Did we do this already? If so, I never saw it. Anyway, mine's a toss-up between 'No Queen Blues' and 'Kissability'.

I'm going to forego with the predictable choice ("Teenage Riot") and go with "Death Valley `69," if only because of my infantile fascination with Charles Manson and my since re-considered desire to sleep with Lydia Lunch.

album I'd probably pick A Thousand Leaves. It's growing on me the most (Sister was my kneejerk response), so I'd probably get more out of it for a longer amount of time. Song I'd pick Schizophrenia.

When Im in a bad mood I'll take "Kill Yr Idols" since Im assuming this is OPO that isn't Teenage Riot.

"White Cross"... for variety's sake and cuz it's the most blatant Branca rip-off.

Another vote for "Wish Fulfilment". "Teenage Riot" is shit.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 3 January 2003 03:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

("The Diamond Sea" would have seemed the obvious choice to me though. "Teenage Riot" is so atypical anyway. "Secret Girl" is very underrated BTW.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 3 January 2003 03:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Gahd, everybody's going for early stuff aren't they? Tcha. I'll stick it to "Purr" for the time being.

Oh god...Disappearer is a doozy. Fuck. I'm gonna have to pull that out in sec here but...

why could you possibly argue that "Shadow Of A Doubt" isn't the most amazing piece of music you've ever heard in your life, now come on? GET OUTTA HEAR! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSc8957FoSQ

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 12 May 2008 05:57 (sixteen years ago) link

amaizng, now that i listen to this song again, how the first and last part of the song is Cure styled ( as they argue rightrfully on the comments) and the middle part is exactly like Thalia Zedek's "Live skull" ( as i argue)

Zeno, Monday, 12 May 2008 06:02 (sixteen years ago) link

maybe 'the sprawl' or 'total trash'

Charlie Howard, Monday, 12 May 2008 06:02 (sixteen years ago) link

why? Why won't you admit that "Shadow of A Doubt" is the most brilliant piece of music you've ever heard in your life? Why?

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 12 May 2008 06:11 (sixteen years ago) link

well EVOL is maybe my favourite sonic youth record. i like the fact that the songs are shorter.

i mispalced my copy of goo apparently. one of those instances where the cd isn't in the case and is most likely lost forever :(

I still say Disappearer, but JC is just this close from supplanting it...that song is utterly mindblowing...

Shadow of a Doubt is amazing. Two things:

1) I didn't get into SY until late, mainly bcz a) I was too young, and b) when I did get into them I lived in the middle of nowhere. The early stuff really wasn't available wherever I could go to buy records. Which means that DN, Goo, and Dirty were touchstones in my adolescence, but I almost entirely missed the boat on Sister and EVOL.

2) All the Kim-hate on ILX is total horse-hockey.

How about dem Sonic Youth closers!

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 12 November 2020 02:34 (four years ago) link

Kim’s whispering vocals don’t always work for me but they fit perfectly in “shadow of a doubt”. If this were a POX I would surely pick it.

Weird band to do a POO, no? Maybe I’m alone on this one but, Sonic Youth is one of those bands that I’m never in the mood to listen to just one song. Either I play several songs of them or I don’t play any. They do have songs like “teenage riot” or “inclnerate” that play well with others, but usually their songs disrupt the mood of whatever was playing before them.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 12 November 2020 03:51 (four years ago) link

The EVOL LP ends with Expressway to Yr Skull, which would be my choice for best closer. Peace Attack is also nicely autumnal contemplation.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 12 November 2020 04:17 (four years ago) link

^^ yeah the original lock groove vinyl of Expressway to Yr Skull should get the nod over the cd-bonus “Bubblegum” but agree with the “Peace Attack” praise. IMO “The Diamond Sea” and aforementioned “Expressway” get a higher tier. Good list!

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 12 November 2020 04:23 (four years ago) link

Any idea why Expressway to yr skull is missing from Spotify?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 12 November 2020 05:06 (four years ago) link

It's available for me. (As "Madonna, Sean, and Me" at least.)
