I was fourteen when I brought this record home in `81. My step-father saw it and furrowed his brow as if to represent the veritable depth of confusion and dissapointment. Ridicule may be nothing to be scared of, but it was still tough to defend it.

A girl actually broke up with me after she stumbled upon this handsome sleeve whilst thumbing through my record collection (she had a bit of a hang-up when it came to blasphemy.) In retrospect, I should probably send a 'thank you' letter to Tom Warrior.

Wife expressed her poor opinion of:

which i find to be not only not objectionable but completely great. Homage to:

The cover of Pop by Tones on Tail earned my mother's disdain after she browsed my collection in high school. My mother also found The Power of Pussy by Bongwater to be distasteful. Thank goodness I graduated from high school before I bought Unrest's Animal Park 7" (which mercifully had stickers covering the naughty bits, placed on the plastic sleeve by the music store).

In case you weren't aware, Irish Catholic mothers don't approve of this kind of thing.

Dad really liked the artwork on 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' and 'Reign in Blood', Mom didn't mind 'Country Life' ("nothing I haven't seen in fashion mags"), but 'Highway to Hell' really bothered them - I suspect because the picture radiated so much snottiness, attitood, whatever, and as such 'attitood' was graphically straightforward enough to be emulated (unlike the usual HM fantasy nonsense - Dad on 'Number of the Beast', "This is what schoolkids draw on their notebooks, right?") I think they really feared it in a "Oh my god the kid wants to emulate these fucking animals" - yet another great reason to have bought it when I was 10!

The cover of Ozzy's live album, SPEAK OF THE DEVIL (featuing his Ozzness sporting fangs and dripping what looks like strawberry preserves out of his mouth) was not warmly received by my mother....nor was the music contained therein, but alas.....

I remember back in high school running into a girl from my class I secretly had a massive crush on right after I inexplicably bought this album.....

Spotting the record store bag, she insisted on seeing what album I'd just purchased. I remember practically cramping to an acute angle with abject embarassment as she spied the cover, raised her eyebrows and did her best to laugh derisively. This was the painful beginning of my slow awareness that, "gee, Heavy Metal may not be the coolest way to go after all!"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 4 January 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

whoops, that should be "did her best NOT to laugh derisively," which is to say, her best wasn't quite good enough. To have seen/heard her reaction, you'd think I'd just been caught with a stack of porn mags and a box of kleenex.

one ex-g/f actually found this one to be pretty funny (in a disgusting way, she was quick to point out):

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc500/c508/c50894s6ic0.jpg

interestingly enough, though, this one didn't go over so well:

These are also a tad tasteless:

(too bad I don't actually have the Belphegor one in my collection, as the reissue has a different cover). But considering that most people browsing my CDs will know I'm a metalhead, I actually think that they'd find this one very offensive:

I had to hide my copy of Big Black's "Songs About Fucking" from my parents. Also the cover of Nirvana's "In Utero" freaked out my dad a bit.

ITV CHART SHOW FACT! - While everyone knows that the "London" Suede cover art above is actually an airbrushed photo of two women kissing, not so many know that one of the women is in a wheelchair.

how could i have forgotten sex & drugs & jesus christ? i had it, too, though it was when i was an undergrad and i made damn sure that my parents (strict catholics) never saw it. which turned out to not be such a problem after all, because the music thereon sucked & on that basis i got rid of it not long after buying it.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 4 January 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

So... we only have one album cover that has been nixed by the moderator?

Nobody mentioned

Plastikman's LSD-blotter perforated album cover yet? It got at least one guy arrested on drugcharges. :))

What's funny is that these same two album covers what have gotten "ew, what is THIS?" responses from more than one lady were "gifts" from my son's momma (aka I stole 'em from her)...these are two of her favorite albums!
