My big list.

I have taken, over the last month or so, to keeping a big list of records I wish to buy/hear/steal/download/look at winsomely, because I finally became fed up of walking into record shops and forgetting what I wanted to buy. So now every time I hear mention of an interesting band, it's straight to allmusic.com and check them out and add something to the list if it sounds good. I am now on something like 120. However, some of these absolutely must be toss - can you good people please help me cull the chaff from the wheat so I can happily buy them with impunity...?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Tom.

And thanks in advance to anyone else who offers forth.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

stevo (stevo), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweetheart Of Rodeo, Tom!! Blimey.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a grebt album, C! Why the surprise? I thought my Byrds love was well known (that whole Byrds-Bob-Band triangle is far and away the highpoint of 60s rock for me).

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

there are no real stinkers on that list (some stuff that i'm not interested in but im sure is ok), and some really good albums

as far as the autechre goes, get LP5 before the other 2, its a great album, really nice, i dont like amber much, and while tri repetae isnt bad, LP5 is the real deal...

gareth (gareth), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, your local Virgin Records was knocking out Searching For The Young Soul Rebels for £3 a week ago, and most likely still is. It's a tremendous record.

I'm assuming that Augustus Pablo LP is a starter, and it wouldn't be my choice as a first one: I'd probably go for King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown, or Original Rockers. Classic Rockers goes a bit later and so I suppose gives a better overview but it has more weak bits than those two.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"The orb’s adventures beyond the ultraworld – the orb"

I bought this today. It is indeed very good.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't call of any of them Chaff (except the New Order discs you've chosen would not be my first picks) - but essential for repeated listening:
Armed forces – elvis Costello
Future days – can
Superfly – curtis Mayfield
Here, my dear – marvin gaye
Chairs missing – wire
Flip your wig – husker du
Sister – sonic youth
Let it be - the replacements
Wolf songs for lambs - jonathan fire*eater

..the outsider being jonathan fire*eater... TOTALLY worth the $2 you'll pay for it in the cutout bin...

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 6 January 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

My opinions of the ones I've actually got, fwiw....

Indispensible:
The shape of jazz to come – ornette coleman
Pink flag – wire

Exceptional:

Dub gone crazy – king tubby
Raw power – the stooges
Substance – new order

Bloody good:
3yrs etcetera – arrested development
Innervisions (remastered) – stevie wonder
Remain in light – talking heads
Imperial bedroom – elvis Costello
This year’s model – elvis Costello
Future days – can
Superfly – curtis Mayfield
Sunshine hit me – the bees
Chairs missing – wire
A gift for you at Christmas – phil spector
Starsailor – tim buckley

Good, but not great:
Armed forces – elvis Costello
Get happy! – elvis Costello
Searching for the young soul rebels – dexys midnight runners
Emperor tomato ketchup – stereolab
Turn on the bright lights – Interpol
The revolution will not be televised – gil-scott heron
Electric warrior – t rex
Homogenic – bjork
New wave – the auters
Technique – new order
Goodbye and hello – tim buckley
Remedy – basement jaxx
Zen arcade – husker du
New day rising – husker du
Flip your wig – husker du
New day rising – husker du
Skylarking – xtc
Daydream nation – sonic youth
Sister – sonic youth
No protection – massive attack vs mad proffessor
Let it be - the replacements
Phaedra – tangerine dream

Decidedly average:
Tribute to jack Johnson (remastered [when it comes out])– miles davis (I'm sorry, I love Miles dearly, but I've never understod what all the fuss was about with this one)
Rubycon – tangerine dream

Worth considering as alternatives first:
Anthology – David Axelrod (cherry-picks the best from Songs of innocence, Songs of experience + Earth Rot);
At The Close Of A Century - Stevie Wonder (includes most - all but 1 track I think - of Innervisions + all the best of the rest of his material);
Beauty Is A Rare Thing - Ornette Coleman (includes the whole of The Shape Of Jazz To Come + Change Of The Century, This Is Our Music, Free Jazz and 5 other albums);
Back To Mono - Phil Spector (includes A Gift For You At Christmas).

Yes, I am a great big sucker for boxsets!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 6 January 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

You must hear:

Remain in light – talking heads
Armed forces – elvis Costello
Pink flag – wire
Chairs missing – wire
Substance – new order
Zen arcade – husker du

Skip the individual Pet Shop Boys albums you've got listed and go for Discography first.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 6 January 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Some mighty fine records there.

For me, these are absolutely essential:
Searching for the young soul rebels – dexys midnight runners (one of my favourite records)
Curtis – curtis Mayfield
Innervisions (remastered) – stevie wonder
Remain in light – talking heads
Future days – can
Sunflower / surf’s up – the beach boys
Raw power – the stooges
Hounds of love – kate bush
Substance – new order (unless you go for the Retro box set)
Sweetheart of the rodeo – the byrds
The notorious byrd brothers – the byrds
Starsailor – tim buckley
The orb’s adventures beyond the ultraworld – the orb
Zen arcade – husker du
Daydream nation – sonic youth

And these are pretty damn good:
Ocean rain – echo and the bunnymen
Imperial bedroom – elvis Costello
This year’s model – elvis Costello
Armed forces – elvis Costello
Get happy! – elvis Costello
Superfly – curtis Mayfield
Here, my dear – marvin gaye
Playing with fire – spacemen 3
The revolution will not be televised – gil-scott heron
Electric warrior – t rex
A gift for you at Christmas – phil spector
The sensual world – kate bush
Actually – pet shop boys
Technique – new order
U.f.orb – the orb
Chill out – klf
Black moses – Isaac hayes
Infected – the the
New day rising – husker du
Flip your wig – husker du
Sister – sonic youth
Queen of soul – aretha franklin
Let it be - the replacements
Tim - the replacements
Pleased to meet me - the replacements
Turn turn turn – the byrds (though I'd only buy this if you've already got the other 2 on your list and Mr Tambourine Man, 5D and Younger than Yesterday).

Goodbye and hello – tim buckley is worth getting, but I much prefer 'Happy Sad' from around the same time.

The following albums would also be on my list of stuff I aim to buy eventually:
Tribute to jack Johnson (remastered [when it comes out])– miles davis
Trouble man – marvin gaye
Motion – cinematic orchestra (I really like 'Everyday')
The shape of jazz to come – ornette coleman
Pink flag – wire
A little deeper – ms dynamite
Expansions – Lonnie liston smith
The slider – t rex
Homogenic – bjork
Isaac hayes movement – Isaac hayes
Shaft – Isaac hayes
No protection – massive attack vs mad proffessor
Echo dek – primal scream

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 6 January 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a list too! Not as many records as that and the only common one is Wire's Pink Flag.

Won't commetn on whether things are good or bad but just a couple of general points which are so obvious you might want to punch me.

Only by one album by a band you haven't heard before at a time, best or chronologically first first (not cheapest).

NERD have two albums called 'In Search Of', I've got the elsctronic version which came first and it's very good although not great. There's also a more recent version with live musicians (multi tracked presumably).

Do you need all that dub? It's great but you might run out of room in yr head for all the subtle variations before you get everything on yr list. If you've not got Burning Spears's Garvey's Ghost (comes on one CD with Marcus Garvey album ) get that first. Judging by all the electronic, dub and jazz on your list I can't reccomend enough Drum & Bass Strip to the Bone by Sly & Rob & Howie B - one of my favorite albums ever, often overlooked and not Drum and Bass at all (Sly & Robbie are a Drummer and a bassist (or a bassist & Drummer) and it's a pun, d'you get it?)

mei (mei), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Under no circumstances should you skip individual PSB albums. Besides, _Discography_ came out before _Very_, so none of those singles are on it.

Both the PSB albums you've listed are essential, but _Alternative_ is the best thing they've ever put out by a good long ways.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm on a BIG dub tip at the moment, inspired by A.R. Kane and Linton Kwesi Johnson. I'll probably get bored soon...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sly & Robbie are a Drummer and a bassist (or a bassist & Drummer)"

You were right the first time

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Phaedra – tangerine dream
Tri repetae – autechre

...are so wonderful I can't even begin to describe it.

Lunatic harness – mu-ziq
Cold house – hood
Emperor tomato ketchup – stereolab
3yrs etcetera – arrested development
Amber – autechre

...are very good as well.

Homogenic – bjork
Tango n’vectif – mu-ziq
Lp5 – autechre
The orb’s adventures beyond the ultraworld – the orb
U.f.orb – the orb
Orblivion – the orb
Music for airports – brian eno
Chill out – klf
El-p – fantastic damage
Stratosfear – tangerine dream
Rubycon – tangerine dream

...are OBAR, overrated beyond all recognition. Empty, mediocre, 'interesting'.

Jan, Monday, 6 January 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

_Homogenic_ would be overrated if it didn't have "Bachelorette" on it. The comparative ennui inherent in the rest of the disc is more than overcome by that monster.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I've recently come to accept that I'm just not going to own every record ever, and have started picking up a few greatest hits style stuff.
I'm not sure how I feel, part of me says that this way I can get a sampling of many people instead of everything by a few.

Horace Mann, Monday, 6 January 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely: Remain In Light, Starsailor.
interpol worth getting, so is daydream nation. sister, n*e*r*d*, el-p all probably worth getting.

as far as the autechre goes, get LP5 before the other 2, its a great album, really nice, i dont like amber much, and while tri repetae isnt bad, LP5 is the real deal...

Yeah, I agree. And since I got LP5 first, it made me think the others were worth having. (they aren't really, save a track here and there)

And I would probably hit Dr. Dre - The Chronic, Wire - Chairs Missing, and Talking Heads - Remain In Light before anything else on the list. I mean, the Chronic is pretty hit-or-miss, but for some reason, all the good tracks are sequenced so that they appear on the first half so it's not like there's much skipping around to do.

original bgm, Monday, 6 January 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Get these first:

The shape of jazz to come – ornette coleman
Future days – can
Daydream nation – sonic youth

Then:

Dub gone crazy – king tubby
Sister – sonic youth
Liquid swords - genius/gza
Emperor tomato ketchup – stereolab

And maybe:

U.f.orb – the orb

o. nate (onate), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe that anyone doesnt like the first Orb album. Dudes they invented microhouse!!!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now I'm all about recommending Sunshine hit me – the bees and Emperor tomato ketchup – stereolab because they both make me indescribably happy.

