I was trying to think of the missing link last night. Also Eno/Cale did Wrong Way Up.

You could also do A Lanier > P Smith > Cale > Jerry Harrison (Cale produced the first Modern Lovers album) > Talking Heads > Eno

Dude, "Godzilla", c'mon.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 02:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really have anything interesting to say here, but BOC had a couple of decent singles. Roxy Music is perhaps my favorite band ever. That's all.

When shit hits the fan at work NOTHING works like Avalon on headhones. Other then various Rheostatics albums, its the only one people borrow from me.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 06:18 (twenty-three years ago)

BOC had at least one great album in Agents of Fortune. And, hey, Patti Smith sings on one track + Allan Lanier played on Horses.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Roxy Music. But I do secretly like "Don't Fear The Reaper."

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 31 December 2002 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Roxy Music, even if they never used sufficient COWBELL in their tunes.
