most implausible tape-cassette pairing

ok you young uns won't remember this, with yr fancy modern playstations and modems and bumbags and such, but back in the day when you taped any LP you borrowed off a friend, it wz kind of sensible to find a similar-type LP to tape on the other side

only sometimes this wasn't possible: like I just found Charlie Haden's The Golden Number (feat. don cherry, archie shepp, hampton hawes and ornette coleman) backed with Theatre of Hate's Westworld...

anyway, Extant Grey PanthXors (my guess is this cassette was recorded 18 or 19 yrs ago), can you top that?

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 4 January 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s, we did this before. Check the archives before you post, dude.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 4 January 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 4 January 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Side A: Cocteau Twins Blue Bell Knoll
Side B: Megadeth Peace Sells But Whose Buying

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 4 January 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(here's the old one, back in the lost times when rockist scientist was still deraymi!!)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 4 January 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

a tape a friend made for me in high school
side a: Marquee Moon
side b: The Low End Theory
probably my most-listened-to tape of all time.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 4 January 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

a cassette taped just 3-4 years ago:

A/ Gram Parsons,G.P.
B/ Underground Resistance, Revolution for Change (most of it -and taped from vinyl too)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

leonard nimoy - music to watch space girls by
the shaggs - the shaggs debut.

disorienting fun.

doom-e, Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a speciality area for me, as my reasoning is a little different from what Mark suggests. Here are some:
'Atlantis' by X-103 (techno) and 'Rhythm, Country & Blues' (silly team ups).
'Sugarhill - The 12" Remixes' and 'Love Ritual' by Al Green.
'Twenty Gospel Greats' and 'Tical' by Method Man.
'Soul Murder' by Barry Adamson and 'Spotlight On Sly And The Family Stone'.
Beach Boys - 'Pet Sounds' and 'Thokazile' by Mahlathini. Mahlathini's 'The Lion Roars' is backed by Sly And The Family Stone's 'Greatest Hits. Sly's obviously the star of this: 'Stand!' is backed with Public Enemy's 'Yo! Bum Rush The Show'.
'Moon Safari' by Air and 'Ulumille Olunegwele' by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
'The Best Mixes From The Album "Debut"' by Bjork and 'Heartattack and Vine' by Tom Waits.
'Stupid Stupid Stupid' by Black Grape and 'Brilliant Corners' by Thelonious Monk.
Booker T & the MGs - 'The Booker T Set' and 'Inside The Torn Apart' by Napalm Death.
'Fun House' by the Stooges and 'Two Bad Superstars' by Gregory Isaacs and Dennis Brown. The Stooges' 'Rubber Legs' is backed by George Strait's 'One Step At A Time'. A friend put nine versions of TV Eye on the flip of Clarence Carter's 'Testifyin'' for me. (Iggy rivals Sly: as it happens, the two favourite acts of one of my best friends.)
'The Hidden Camera' by Photek and James Brown's 'Think'.
'The New York Dolls' and Burning Spear's 'Hail H.I.M.' (a favourite tape). Also 808 State's '808:90' and the Dolls' 'Too Much Too Soon'.
Cameo's 'Real Men...Wear Black' and Woody Guthrie's 'Dus Bowl Ballads'. Also Cameo's 'Machismo' and Miles Davis's 'Tutu'.
'The History of the JAMMS' and 'American recordings' by Johnny Cash.
Ofra Haza's 'Yemenite Songs' and Nick Cave's 'Henry's Dream'.
Jimmy Cliff's 'Save Our Planet Earth' and Frankie Knuckles' 'Beyond The Mix'.
'Surfin' With Bo Diddley' and Directional Force's 'Peel Sessions'.
Billie Holiday's 'Billie's Blues' and Culture's 'Baldhead Bridge'.
Dead Kennedys' 'Plastic Surgery Disasters' and 'Juxtapose' by Tricky, DJ Muggs and Grease.
Bob Dylan - 'Nashville Skyline' and Lee Perry - 'Reggae Greats'. Also Bob's 'The Times They Are A-Changing' with Ladysmith Black Mambazo's 'Inala'.
Alec Empire's 'Les Etoiles des Filles Mortes' and Hound Dog Taylor and the House Rockers' 'Beware Of the Dog'.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's 'Mighty Khan' and the Faces 'A Nod Is As Good As A Wink...To A Blind Horse'.
Aretha's 'This Girl's In Love With You' and DJ Krush's 'Holomix'.
Macka B - 'Peace Cup' and Frank Sinatra's 'Strangers In The Night'.
The KLF's 'Chill Out' and a Sweet comp.
Art Tatum's 'The Tatum Group Masterpieces' and Lard's 'Pure Chewing Satisfaction'.
Clyde McPhatter's 'Deep Sea Ball' and the Only Ones' 'Baby's Got A Gun'.
Louis Prima 'Live From Las Vegas' and Lee Perry's 'Hold Of Death'.
Gene Pitney's 'Backstage' and PIL's 'That What Is Not'.
Small Faces' 'Greatest Hits' and 'We Are Shampoo'.
Frank Sinatra's 'Songs For Young Lovers' and Neil Young's 'Life'.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ha, might have posted a list as "topsy-turvy" as Martin's -- IF i hadn't given away almost all of my 300-plus cassettes as presents to friends who are half my age, just before Xmas
:-)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 4 January 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I still have around 2000 cassettes, so finding odd pairings wasn't hard.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 4 January 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin -- that's why i gave up mine, see! being scared shitless by the unfathomable perspective of four-digits
;-)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 4 January 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

