Here's what I know: He's Japanese, he's an actor, and he's been a musician for decades. Supposedly folk-influenced, perhaps bordering on a new/different strain of enka? On the other hand, he also knows and (I believe) plays with Keiji Haino. Anyone here ever heard him? C or D?

quite a short entry in'Japanese Independent Music' (Sonore, 2001) mentions: "underground music veteran"... "music often sad and gloomy"... "lyrics sometimes surrealistic"... "collaborations w/ Keiji Haino which led to the trio Vajra" ...and there's a looooongish discography listed, from 1971 onward

one year passes...
i just saw him live

the songs were forceful and exciting, but i got the feeling i was missing a lot by not understanding the words

he really was an exciting performer

but the songs started to blend together, as i said forceful--but also seemingly kind of formless

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

he did some exciting and unusual things with his voice too--guttural screams and growls

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

jeez I'm jealous man. hopefully him and kazuki tomokowa will come to london someday.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

he spoke to the audience at length a few times--in japanese

!!

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

see now I'm REALLY jealous ;)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

do you speak japanese?

i only know what i've picked up from ozu movies, hence if i tried to speak japanese i'd sound like a mildly drunk, resigned middle aged man from the 1950s

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

no I was just joking.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

rizzx, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't this at that new place in Dalston?

Matt #2, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

The mysterious Cafe Oto, yeah. It suddenly seems like every gig I'm checking out is there.

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

rizzx.... was he solo?

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

yeah solo, all he needs is his voice and some strings really. intense

Looking over the interview in wire (and some of the translated lyrics), looks like September can't come soon enough!

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 22 May 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

Got my tickets booked.

One of my most anticipated events of the year at the moment.

krakow, Friday, 23 May 2008 08:45 (seventeen years ago)

I went for a 3 day pass, if only for the flexibility. Wonder who the guests will be...

gnarly sceptre, Friday, 23 May 2008 10:11 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

They've announced the Thursday and Friday guests, I AM A KAMURA and TAIGEN KAWABE respectively, but nothing for the Saturday yet. I can't say I've heard of either of these, but they both sound interesting.

Try to turn up tonight. anyone seeing him? Lol Coxhill support!

Doesn't say that its sold out but it doesn't have a phone number to check so I'll assume it isn't...

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 13 September 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

and has anyone seen him these past two days...

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 13 September 2008 10:44 (seventeen years ago)

I had a three day pass, but didn't make it to a single show due to a basic lack of life skills. How was it?

krakow, Sunday, 18 October 2009 22:59 (sixteen years ago)

three years pass...

Mikami has been a total joy this weekend! I don't know about "sad and gloomy" as he is always such fun to watch, a really exciting and active performer and always seems to be having a great time himself.
