Ekkehard Ehlers Plays John Cassavettes

Look, I've had a love affair with both of these tracks for months now, but while I was listening to them again today they both kinda looked at me funny, cock-eyed like, and suddenly I just *knew*.

Seriously, I couldn't feel more strongly about music right now.

six months pass...
his 3 betreib records are some of my fave microhouse ever

i wonder how much plays was hampered by its concept. ehlers tlaked a lot about "referencing" over sampling but i didnt feel the tracks were especially evocative of their muses either... but then would i have bothered if it was called "composition xp9dhjdj"?

that said morningstar plays cassavetes would go something like some monotone guy going "look at me look at me blah blah blah as i crush life with my tyranny"

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

my fave off plays was the second fitche i think? with the hesitant guitar

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

haha pulse x = musical mob plays cassavetes

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, you stole AMP's thunder. It was ready to roll on Plays Cassavettes this morning then I found that other thread..... why did it suddenly come up last week? Oh yes, the new album came in?

nick.K (nick.K), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

uh? i dunno. the new betreib single came out last week, noticed it was unmentioned on ilm, found this thread. the end

plays cassavetes is like a year old dude, i wouldnt call it your thunder if i was you

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

put some spizzazzz picks up instead! much better

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, cassavettes has been a fav since last september but I never felt right about uploading it till I was prompted by new material. What I meant was that suddenly wasn't an original idea anymore.

nick.K (nick.K), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
this remix of red hot chilli peppers 'californication' then, on the fortune faded cd2 single, any good?

candour floss (mwah), Monday, 20 September 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

alternatively: lil vicious 'freaks' s/d

candour floss (mwah), Monday, 20 September 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

did 'plays red hot chili peppers' ever come out? i recall going so far as to go to Tower to look at import RHCP singles, but could never find it. there is some new collab. with John Frusciante on the new Staubgold sampler though, but this might be different?

jean jeudi, Monday, 20 September 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it's listed on amazon and such, i havent tried looking yet myself tho. mark p has heard it i believe

candour floss (mwah), Monday, 20 September 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I love "plays" so much. Mark, tell me yr sharing this!

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard the Chili Peppers remix & it was disappointing. I dunno, sounded like typical cut-n-paste looping, but I only got to listen to it once.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh what an embarrassing thread

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 20 September 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

oh stop it now

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

well just the first post really

i have an mp3 labelled 'ehlers plays californication' somewhere but i've no clue if its real. it's nothing i couldn't do with soundforge and some reverb plugins to be honest

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

adam, if you get this hit me with it, please.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

classic.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I am listening to this again now becuse of this thread revival, and I think Mark's first post is totally justified.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

re. Californicaton - A puzzlingly conventional reworking. I've not heard the original though. (thanks adam) Has anyone else heard "Endless House" by Ekkehard Ehlers and Sebastien Meissner? i thnk its my favourite thing by him.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 24 September 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Grisaisse 1" is the track on the Staubgold sampler, TEMPO TECHNIK TEAMWORK. It's a lot of vacuum-cleaner-type whooshing back and forth, with some pings in the pipes, occasionally. Like you're stuck in a leaky tunnel with a neatfreak squatter, and John's sadly plucked guitar.

Don, Saturday, 25 September 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, it's also "previously unreleased."

Don, Saturday, 25 September 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
what other good stuff of Ekkehard's would you have me listen to?

does that make you want to touch yourself? (nordicskilla), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

"Endless House" as mentioned above.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

mmmm classic!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

still an incredible track though.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

does part 2 of "...cassavetes" differ at all from part one?

i can YSI the incredible Ekkehard Ehlers and Sebastien Meissner track "Endless House" if anyone wants to hear it. i think it's the most incredible thing he ever did.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, part 2 is fantastic as well. totally different loop, but i remember it being just as strong.

(and yes please to the ysi!)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

in that case i have a mistagged .mp3. the parts 1 and 2 i have seem identical.

YSI on the way.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

I can send Part 2 if you would like.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

i would love that, thanks.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

I still love these tracks but I must be honest...I have no idea who Ekkehard (nice name) is.

xp - okay, I'll do it tonight!

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

I am going to bed folx!! can I get a gmail?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

i didn't realise the strings on "..cassavetes" were from the beatles until tonight.

jed_, Saturday, 22 November 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

Are you serious!?

From where, specifically?

Their time's limited, hard rocks, too (mehlt), Saturday, 22 November 2008 00:56 (seventeen years ago)

It's a loop of a section from the intro to "Goodnight", very obvious in fact, not processed or anything. I would love to know what he does with it, exactly. One of the really fascinating things about that track is that you can't tell for sure if it's changing at all through most of it.

Mark, Saturday, 22 November 2008 01:12 (seventeen years ago)

Well I've never really known much anything about the Beatles so. .

Downloaded and am listening to Endless house after upthread recommendation. Lovely.

Their time's limited, hard rocks, too (mehlt), Saturday, 22 November 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

It's too pretty to be heartbreaking, and nowhere near the level of emotional poignancy of Cassavetes, but damn, I've be much more than content to listen to Endless House pretty much on repeat. I could listen to stuff like this all my life (and it serves as a nice break from the endless house I've been listening to, otherwise ;). Thanks for the tip!

the "heroin" album with stephan mathieu is really nice too.. i think one of the tracks samples sigur ros but i could be wrong.

winston, Sunday, 23 November 2008 06:33 (seventeen years ago)

discovered this track thru the new dj /rupture thing... its awesome

s1ocki, Sunday, 23 November 2008 06:57 (seventeen years ago)

the beatles thing sort of crushes my dream of using it as soundtrack music tho :(

s1ocki, Sunday, 23 November 2008 06:58 (seventeen years ago)

nine years pass...

Loving the whole 'Plays' compilation despite not recognising any of the references. Glorious.

Ctrl+Alt+Del in Poughkeepsie (fionnland), Sunday, 30 September 2018 15:39 (seven years ago)

Cornelius Cardew's The Great Learning is very much worth hearing! (Eno is one of the voices on the original recording, IIRC, though I doubt you could make him out in the mass.)

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Sunday, 30 September 2018 16:20 (seven years ago)

Ta, will look into it.

For clarity I was familiar with Ayler & Cassavetes & Johnson themselves, just can't hear it in the music.

Cardnew & Fichte are blindspots though.

Ctrl+Alt+Del in Poughkeepsie (fionnland), Sunday, 30 September 2018 16:58 (seven years ago)

I, er, Spotified "Goodnight" and "...Cassavetes 2" back to back two days ago, killing time at my mother's house. She was out of the room for some ten minutes but was then all "Is it still going? Wait, did The White Album have a locked groove as well?"

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 1 October 2018 09:21 (seven years ago)

what happened to him?

FRE SHA VAC ADO (jed_), Monday, 1 October 2018 09:50 (seven years ago)

He's recording under the name Ferdinand Fehlers now, see this ep from 2017

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 1 October 2018 12:16 (seven years ago)

oh great, thanks LBI.

FRE SHA VAC ADO (jed_), Monday, 1 October 2018 14:57 (seven years ago)

That Ferdinand Fehlers ep seems to be from 2005, according to discogs (and spotify). It is gorgeous but very much Farben-like from around that time. I love Farben from that period so I'm not complaining.

FRE SHA VAC ADO (jed_), Monday, 1 October 2018 22:45 (seven years ago)

My mistake! I've only stumbled across the ep doing a similar 'where is he now' search earlier this year. I guess that question now remains unanswered.

The Farben stuff is lovely, I agree.
