"Mundian To Bach Ke" by Punjabi MC...

...has only received one mention on ILM so far. Is there a reason for this? Number two in Germany, apparently, which is good enough reason for Britain to enter the Euro system immediately and without question. It's not often single of the year is decided by January 13th, but... wow. This is fecking great.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 2 January 2003 12:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

i first heard it on a 30 minute DJ set by FunDaMental/Rich from Nation Records for XFM's 'Remix' show - in November 2001, back when this was on SUnday afternoons, so fantastic to hear stuff like that at that time on daytime radio.

so really it was the single of 2001! - funny how long it takes for these things to really pick up though eh? i do agree that its brilliant

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 January 2003 12:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

'Mundian Te Bach Ke' means 'Beware Of The Boys' apparently

and i kept meaning to put that FunDaMental set back online for download so this might happen quicker now

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 January 2003 12:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's like Knight Rider, but with a smidge more bass... ace, but it'd be acer if I could just shake this feeling that Radio 1 have only playlisted it to promote the BBC Asian Network.

Dom - why you not on MSN?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 2 January 2003 12:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Isn't Mundian Te Bach Ke already number 2 on the UK dance charts right now? It's absolutely ace of course...

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 2 January 2003 12:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's from well before 2001 - it's on the Rough Guide To Bhangra, and dates from the late 90s, around the time of Busta's "Fire It Up". I'd heard it was getting a reissue - very, very good tune, big favourite of Isabel's.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 2 January 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

everyone went 'Knight Rider' crazy in '98/'99 evidently...i'm not sure what prompted the re-issue though...could it have been inspired by FunDaMental?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 January 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

also, this is very much like the Liam Lynch 'Whatever' thing - track from a few years back does not make the impact it should initially - somehow gets picked up by a couple of movers and shakers, then eventually gets a fanfare release and copious airplay...how does this work? why does it work more importantly?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 January 2003 13:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

track from a few years back does not make the impact it should initially
Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar is another example of this.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 2 January 2003 13:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

when was 'Cafe Del Mar' originally recorded let alone released! i first heard it in Jan '97 but its at least '95 isnt it?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 January 2003 13:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I believe it was even further back that that... 1993 wasn't it?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 2 January 2003 13:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'd say its a bit different with european club tracks like that tho because there's always a gap of at least a year between when a record is first played out and picked up by respective club DJs and when it gets picked up by a major label, remixes are negotiated and the track finally charts, its a torrid, laborious process really as those who pick up on the track first are sick of it by the time they are actually hearing it everywhere - the fact that 'Mundian Te Bach Ke' is 3 or 4 years old but only making an impact over the last 12 months could be more to do with timing (the Indian vibe trend in urban pop this year?) and the fact that you cant really remix it like you could something like 'cafe del mar'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 January 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Originally released in 1993 indeed, became big with the 1997 remixes (and again a chart hit in 2002, although not in the UK).

Another example: Wildchild - Renegade Master

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 2 January 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

I believe it was even further back that that... 1993 wasn't it?

now thats scary

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 January 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

'Renegade Master' was a big enough hit (#11 in the chart) when originally released in the UK in '96 but i know it emerged in early '95, probably for the Miami Music COnference (as Stardust did in '98 and Shakedown did this year) so recorded in '94 i figure

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 January 2003 13:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

this was maybe the biggest track of 2002 at my club. i first got it around a year ago when my local newsagent gave me a panjabi mc cd knowing i was a ig music head. i played it out quite a bit but not as often as i should have as i don't really play cds. then, about three months ago i got a one sided 12" ootleg pressing of it which meant i could mix it in and it went ballistic. i can't remember the last time so many people asked about a record - punks, indie kids, electro heads and lots and lots of girls - always a sure sign of a top ten hit. i just hope that the foreign languagephobic uk public don't spurn it ecause it's not in english.

