Not really going for a style, more of a "feeling" or vibe:
In vague-ish order:

Tom Waits: The Black Rider
Aphex Twin: Avril 14th
Van Dyke Parks: The All Golden
Beatles: When I'm Sixty-Four
REM: Electrolite
Savath & Savalas: Journey's Home
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci: (can't think of one, but I know they should be on here - any ideas?)
Daft Punk: Quo Vadis
Boo Radleys: New Brighton Promenade
Boards of Canada: Sixty-Niner

whatever you do, if you start with TW's "Black Rider" you should end with Frank Black's cover (or one of the two on his newish Black Letter Days alb) just for symmetry.

yes, i guess that gorky's choice would fit pretty well. That was a b-side wasn't it? I know i've got it on something but i can't remember.

Actually, for a good ending, instead of a cover of "The Black Rider," how about "Pirate-Jenny" from _The Threepenny Opera_, either in English or German? (The English version has the advantage of the bit about "and the SHIIIIIIIP, the black freighter..."--in German it's just about how the ship has eight sails and fifteen cannons.)

Sgt. Tinker, Friday, 3 January 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago) link

Blue Man Group - "Club Nowhere"

Curtis Stephens, Friday, 3 January 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago) link

also: Smashing Pumpkins - "Appels + Oranjes"

Curtis Stephens, Friday, 3 January 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago) link

heheh. I like all these choices cos they're so disparate but they all make sense in the context. What would be a good name for the comp? And what how would you describe it?

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 3 January 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago) link

Thanks for the suggestions. I have now compiled a full 80min CDR of multi-instrumental Victorian Gothic psychedlic harmonies.

Full tracklisting:

1. Tom Waits: The Black Rider
2. Aphex Twin: Avril 14th
3. Gorky's Zygotic Mynci: The Wizard and the Lizard
4. Van Dyke Parks: The All Golden
5. Daft Punk: Verdis Quo
6. The Beatles: When I'm 64
7. Boards of Canada: 1986 Summer Fire
8. The Delgados: Everything Goes Around the Water
9. dEUS: Me & Your Mother
10. Background music from "Look Around You"
11. The Beach Boys: You're Welcome
12. Salako: Look Left
13. The Faint: Mote*
14. CiM: Cloud Cover
15. Three-Penny Opera: Pirate-Jenny
16. Bonzo Dog Band: Rhinocratic Oaths
17. More music from "Look Around You"
18. Smashing Pumpkins: Appels & Oranjes
19. Gorky's Zygotic Mynci: Starmoonsun
20. Squarepusher: Mutilation Colony (the first bit)
21. Boo Radleys: Find the Answer Within (High Llamas Mix)
22. Savath & Savalas: Pablo
23. The Beach Boys: Country Air
24. The Residents: Moisture
25. I Monster: Daydream in Blue
26. The Beach Boys: Airplane

Would've put more, but this has exhausted the 80min run. Really digging this theme though. If anyone can suggest a suitable cover image for the comp, I'd really appreciate it.

*Who did this first btw? I've known the Sonic Youth version for years but didn't know this version. I'd say this is better

Sonic Youth did it originally.

Mr. Williams and I listened to the Faint version on New Year's Eve, really stoned and didn't realize we were listening at 33 not 45! Egad!
