The Girls (Classic or Dud) vs. Mission of Burma

Now that I got your attention, let's get this over with once and for all, if possible. Direct from the Mission of Burma Classic or Dud thread. Who the f**k here care's, or has even heard about The Girls? A bunch of dorks from Boston who released 1 stinking holy grail of a 7" 23 odd years ago? They seem to be in the process of being completely vindicated. Cosloy is rattling about them on the Matador boards, a review of their "Live at the Rat" cd in the recent issue of the Wire. Some folks seem to care. C or D?

i've got a live recording which is pretty dull. it simply screeches 'twee new wave'. yes, the single is pretty good - just add them to the plethora of one hit wonders from the time.

Cosloy is rattling about them on the Matador boards

Of course he is. Would you expect anything less?

This is a man who is down w/ Matmos and Large Professor, you must understand.

this whole argument is silly. both bands are important, especially to the Boston scene at the time. moreover, just because a band only released one single in their lifetime, doesn't diminish their importance or what they did musically (listen to the fake reunion album released int he late 80's, which is really the girls in their first and only reincarnation). you can knock cosloy for lots of shit, but for realizing the greatness of the Girls isn't one of them -- something he would know from being from that scene.

finaly analysis: both the Girls and Mission of Burma are classic.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 3 January 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

easy way to solve this, as with all musical who's more important questions: who's won more awards?

Let's see...MOB won three Grammys, but the Girls won an Oscar and a Cleo, and since one Oscar = three grammys (at Chuck Sorenson's Southside Pawn & Guns) ergo Girls win by a Cleo!

let's all agree to let science rule and avoid these bitter, subjective feuds.

Horace Mann, Friday, 3 January 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah. They GIRLS didn't have much output and the world is better for it. Just because a wank like Roger Miller was quoted by Cliff Claven clone Eric M. Van as saying that they were great doesn't mean anyone but a bunch of empty headed goiks has to buy into the hype.
The most important things. Are the GIRLS actually women and are the fuckable? If fuckable, do they fuck? If they fuck, do they fuck like houses on fire? If so, can I get some? I reckon this band has got to be in their 50's or 60's by now so their golden age of fuckability is long gone. The only person who'd probably be in the game of fucking these bags is that guy in Burma who's been fucking everything in site but his loudmouth wife.

This is twee new wave????

Venus Glow (1411), Saturday, 4 January 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

new wave = packaged major label "punk" with the edges sandpapered off for mass consumption, hardly a description that fits the Girls at all. New Wave is the Chubby Checkers of Rock.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 4 January 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

They look like classic 1977 art-punk to me. Weird-oh's indeed.

Two Tone Tommy, Saturday, 4 January 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The question really is: WHO THE FUCK EVEN KNOWS ABOUT THESE TWO BANDS? Come on, do you really think that they are important to anyone except a few geeks who only like music made by obscure bands no one knows enough about to say they SUCK? If these bands were so FUCKING IMPORTANT why didn't the world stopped spinning when they broke up? Let's get real. The Girls weren't even as good as the fucking PAJAMA SLAVE DANCERS!

Boys Against Girls, Saturday, 4 January 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Boys against Girls:

I disagree with you wholeheartedly! I think the Girls were just as good, if not a tad better, than infamous Pajama Slave Dancers! You can take that to the bank and spend it!

CHA CHA, Saturday, 4 January 2003 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The world can use your wisdom like your mother needs another date rape, the kind that spawned a dipshit bastard like you. Thanks for your support!

Let's list the logical fallacies in your argument:

1. Ad Hominem Abusive
2. Appeal to Ridicule
3. Straw Man

etc.

I could go on, but what's the point? Stick a fork in this thread -- it's done.

Ain't dead yet. I present to you: PAJAMA SLAVE DANCERS

Yuck-o..

WHO THE FUCK EVEN KNOWS ABOUT THESE TWO BANDS
Many remenber. Where have you been? The Girls were one of the few bands circa 1976-79 in the Northeast doing Post-garage Punk Rock. They had a synth player now in Cul de Sac. The Girls guitarist lit himself on fire during a performance. I like that.

an example of the Pajama Slave Dancers' scintilating lyrics:

"Homo Truck Drivin' Man"

10-4, good buddy, headin' down the line.
I see them little boys and they sure look fine.
I like to take theirs, then I give 'em mine.
'Cause I'm a homo truck drivin' man.

Headin' down the line and I need some gas.
I put it into overdrive, movin' out to pass.
Then I pick up some little feller and I screw him up the ass.
'Cause I'm a homo truck drivin' man.

Well... when you're hitchhikin' down that road and ya
See that big rig comin' for ya
And it's painted lavender,
Well friends, you better stay out of its way.
'Cause we all know way deep down inside that truck driver's
Powerful gay.
Who is he?
Everybody now!

I always wondered what might happen if you crossed the Mentors with the Big Bopper.

to answer the original question, though the band is classic, Live at the Rathskeller isn't quite classic due to poor recording. Definitely not something I would recommend to someone who was going to listen to the Girls for the first time. The place to start is the Girls Box that Abaton Book Company offers, which includes the fake reunion LP and a cd-r of the Hearthan single.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 5 January 2003 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The GIRLS were guys? Who'd a thunk it?

Slant Mekongi, Sunday, 5 January 2003 02:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the live cd is just amazing, recording quality be damned. Start there. That Reunion lp is interesting but somewhat "Girls play smooth jazz." The instrumentals found on the Reunion lp on the other hand are quite interesting. I just like the good old feedback and screaming on the Live Rat cd. Punk rock, YES!

The Hearthan single is a classic masterpiece.

The reunion album is faked, I don't get it??

v

V (1411), Sunday, 5 January 2003 05:28 (twenty-three years ago)

the "reunion" album is really just recordings from their first and only incarnation. also, dont get me wrong about the Live album -- i agree with you that it's amazing -- i just might not recommened it for everyone as a starting place with the Girls (really the best is place to start is the single).
