Best Kiss Album Cover

Kiss or whoever selected their cover art is under-heralded for finding a midway ground between artsy Hipgnosis stuff and leave-it-to-the-boys-up-in-marketing dullness. The first album sleeve is nothing special but after that things get pretty interesting, no?

A: yes!! Dressed to Kill is so beautiful it's scary. Also, a glossy Tiger Beat-style magazine which I read but couldn't afford to buy when I was 10 years old or so spun a really awesome "Kiss is dead and have been replaced by androids" story which I'd guess was the inspiration for "Phantom of the Park" -- there was a transcript of the tape that had been found in the wreckage of the car that killed them all, and explanation of how each album cover contained Abbey-Road-stylee "clues" to tell the fans The Truth About Kiss i.e. that they are no more and have been replaced by drones

oh come now someone besides me has to think that both Rock and Roll Over and Dressed to Kill are triumphs of album design

Destroyer is best because they're skipping like little girls

Garbage bags filled with money?

I can remember thinking as a kid that i thought the cover to Hotter Than Hell was really dirty.

....But a few years later i stuck the stickers included in Rock and Roll Over album on my little kiddie record system. ¥

No single album cover has ever appealed to me more than this:

Practically every one of their makeup-era album covers is striking in some way, for better or worse: Rock and Roll Over...Love Gun...Alive II...the 1978 Solo albums...Unmasked...Creatures of the Night...

I dunno, Joe.....cover-wise (to say nothing of the music), this was *NOT* their finest hour:

C'mon Alex! Let The Fox hypnotize you with his glowing eyes!! :)

(doubtlessly I'm gonna get struck by lightning now)

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 4 January 2003 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I just looks like they're all trying to cram into the "photobooth of the night".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 4 January 2003 06:23 (twenty-three years ago)

IT just looks, I should say.

'Love Gun'. Greenish covers are difficult to pull off but when it works, it's amazing. Plus I think the situation depicted on the cover inspired me to work more assiduously on the craft of music, it's like the 72 virgins for aspiring axe-slingers.

one year passes...
I like the Unmasked and Destroyer album covers.

For me, nothing beats this:

Amazing rock-god poses and even a nod to the incipient Kiss Army. (Military-style font used to render the title.)

I have a weak spot for Hotter than Hell, even though, technically, it's kind of shitty.

darin (darin), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

kind of?!

Edward Bax (EdBax), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 02:40 (nineteen years ago)

What's shitty about this??
http://www.rockdetector.com/assets/img/covers/21849.jpg
Let's see, we have the pop-art (slash) japanese thing going, po-mo thumb elements (w/ green polish, no less), very colorful abstractions, super dynamic rock pose, with cat on star child man love. You must be goin' blind, cuz this cover is Hotter Than Hell!

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

nine years pass...

i like to imagine them shouting "wheeeeeee!" and "yipeeeee!" on the cover of Destroyer
