The miracle of digital editing: Shania Twain's Up! (Brown Mix)

After a comment made by anthony in which he mentioned to me that the new Shania Twain album was GREBT when you listen to both mixes of it AT THE SAME TIME, I decided to borrow a copy of it and digitally graft the two together. Some of it sounds pretty much like the original mix on both albums, but other parts are a bit more fukt up, like the ones where they come in at different times, simulating a round; in other cases, different vocal effects on the two mixes has provided a phasing effect in the merged version. In the best, a slight offset has given a loping kind of quality to the rhythm, making them very interesting indeed ("Ka-Ching!" actually sounds very interesting this way, I think).

I've temporarily posted a couple of these online so you can check them out if you're so inclined: Click here and then post your comments!

if I'm able to check then grebt: if not then you must tell me whether it has a cecil taylor like complexity or not OK?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 3 January 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ka-Ching! = southern bounce
listen to that break!

thank you for this!

Al (sitcom), Friday, 3 January 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah! sounds spectacular like this, with a real tight wall of sound feel.

There should totally be listening parties like with Zareeka.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 3 January 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i was about to say, this is way better than Zaireeka! i hadn't heard anything off this record but i'm on the verge of going out and copping it now! does every song title have an exclamation point!?!? i think this thread should follow suit!

Al (sitcom), Friday, 3 January 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

About half of them have an exclamation point! So go easy. Okay!

Next project planned: finding the Blue (world music) version of the album and digitally grafting that one on top of the other two.

If I'm feeling really dumb, I might try to graft Peter Gabriel's Up on, too.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

That "Ka-Ching" should be on the next DJ Rupture.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 3 January 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I never thought I could enjoy Shania Twain as much as this!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, "Nah!" is RIDICULOUSLY BRILLIANT this way! It's like John Tavener writing a pop song.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

!!! My head beautifully, evilly hurts with that description, Dan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

coming next: the part where Sean mixes the international version with the country and rock versions! (which I'd like to hear you do, seriously)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Send me MP3 files of the Blue mix and thy will be done.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 3 January 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

the hiccup-y vocal-l-ll-l-ll-o-grams of Up! are absolutely hilarious
(not quite to MisstaMutt's taste you betcha)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 3 January 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

chaki (chaki), Friday, 3 January 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

o man Sean this stuff is totally brilliant, for real

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Friday, 3 January 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

What are you doing later, Sean? Come by the studio.

Mutt Lange (MarkR), Saturday, 4 January 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ahahaha!!

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 4 January 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Uupp!!" = the Coors as Max Headroom.

I'll 42nd everyone's comments re: the awesomeness of this enterprise.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 4 January 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolutely the best. I never want to hear these versions in isolation.

Amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 4 January 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want to hear the originals now to hear how they sound separate. The bridge of "Ka-Ching!" in particular, is extremely cool.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Saturday, 4 January 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i really dig the idea of putting out a package 2 discs of distinctly different mixes of the same album...it occurs to me that i really wish N*E*R*D had done this instead of just re-recording and disowning the original tracks.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 4 January 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn. I'm pissed because I have the red and blue discs. I want that green disc. Swap, anyone?

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 4 January 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, so I've downloaded a couple MP3s from the Blue disc and started on some digital surgery but haven't gotten too far yet, because the percussion on the Blue version of the disc seems too busy in a way that may not be aurally compatible with the other two, unfortunately. I've done one "white" mix of Ka-Ching so far but I don't know if I'm satisfied with it, so haven't posted it yet. "I also tried "Nah" but the timing is thrown off enough that it doesn't sound charmingly like a round anymore, just like cacophony. I'll keep you posted.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

There's now a "white" version of "Ka-Ching" in that directory, but be forewarned that it's a bit messy in the chorus. It'd probably be a bit better if I sync'd up some of the parts a bit better, which would eliminate the loping "southern bounce" feel to it, most likely. For the time being I don't have the motivation to do any more fine-detail work, with the tools I have at my disposal. Maybe over the next couple weeks, if anyone really wants me to pursue this.

Direct link to the new version right here (I hope).

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Errrr...HELP!

Are you lot seriously suggesting that Shaniah Twain, of all friggin' people, has gone and released multiple versions of her new album, depending where you live? I mean, like the bespoke Bowie comps weren't daft enough!

So how many versions are there? And can you *really* do a Zaireeka with 'em? (by which I mean, they're all that close in tempo & all?)

My head is spinning at the idea, though sadly not at the actual listening due to singular lack of appropriate technology.

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

North America gets the Red and Green discs, the rest of the world gets Red and Blue. The difference between Red and Green is mostly that of effects, mixing and slight editing, but the Blue seems to be an overhaul with new percussion and other instrumentation (though much of the foundation is probably still the same, and it's probably all sync'd up using Superior Studio Techniques(tm). Pulling a Zaireeka with these albums is not as easy as you'd think, I'm guessing, unless you're looking for seriously weirdo results in terms of synchronization, phasing, etc.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

unless you're looking for seriously weirdo results in terms of synchronization, phasing, etc

that's precisely what I'm looking for!

that said, the day I buy THREE copies of the same Shania album is the day I give up all hope of rehabilitation.

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

and how are the three mixes being marketed? presumably the plan is to take over the world by the power of pop, which is wholly admirable, but in that case where's the reggae version? and the bhangra one? ah c'mon, she's only done half a job...UK garage mix? Bring it on!

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The red and green are sold together for the price of a single in the U.S. and the red and blue similarly outside north america.

the blue (world) disc has bhangra touches as well as a few reggae as well as a bit of EVERY world signifier ever.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The blue version of the first single is TERRIFIC! Bhangra/country-pop/panpipes!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

urgh , I missed this! Could anyone re-post these versions?

baaderonixx, Friday, 11 April 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

can't help you with the brown versions... BUT! years ago i did this with the red and blue versions of "Up!", and here are the eight resulting tracks:
