The fucker upstairs at The Lounge in Northampton on Thursday nights two years ago - Steps - Tragedy AND that Placebo song about a paperbag. No wonder I drank too much at university.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Ron Hardy always used to open with Frankie's 'Welcome to the Pleasure Dome' (not that i was there, or anything)

Radiohead were v popular with dance types circa OK Computer, esp 'Fitter Happy'

the Avalanches playing 'Welcome to the Jungle' is fave memory of mine, but I suppose it doesn't really count coz the whole point of the Avalanches is that they play non dance records...

Robin Goad (rgoad), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Does Orbital and Belinda count?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

It's all good really, I was just thinking about this. With DC it's like an extension of his personality I think, the DJ trying to tell you more about themselves with one seemingly off the wall record than with the whole rest of the set.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i guess joey beltram played metallica at some point or other?? claude young drops quite a bit of other stuff in from time to time as well

i dont actually like this trend at all, why do all djs suddenly break the vibe of a set to pretend they're down the student union with talking heads records? sheesh, eclecticism, it'll be the death of us all in the end.

gareth (gareth), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's good if it's the same record each time, once, for not too long a period of time. like maybe you see him do it twice. I dislike say the DJs doing a tribute record, like London Calling in the middle of a techno set on NYE for example.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

What about "Hi Ho Silver Lining" by Jeff Beck? Everyone plays that, don't they?

Um, that wasn't actually the sort of thing you meant was it?

No, you're right, I haven't actually been to one of those discotheque places for quite a while.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 3 January 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

like London Calling in the middle of a techno set on NYE for example

Did someone actually do this? It would have moved me to a near homicidal rage had it happened in my earshot.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 3 January 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

oh come on rickyt, its obvious who did this isnt it?

Dave Clarke? (secondary guess=andy tartan trousers weatherall?)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 3 January 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

as an aside: DJS STOP PLAYING I FEEL LOVE AND BLUE MONDAY EVERY TIME I GO OUT THEY ARE IN SERIOUS DANGER OF BEING WORN OUT YOU LAZY FUCKS!

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 3 January 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to hear more DJ's play "Come to Daddy"

Curtis Stephens, Friday, 3 January 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a Minneapolis DJ (Kevin Cole?) who used to spin hard house and UK hardcore records, getting progressively harder and faster until he hit proto-gabber... then would slam in "People Everyday" by Arrested Development. It was GENIUS; I've never seen a club erupt like that before.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 3 January 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

that really worked??

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 3 January 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it did. I was shocked as hell but loving every minute of it and, by the rapt faces all around me, so was everyone else.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 3 January 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

often it's the moments of contrast that bring the whole night into relief, like when derrick may plays hard for a couple of hours and then drops 'mighty real'. everything gets flipped. i love those moments.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 3 January 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

It wasn't Dave Clarke! It was this Dublin jock called Francois who I later confronted about his interview in the times last week where he made some wild criticisms of moder dance music yadda yadda yadda, his response was "yes I am bitter".

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 3 January 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

You went to the Lounge... whilst at university? What was it like being 10 years older than everyone else in there?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 3 January 2003 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Mah-na Mah-na

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

4hero seamlessly working "just to get a rep" by Gang Starr into a d&b set, around 96/97 or so, I suppose a lot of d&b lads mix in hiphop, but that was glorious...

Conor (Conor), Saturday, 4 January 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i'd forgotten about that francois interview,it was such bollox...
he's obviously just spouting pseudo controversial opinions in interview so that he can get one last bit of attention before he retires...
he should just admit that he's sick of it,and stop all this misty eyed shit...

robin (robin), Saturday, 4 January 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I couldn't get too into it cos he was good friends with my friend who introduced me and it was awkward. Robin were you at the Creation thing? I was sick and couldn't make it but when it got busted my mates went to Tivoli and Phil(th) my friend got to DJ after David Holmes. He said it was the best set he's ever done, but most people asked him "who are you"!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 4 January 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah the creation thing was excellent while it lasted-a huge crowd, quality djs,but just as it was getting going a fuckload of police turned up and made them shut it down...i know in the past they've been told they can go on until eight in the morning,so i dunno why it was shut down this time,i think maybe they just got enough men there in time...
fifty police shutting it down because the large concrete structure, supported by steel, and fairly wet because it was raining outside, was deemed a fire hazard...meanwhile in town, people getting their heads kicked in with even less police around to stop fights than usual...
it was announced that david holmes was free in,so we went up to the tivoli, but when we got there they were charging a fiver in...luckily our plan for after was to go to a friends house a few minutes away, but it was still fairly annoying...i heard david holmes was shit and the guy afterwards banged it out,i presume that was your mate,i dont think i've ever seen him play though...

robin (robin), Sunday, 5 January 2003 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Heard shocking stuff about Holmes, mate said he had tears in his eyes after!