happy coincidence - just finished one:

The Locust the Locust vs This Heat This Heat
And actually:on listening:it:really works quite nicely (post-scripted[?] randomly with aaliyah 'Are you that somebody' crazy shiznit).

_gi88y_, Saturday, 4 January 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Al, that sounds like one of the best tapes ever made in recording history. Lucky!

_gi88y_, Saturday, 4 January 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

A Ozzy Osbourne - Tribute (selections)
B Built to Spill - There's Nothing Wrong With Love

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 4 January 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

um, I do still tape cassettes but I put the same rec on both sides since I find that trying to pair up albs is a headache waiting to happen.

The only time someone taped something for me was a guy in college who put together a stone roses comp.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 4 January 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

martin what is yr reasoning? or shd we be able to work it out?

happy nu-year julio: u r bonkahs

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 4 January 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, that's why I told you to put more Ut instead of just one Ut rec + something else.

I got hold of 'Lick my decals off' LP (you said you lost this). I can tape it for you (on both sides, of course).

happy nu-year to you too.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 4 January 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

but do you mean a. side one on side one and side two on side two?

or b. sides one AND two on side one, then both all over again on side two?

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 4 January 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the 'something else'= not another band.

I wanted say 'griller' and then whatever is left to be filled with other Ut tracks (yr favourites for instance). nothing to be recorded 'over again'.

I will tape only 'Lick my decals off' say becuz there's nothing I could put on the other side that would go with it, not because I'm lazy.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 4 January 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

my colleague taped the 1st stone roses alb+ other tracks (b-sides etc) that he liked with the space that was left.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 4 January 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It's less reasoning than a lack of reasoning. I do deliberately pair up similar things pretty often (as I said, that's a small selection of my C90s), but I am keen on variety. I am happy to put two things I really like together even if they are very different because then with a small number of cassettes (like taking with me when I go away) I get more variety. Another factor is impatience with having half-used tapes around, so I won't wait too long for a similar album.

In some moods, I find it hard to understand why I would wish to have similar things on both sides.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 4 January 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Locust the Locust vs This Heat This Heat
Now that would get some quality time in my casette deck/walkman
A Big Black-Atomizer
B Human League-Dare

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 4 January 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

A: The Smiths-Hatful of hollow
B: Guns n' Roses-Lies

Michael Bourke, Saturday, 4 January 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

A: Husker Du-Candy Apple Grey
B: Pigface-Fook

Michael Bourke, Saturday, 4 January 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

My mind drifts back to 1987.
Side 1: Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Oz (taped off of radio, station i.d.'s included)
Side 2: David Sylvian - Alchemy-An Index of Possibilities (taped from a friend's cassette, excessive tape hiss included)

bahtology, Sunday, 5 January 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

manic street preachers "generation terrorists" backed with underground lovers self-titled lp

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 5 January 2003 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I chucked out all ny cassettes the last time I moved house as they breached the DR. C '2 formats only' rule. I only have CDs and vinyl now.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 5 January 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

if i chucked all mine out in one go hackney wd make like a fliptop bin i think

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 5 January 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

bathology -- thats's a very yummy coupling you got there! the radio i.d.'s & tape-to-tape ingredient look especialy delicious, honestly

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 5 January 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

''I do deliberately pair up similar things pretty often (as I said, that's a small selection of my C90s), but I am keen on variety.''

so am I but if things don't go together then its difficult to listen to things again and again.