I'd stick with getting just the one copy of Axelrod's Songs Of Innocence tho.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 6 January 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It's really important that you go buy Remain in Light as soon as possible.

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 6 January 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Here, My Dear!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

What, no Britney?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm jealous, i don't want to buy any records anymore :`(

charlie's advice re: axelrod seconded. i got a bunch of them all at once and most are pretty crap.

if you get black moses, make sure you get the lp with the cool fold out sleeve

ron (ron), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

These are all really good:

Ocean rain – echo and the bunnymen
Playing with fire – spacemen 3
Perfect prescription – spacemen 3
Electric warrior – t rex
Hounds of love – kate bush
Lunatic harness – mu-ziq
Daydream nation – sonic youth
Sister – sonic youth

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I third the LP5 suggestion, though in my autechre experience there's a vast range of what people like in their corpus. A way of nutshelling autechre is that up to and including Tri Repetae (which US version comes with a compilation of two indispensible EPs) is melodic, and everything after that moves towards broaching the noise/music barrier.

Dirty Three are very good.

I don't like dub, but when I listened to it, the Massive Attack/Mad Prof album seemed pretty engaging.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the fact that everyone has recommended different things. That means you have to buy them all, Nick.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just thinking that, James...

I need a better paid job.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

though in my autechre experience there's a vast range of what people like in their corpus.

Definitely, although I've yet to meet a person that thinks Inacunabula is their best. Anyway, my fav full length is Amber, closely followed by, predictably, Tri Repetae. But the EPs 1995-1997 are the real gems: Anti, Basscad, Cichlisuite, Envane, Anvil Vapre, Garbage.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The following are all essential:
This year’s model – elvis Costello
Armed forces – elvis Costello
Searching for the young soul rebels – dexys midnight runners
Pink flag – wire
Electric warrior – t rex
The slider – t rex
Raw power – the stooges
Music for airports – brian eno
Zen arcade – husker du
New day rising – husker du
Criminal mind – boogie down productions
Sister – sonic youth
Phaedra – tangerine dream
Rubycon – tangerine dream

Beer Can (Beer Can), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

although I've yet to meet a person that thinks Inacunabula is their best.

Nice to meet you then, Siegbran. It's almost always been two of their albums that I've held above the rest, and Incunabula has always been in one of these slots (the other occupied alternately by Tri Repetae, LP5 and currently, Chiastic Slide). From "Eggshell" on through "444", it hits every note perfectly for me.

And completely OTM on the EPs, with the exception of Basscadet, the completist's delight (or would that be Cavity Job?). Anti, Garbage and Cichli Suite are the ones to get first.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

And just to show you how wide-ranging autechre fans are, Amber and Tri Repetae are my least favorites now.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I have so far bought...

Phaedra - Tangerine Dream
Ironman - Ghostface Killah
Angel Dust - Faith No More
Searching For The Young Soul Rebels - Dexys
Sunflower/Surf's Up - Beach Boys
No Protection - Massive Attack

And later today I plan on adding three from...

Liquid Swords - Genius/Gza
Tical - Method Man
Echo Dek - Primal Scream
U.F.Orb - The Orb
The Notorious Byrd Brothers - The Byrds
Sweetheart Of The Rodeo - The Byrds
Hounds Of Love - Kate Bush
Innervisions - Stevie Wonder
Honey's Dead - J&MC
3yrs etcetera - Arrested Development

God bless the 3 for £21 section in Solo music!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 13 January 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

good luck finding T.Buckley's "Starsailor". both the cd and the record go for upwards of 50-80$ on ebay

JasonD (JasonD), Monday, 13 January 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

dood, if u HAVE to choose from that:
-Hounds of love
-Honey's dead
-Echo Dek

tho there's far better stuff in yr initial list, eg. Technique, any Sonic Youth lp, Remain in Light (tho if u don't have it yet, i suggest you start with Fear of Music), ...

Fabrice Terrac (Fabfunk), Monday, 13 January 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The ickle list is just compiled from what's on 3 for £21, which includes Fear Of Music as well actually. Remain in Light was there, but it vanished.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 13 January 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

From the mini list I'd pick Notorious Byrd Bros, Hounds of Love & Innervisions.

If you're getting Sweetheart of the Rodeo make sure it's the one with the extra tracks. Come to think of it, Notorious Byrd Bros also has extra tracks on the latest reissue but I don't have that version myself.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 13 January 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

make sure you pick up the £20 box for the wire albums

re autechre: i'm an ep7 man myself

zemko (bob), Monday, 13 January 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually got (due to availability and time)
