Its called Xpectation and its up online for npg club members. Its his fusion jazz thang. No vocals just Prince jamming on guitar and rhodes. Vanessa Mae on violin, Candy Dulfer on sax, Rhonda Smith on bass John Blackwell on drums. (3/5 girl band!) Some of it is really sick some of it is really mellow and pretty. The rest is just blah. Very 70's Headhunters Benny Maupin, Weather Report Wayne Shorter stuff almost. I think its a just some jams he made with friends after his father died last year. He was a jazz guy and named Prince after his trio actually. I dunno. Heres the track listing.
01 - "Xhalation"
02 - "Xcogitate"
03 - "Xemplify"
04 - "Xpectation"
05 - "Xotica"
06 - "Xogenous"
07 - "Xpand"
08 - "Xosphere"
09 - "Xpedition"

"Xosphere"??

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I take it the X is to be pronounce as "ten" after the Romans?

Horace Mann, Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

"The outermost region of a planet's atmosphere"

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Xcrement

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

hehe.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Xactly, Christoff.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

10 yrs ago Prince coming out with a "XXX" album would mean something totally different!

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

why you all such haterz?

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

he played the Montreal Jazz Fest and rumor was that it was alright. but Candy Dulfer? Vanessa Mae? I think we have reason to be skeptical.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

It sounds like there'd have to be a least a couple-a nifty tracks -- it's just that (the artist currently known as) Prince can such a goofy fuk.

What ever happen to Cindy Blackman?

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked him better when he just went by "Palace Brothers".

Brass Hinges, Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I ain't no hata! But then I am not an NPG club member either, so the odds of me hearing this are close to zero. I'd be curious to hear this - being a big-fan of the more "out there" 70s electro-jazz fusion stuff - but your review does not really surprise me.

Still waiting for that 3-CD live set to be delivered tho.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

the 3 live cd set is out and you CAN hear it thats why i posted the track list (hint hint)

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

but Candy Dulfer? Vanessa Mae? I think we have reason to be skeptical.

i cant disagree here.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Did Cindy Blackman ever play for Prince? Perhaps you are thinking of Sheila E.?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 2 January 2003 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Jordon -- I don't even know what to make of that mistake; Blackman did some session work for Lenny Kravitz. ---Must be i fried too many brain cells this past holiday.

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 2 January 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

if I am a hata, it's only because I was once a lova...his decade plus of classic work is why I sound like a bitter ex-spouse when discussing him.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 January 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone seen that Kevin Smith DVD? He goes into great detail about a documentary he filmed at Prince's that will probably never see the light of day. The funniest part is when he talks about a conversation he had with one of Prince's assistants. Smith was asking the assistant about Prince's leisurewear -- or what he wears when he's not in full-on Prince mode. The assistant 'fessed that they go shopping for him at Nordstrom's. More specifically, they get his clothes from Nordstrom's boys dept.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 2 January 2003 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I find it hard to believe that he's ever *not* in full-on Prince mode.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 2 January 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

that piece on the Smith dvd is great. it certainly doenst show prince in a good light.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 2 January 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Xtremely unXciting.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 January 2003 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Vanessa Mae's involvement
(with anything, not least a Prince album)
is reason enough for not just scepticism but proper pessimism

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 3 January 2003 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did'ya hear? Prince just dangled Mayte out of a Paris hotel balcony window...

maria b (maria b), Friday, 3 January 2003 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone seen that Kevin Smith DVD?

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 3 January 2003 03:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Al (sitcom), Friday, 3 January 2003 05:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Chaki are you an NPG member? Which tracks are "really sick"? I want the funk not the fuzak, knowadimsayin? Can you get this on file-sharing doodads?

James Annett (jlannett), Friday, 3 January 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Cindy Blackman should play for Prince though! She is hotttt and way better than Sheila E. (nothing against Sheila), and Prince likes to have the ladeez in his bands.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 3 January 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki (chaki), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)