by the way - it seems to be getting a release everywhere this week -

PANJABI MC: Mundian To Bach Ke (Superstar Germany)
12": Mundian To Bach Ke (original mix, instrumental, Moonbootica mix, Banks & Sullivan "Oldskool" mix) (SUPERDJ 2053)
PANJABI MC: Mundian To Bach Ke (Instant Karma UK)
12": Mundian To Bach Ke ("Main" mix, Switch mix)/Mundian Breaks (KARMA 28T)
PANJABI MC: Mundian To Bach Ke (Italian mixes) (Time Italy) )
12": Mundian To Bach Ke (Motivo "Hi-Lectro" mix, original radio edit, Triple X remix) (MT 001)

cafe del mar was 93 yes, i think it was the first release on eye-q. it was popular at the time as well though

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 2 January 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Whoa...a Triple X mix!!!

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 2 January 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

gareth's right, it was big at the time. it was on that 'behind the eye' comp along with stuff like 'vernon's wonderland' and 'no fate'.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 2 January 2003 14:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

OK then, what about Love Inc - You're A Superstar? Four years old, only recently receiving promotion & a rerelease.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 2 January 2003 14:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

ok, you can have that ;)

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 2 January 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Punjabi MC first came out in 1998.

Cafe Del Mar got picked up with the late nineties trance boom when Nalin and Kane remixed it.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 2 January 2003 16:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

superstring, orange theme and the first bebirth also had multiple incarnations

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 2 January 2003 16:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Whatever year it first came out Punjabi MC Mundian To Back Ke is new to me, + the best thing I've heard all year ;-)

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 2 January 2003 16:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Re: Love Inc) ok, you can have that ;)

Well, we'll still have to wait and see if it really becomes a big hit.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 2 January 2003 16:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's already gone top 10 in the u.k..

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 2 January 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's like Knight Rider, but with a smidge more bass
i'm informed that it did originally sample knightrider but they redid the bassline themselves to avoid copyright issues (and to make it sound better)
haha it's big in germany cos of the david hasselhoff connection

minna (minna), Thursday, 2 January 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

i assume it only came about after someone heard Busta's 'Fire It Up' and thought 'hey!'

or was it the other way around?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 January 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

the album legalized was released in 1998, along with the track Mundian ke bach ke

Having heard all the remixes, the Moonbootica mix still remains the best one.

the Twista version kills Jay's.

good job sterl!

that jay-z verse has been in there the whole time though

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 26 September 2003 05:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

your are really on form lately, sterl. i'm so happy the jay verse is getting another look- i remember whoever did the village voice review being somewhat derisive - "only love kills war - haha oh jay you're really a hippie underneath all the ice". i think the osama-reagan parallels are k-important.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 26 September 2003 07:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

(the article was written ages and ages ago but only found a home recently & the original original jay remix before the single only had one verse as i recall. this is before the s. carter mixtape dropped)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 26 September 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

or maybe it was the s.carter mixtape vs the official single. its been a while.

haha wow drunk!

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 27 September 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

the anti-war lyrics in the "Mundian To Bach Ke" remix certainly changed my view of Jay-Z, made me regret some of the wilder comments about Hova (that he was "to socialism what Hitler was to Judaism", etc) in my Elidor piece which Sterling described as "great, although I totally disagree" ... one of Hova's greatest moments ever, an awesome cultural interjection.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Saturday, 27 September 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Boy, it sure doesn't take much to get props from lefties these days, does it. Or maybe we're just desperate. But forgive me if I'm underwhelmed by the significance of Jay's tossed-off four word aside about Iraq in the middle of the remix of someone else's song.

Ben Williams, Saturday, 27 September 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

but fundamentally I *don't like pop music*, you see; that's why I was so hardline sceptical of Jay-Z's worldview in the first place. that's why the "Mundian To Bach Ke" remix meant more to me than it would to certain other people on here, I suspect ...

robin carmody (robin carmody), Saturday, 27 September 2003 15:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

apparently lefties can't count or read either - it's more than four words Ben

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 27 September 2003 16:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ben Williams, Saturday, 27 September 2003 22:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, the concept of an echo chamber is pretty obscure to the left I know
