If I was to buy only one Boredoms album, which should it be?

(yeah, i know there's like loads of boredoms threads up in this bitch, but i found most confusing and not at all helpful... also, i figured new peeples might have new stuff to say)

_gibby_, Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago) link

Buy the last album, Vision Creation Newsun. You won't regret it.

die9o (dhadis), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago) link

no, get super ae

(see, completely new original thread!)

zemko (bob), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago) link

dude buy pop tatari

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago) link

super æ

gygax!, Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago) link

yeah i looked on allmusic.com and Ned says pop tatari is key...

(new 'yeah but what does he know' answers)

_gibby_, Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, but Super Ae makes more sense after VCN. Oh whatever, they're all good.

die9o (dhadis), Thursday, 2 January 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, but Super Ae makes more sense after VCN.

for everyone or just you?

gygax!, Thursday, 2 January 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago) link

ummm... Super ae does it for me more than any other, though I love almost everything they've done. It's their most levitational/driven one.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 2 January 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago) link

Super æ . If you like the cosmic stuff on that then get VCN. If you like the noise then head for Pop Tatari and Chocolate Synthesiser.

robertw, Thursday, 2 January 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago) link

Super ae has more different things going on than VCN, and does incorporate some of what makes VCN so neat -- so if you can POO, that one.

"Yeah, but Super Ae makes more sense after VCN.

for everyone or just you?"

For me. I had Super Ae before any other Boredoms records, and thought it was okay (ie. I didn't get it). But then I heard VCN and it tore my head off. Afterwards I had a much bigger appreciation for Super Ae. It's a great album, and I sometimes go back and forth between liking that one and VCN more.

I definitely see the point of recommending Super Ae as an introduction over Vision Creation Newsun--it is more varied. I recommended the latter because of my overwhelming reaction to it the first time I heard it--which would of course be different from listener to listener. That said, I've played it for many customers at the record store where I worked and all but one or two have bought it on the spot. It seems to have a pretty strong appeal.

die9o (dhadis), Friday, 3 January 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago) link

Super Æ. it's more varied, and that dentist drill sound... man that shit kicks ass when eye remixes it into some sort of hip hop beat.

someone needs to close the italicizing, it wouldn't let me

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago) link

super ae is my pick, i think. and everything after it and maybe a bit before it.

d k (d k), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago) link

try this

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh well -- Super AE is my choice, too, but VCN would work for anyone looking for just one. I cannot for the life of me see why someone wanting 1 Boredoms would go for Pop Tatari.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago) link

How about this

Fixed, I think.

Another vote for Super AE

(by the way, any news on the Rebore discs being released domestically in north america?)

Bryan N, Friday, 3 January 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago) link

yeh - super ae is OK if ye forget the bits that sound like pete townshend circa tommy. perhaps the most amon duul of the reckids they've done. VCN is more or less a 70min cover version of can's "future days" (in a good way). pop tatari and wow2 always strick me as a badly produced heavy amateur metal band like you might see in any pub or student union bar no tunes v. ploddy not "motorik" but het how wacky they got a trumpet player. if you want the kerayzee spazz annoying boredoms the go for soul discharge '77 is good but i like chocolate synthesizer better.

bob snoom, Friday, 3 January 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago) link

super ae, vcn = snobby indie drone
pop tatari, chocolate synth = fun noisey rock.

I assume you're talking about "Super Going" -- but why would I want to forget about that?! That guitar tone was incredible, both in 1969 and 1999.

super ae, vcn = snobby indie drone

??? Would you describe the Grand Canyon as snobby & indie?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago) link

yes. yes i would.

Jess, that's a good track but it doesn't hold up to Super Going or Super Coming (best Boredoms vocals ever).

I really like some of the earlier (~1993) live stuff with two vocalists and Yoshimi doing those really throaty yells. (There's a great video on slsk from this era that features a music video of one of the songs from Super Roots)

I'm going to say Vision Creation Newsun - Super AE is very invnetive and a close second but VCN seems so perfect an album that you just can't fuck with it.
