let us pass the dutche on this issue

Well, I think Pass the Dutche was the only decent song made by children ever. I'm surprised it even happened what with the obvious drugs references and all. That's te only song I know by them though.

Surely you're forgetting Jordy.

Nicole, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh my god! You just gave me some horrible flashbacks! Don't do that again! How in the heck did some singing french kid make it into the uk charts?

Dog LAtin, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Children are evil, nuff said.

Ally, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Jordy is surely high on the list of subjects FT's received most e- mails about. Along with Wheatus and requests for artful dodger lyrics.

Tom, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Evil maybe, but these particular children got punished enough, I think: one dead, one in jail, none rich, none able to make anything of their brief flash of whatever. There *are* sadder, more drearily inevitable stories in Pop's Rich Fabric, but this one is kinda no-fun enuff all on its own.

Doesn't help that I HATED the pleasedness with which People Who Knew celebrated "Getting One Over on the Authorities" so much with this fairly feeble novelty hit (it's like the Rebel Posture the spliff-caffs in Amsterdam throw: bogus and yukky): so of course — as I often do — I now feel guilty about my former Righteous Dislike.

I fnd my self more annoyed with TV kids like Webster, Silver Spoons, Mary Kate and AShley, the kid from "Voyagers" , Jennifer from Family Ties, etc. . Musically, I am sad about Lil Bow wow becasue I dont htink kids are ready for tha t lifestyle. They shoudl be in school, or playing hooky. I get sad when I listen to teh Jackson 5 an dthen I realise I am feeling romantic empathy with a 6 year old. It feel gross.

Mike Hanley, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Webster was not a kid when he starred in his little sitCOM (com in caps for obvious reasons). He was 32. He's always been 32.

aren't all of musical youth in prison? i saw a two cd collection of musical youth's greatest hits and i was tempted, but i didn't.

Who was the little kid that sang that song "Freaks" a few years ago (1994 or so)? Some 12 year old rapping about getting blowjobs and shit. Famous rap producer produced the song (name escapes me now). They used to play it all the time on Hot-97.

It's spelt 'Dutchie', btw...

Well, none of them (Musical Youth) are in prison. Patrick Waite sadly enough died from heart problems when awaiting his court case. He did end up a small time criminal, but no one's imprisoned now. Dennis and Michael are doing fine and the other two have some psychological problems.

"Heartbreaker" is good, too!

One of their dads was in the Techniques = wau!

I have their very first single.

No, not "dutchie"

It looks like their music teacher wrote a song, sung it, and taught the kids how to play it on the guitars/drums/bass/keyboard, as part of a school project.

It's not terribly good, but it's quite sad in that they were probably dead chuffed to have made it at the time. It's on some indie label, I forget which right now.

Then, a year later, "Pass the", and getting signed to MCA records, etc...

Here we go:

Generals/Political
1981
021 Records; OTO 6

A: Generals (unknown) Prod.: Toney Owens
AA: Political (unknown) Prod.: Toney Owens
This was the first Musical Youth single to be released and has Freddie Waite (sr.) on vocals. The double A-sided single was recorded at Saltley Music Workshop, where the boys would practice many times and the proceeds of the single would go to the workshop.
Value: €10

Ten Euros! How about that!

And some more.. It seems it was Freddie Waite who was in the Techniques...
