Just recently bought their cd which in my opinion rocks, so what's your opinion of this band?

Absolute classic!

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 6 January 2003 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Why does everyone want to bring back NY 80's Heroin Chic post punk??

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 6 January 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

brg30, have you even heard the Out Hud album and/or singles? Much less retro than they may appear.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 6 January 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes I've heard them and seen them live. Not my thing. I rather listen to early new order/U2/ Rough Trade singles

Anyone go their New Year's Eve show?

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 6 January 2003 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The album is one of my faves of 2002 -- the production is a real treat, and the compositions are great, too, very skillful builds and releases of tension, unexpected directions taken. I'd like to catch them live if they ever tour around here.

Also, is their earlier 7' on GSL worth buying?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Monday, 6 January 2003 07:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Most definitely worth buying, "Hominid Hump" being one of the best songs in their catalog.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 6 January 2003 08:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud. Third-rate ESG mixed with condescending attitude. I think I've covered this before...

hstencil, Monday, 6 January 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

can someone do a search & dEstroy on this pleez?

_gi88y_, Monday, 6 January 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

hstencil, not at all condescending. I dunno where you get that idea from, other than the fact that they like an area of the city that you don't.

Anyway, the album is good, but it has a sense of detachment that turns me off at times. A bit too pristine on the production side...

I got that idea from their obnoxiously condescending "we like to dance" stage banter when they opened for Sun City Girls, pal. I've commented on it enough here already, but if you wanna read about it again, let's just say I don't find it all that great to be "told" when to and when not to dance. If their music was worth dancing to, I would've. Simple as that.

And just because I make fun of people I see on the L train with goofy haircuts doesn't mean I "don't like" an "area of the city." What the fuck? I mean, I'd make fun of people with goofy haircuts in any part of this city...

...which reminds me, I saw a woman on the N this morning whose hair was a real mess. Girlfriend, get your hair did.

hstencil, Monday, 6 January 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, having not been at the SCG show, I can't comment on how they acted, but I have a feeling that what you are reading as condescension was simply genuine enthusiasm (I'm guessing it was Nic (the bassist) who was saying this).

I'm hardly their biggest fan, I just find the way you go about justifying your dislike for them (which is totally understandable) confusing.

I can't remember who said it, but I think in general they have a lot to learn about "tact" (not to mention "stage presence" and whatnot - I mean someone like Alan Bishop can get away with crazy shit because as a performer he holds the audience by the proverbial sack, unlike Outhud). Ya know, people will dance to music if they want to, you don't have to be a jerk about it.

What's confusing? The main thing is I don't like their music. It sounds like warmed-over ESG with a few techno signifiers (to quote Chaos A.D. "snare rush, snare rush...") thrown in for good measure. It's not really exciting to me, although I guess maybe it's indicative of some greater "indie meets dance" thing, I dunno. The attitude/condescenion stuff is just icing on the cake, I guess. I mean, the attitude probably would not bug me so much if their music was something I thought was special, but the music's not, and so it does.

hstencil, Monday, 6 January 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I generally like this album, except for the "pretty" guitar parts. Yeah, I guess what Yancey said about pristine production. The guitar parts make it too wussy for me. I'm all man.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Weird, I just realized that they could have possibly snagged their name from this weird section of Echo and the Bunnymen's "Thorn of Crowns" (from _Ocean Rain_) -- I swear it sounds like they're chanting "Out..... Hud..... Out..... Hud....."!

Clarke B., Saturday, 18 January 2003 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
They split up!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 13 July 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

They announced at their September 6, 2005 show in NYC that they were breaking up and that would be their last show. Thank god we have Pitchfork to confirm things 9 months later.