I used to tape things off the rec library. so I'd borrow two recs and tape one on each side. I hardly listen to them now since these pairings don't go well together. the worse one I can think off is:

side A- Pixies: doolittle
side B- Patti smith: horses

I really don't like horses now.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 5 January 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

side A: Hardcore Holocaust (compilation of Napalm Death-type bands)
side B: 808 State - Newbuild

For some reason this one actually made sense at the time but I can't remember why.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a lot of a) boys with guitars b) boys with guitars in this thread. I'm just saying.

Which I neatly sidestep with my current listening: The Breeders - Title TK vs Mouse on Mars - Iaora Tahiti.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I like both sides of this one:

'X-102 Discovers The Rings of Saturn'/'Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd' - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 6 January 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

not implausible, but very nice:

a + part of b: Kronos Quartet - Pieces of Africa
rest of b: Joy Division - 1st Peel Session e.p.

[slowly fading violin + percussion....and in comes the screeching guitar starting off "Exercise One"]

willem (willem), Monday, 6 January 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...
side 1: Remy Zero self-titled first album
side 2: The Fall This Nations Saving Grace

Destroy A. Monsters (Destroy A. Monsters), Thursday, 25 January 2007 03:52 (eighteen years ago)

A: Denis Leary, "No Cure for Cancer"
B: Sex Pistols, "Never Mind the Bollocks"

richard wood johnson (rwj), Thursday, 25 January 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

i had a tape in my car in high school where one side was the first two pearls before swine LPs and the other side was an assortment of hardcore and noize 7"s.

be home by 11 (orion), Thursday, 25 January 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

A: U2, Under A Blood Red Sky
B: Barbra Streisand, The Broadway Album

I had my best friend at the time - circa early '86 - tape all his U2 albums for me, and his Mom was a huge fan of Babs. Since I was, too (being a nascent fag), I asked for her then-chart-topper as well. And to think he didn't know I'm gay for another 2+ years!

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

Roxy Music: Street Life: 20 Greatest Hits / Morecambe & Wise 1: Bring Me Sunshine

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

Side A: Kick by INXS
Side B: Cloud 9 by George Harrison

Side A: Symphony of Destruction by Megadeth
Side B: Copper Blue by Sugar

Also, how many of you used to cut thirty seconds off of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" - since it ended abruptly anyway - just so you could fit the entirety of Abbey Road onto one side of a cassette?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

"Licensed to Ill" and "Graceland."

A Radio Picture (Rrrickey), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

I've usually been pretty good at picking complementary albums, with the downside that I have an annoying number of one-sided tapes awaiting b-side soulmates.

hence, the most jarring pairing is probably:

a) sly and the family stone - there's a riot goin' on
b) the pixies - surfer rosa/come on pilgrim

or maybe

a) big black - pigpile
b) aphex twin - come to daddy

although both flow quite well.

m the g (mister the guanoman), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

Big Black - "Songs About Fucking"
Beck - "Odelay"

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

b)Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock - It Takes Two

ianinportland (ianinportland), Friday, 26 January 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

Fields Of The Nephilim - "Dawnrazor"
Marc Almond - "Mother Fist & Her Five Daughters"

onimo (onimo), Friday, 26 January 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

In the 80's I once bought a cassette of Lou Reed "Rock and Roll Animal" at my local record store. When I got home and played it, the music on the tape turned out to be Hank Williams.

Maltodextrin (Maltodextrin), Friday, 26 January 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

One time long ago I went on a roadtrip and the only person who had the presence of mind to bring any music was my friend's older brother, and on one side was Hatful of Hollow by The Smiths and on the other was 90125 by Yes (with the last song cut off). It was just about the worst thing I'd ever heard until maybe the 100th go-round (thanks, auto-reverse!), and suddenly it became the best thing I'd ever heard.

Petroski (petroski), Friday, 26 January 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)
