I've never even HEARD the Tindersticks, and I'll choose them.

Shun Pavement.

Pavement are better. I only have "Simple Pleasure" by Tindersticks, though, and I've been told that perhaps it's not their finest hour. It's pleasant late-night fare, but Pavement are endlessly playable. I'm a real sucker for their sound. The quirky meandering songs, the whimsical wordplay, the laid-back drawling vocals: Ah Bliss! We really don't have enough threads about them... ;-)

Simple Pleasure is OK, Tindersticks (eponymous - their first outing) is a must have. Definitely goes down in my book as one of the all time greats. Still prefer Pavement though. The riffs, the lyrics - unbeatable! Wowee Zowee is best.

Ya know, I used to really like Pavement, and played their records all the time, but never do at all now. Tindersticks on the other hand I like and I *do* play their records. I saw both bands in the '90s, too, and Tindersticks were better.
