Phases

What do you think are the typical 'phases' in a person's history of listening? I ask because somebody said in another thread "Right now I like anything which sounds like late Talk Talk" and I thought wow, I used to be like that (not that I wouldnt like it now but I wouldnt look out for it). Be as broad or specific as you like, and attach phases to ages heh heh.

If it helps, it was me who said that and I'm 23! I just got out of my jazz phase. But that's to do with where I work. I'm also listening to The Dismemberment Plan and early Orbital load lately too...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and lots of dub too.

Specifically, the development of this phase went like this;

1. "Bloody hell, Talk Talk have cropped up again, Fuck it, I'll buy some..."
2. "Bloody hell, A.R. Kane have cropped up again, Fuck it, I'll buy some..."
3. "Ooooh, this has made me listen to Metal Box again, I need some real dub..."
4. "Must get Bark Psychosis, must get Bark Psychosis..."

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes the "getting into dub" phase - v familiar!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

If you could just kindly right a list of what comes next in the listening curve then that'd save me a lot of trouble, Tom! ;o)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Are we talking about some kind of straw-man's "phases of listening", or our own personal ones? Because I'd imagine that everyone's are different.

Two that seem to crop up time and time again are the "I renounce guitar music, I'm just not interested in it any more" phase and the "getting back into guitar music" phase. They tend to be from 6 months to a year apart, and usually around the age of 20.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd have thought they'd all be different, Matt, but Tom seems to know the path I'm taking at the moment. Either that or I'm assuming his identity... MWAHAHAHAH!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to worry Nick I never had the getting into dub (man) phase!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

You will once Southall has assumed your life, moved into your house and married your girlfriend leaving you roaming the streets destitute and sleeping on the floor of an androgynous prostitute like Dan Ackroyd in Trading Places.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 6 January 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Dub WILL be followed with world music of some description in a few years (Fela Kuti and ethiopiques comps in my case) but this won't seem like a bad thing.

There's the failed attempt to get into classical phase to be dreaded too. Seems to me you get it as a kid or not at all.

The final phase is listening to the sound of your life support machine go bing.

tigerclawskank, Monday, 6 January 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I never knew Dan Ackroyd was an androgynous prostitute.

tigerclawskank, Monday, 6 January 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Classical music? Jesus, I got Amadeus on DVD for Christmas...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Never really had any major diverting phases, like getting into dub...it's always been metal, rock, pop for me.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm currently going through the 'getting back into hardcore' stage after a year of listening only to hip hop sparked by finding an old master p album on the flip side of a mix tape someone made for me. unfortunately i can't get a refund for my Fubu tracksuit.

_gi**y_, Monday, 6 January 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

been wandering childlike+wide-eyed through the 10yrs+ of the UK ardkore-jungle-2step continuum or whatevah.

haha "getting into dub" phase in NZ = listening to the pop charts!

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 08:12 (twenty-three years ago)

From singing ovaries to triphop to downtempo to IDM to postrock to riot grrrl to punk to psych/dronerock/generally noisy rock (at present).

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 08:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I often find it depends on the place I'm in / the people I meet. I'm easily lead.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I went through a dub phase, inspired by the digi-dub of The Orb, Dreadzone, and a million crusty/ambient combos in the early nineties. The closest I've got to world music is seeing a few bands at Glastonbury however.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i've yet to have a proper dub phase, despite buying the Trojan CD set recently and always liking The Orb and co, and any echo chamber effects in ANY track...i'm not sure i could like real raw dub - i just want to hear the best things about dub in other music (and that goes for many other such characteristically specific genres)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

When I was little, I liked everything with synthesizers (Moroder, Vangelis, Jarre). There was a long rock phase during puberty, until I listened to 'Aenima' - I haven't been able to find a better or equal rock album ever since. So I'm into electronic music again. Right now an electroacoustic/post-industrial phase is dawning

It's not typical though. Most people I know are still in their rock phase and intend to stay there. And why shouldn't they.

jot eff pe, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got too many phases all at once that I just get confused. Right now i'm getting into some kind of weird classical-pop-reggae-qawwali-jazz-fusion-space-metal-French-Japanese-Brazilian-80s-twee-trip-hip-hop of some sort, Its hard to find one CD that fits my phase so I often buy many at once.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

mine have a lot to do with the seasons and the ebb & flow of payday . I vascilate mostly between Party Music when it's sunny and i'm rich and Melancholy Selfpiteous stuff when it's cold and i'm poor.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Ten years ago: "Mmm, postshoegaze."

Now: "Mmm, postshoegaze."

A continuing trend or a circling through?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:05 (twenty-three years ago)

An expression of undying love.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

reading this thread, I see I have clearly lived my life all wrong (or at least in the wrong order)

Jeff W, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't been able to find a better or equal rock album ever since.

I just wanted to see that sentence again.
