Anja Garbarek anyone?

Long been curious about this woman, but the pricey imports have put me off from taking a chance. The "hook" for me is Mark Hollis's and Robert Wyatt's involvement. I've often heard her mentioned in the same breath as Stina Nordenstam (who I rather like), but the one track I heard neither sounded much like S.N. nor impressed me terribly on the whole.

But anyways I'm wondering what you all think.

No need to answer C/D, by the way.

BTW!! there ISN'T THAT MUCH to search, or destroy, anyway -- 1999's Balloon Mood and 2001's Smiling and Waving, basically; both of them good records too, methinks
there's rumoured to've been the Norwegian-only - or Scandinavian-only?? - debut album she's said to be pretty ashamed of herself, but that'd be quite difficult to track down anyway (i for one would be curious, though, as to how that sounds)

Her debut album is very mainstream and stylistically unremarkable (1992-vintage glossy-production pop), but competent and enjoyable enough if you like that sort of thing. _Balloon Mood_ struck an interesting balance between quiet a la Stina Nordenstam and exuberance a la Bjork, but for me _Smiling and Waving_ didn't follow through on it.

"Balloon Mood" is a classic. Sort of Björk-like, but still just as highly original as her.

You realise she is the daughter of jazz sax player Jan Garbarek?

I was ever so slightly underwhelmed by 'smiling and waving', a couple of nicely odd songs but overall kind of unsubstantial. also, cloying in spots. I want to like her, maybe will search for 'balloon mood'.

Smiling and Waving sounds very good to my ears, yet fails to generate much excitement for some reason. It's kinda soul-less. Much like the new Ecstatsy of Saint Theresa album.
I remember liking the Norwegian debut in Oslo and liking it (in a 92 stylish glossy pop kinda way). I see it's still available in Norway, any chance of finding it abroad?

Hah - I was gonna write OTM and then realized that I wrote that last post...

Anyway she released an album earlier this year "Briefly Shaking", but I can't find a single review of it. Has anyone heard it?

"Briefly Shaking" is OK but hardly up to the standards of "Balloon Mood".

Didn't sound like that big a difference to me really.

is it any different from Smiling and Waving?

I think the main difference is in the sound. She has been working with Icelandic producer Gisli who is a real Beck nutter and he has brought a kind of Beck-influenced sound with him. So it's more samples and less analogue-sounding synth sounds.

the video for the single "The last trick" is definitely a highlight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJXIMF6g8LU

It is much different from Smiling and Waving--more rock. It has its moments.
