Great unreleased songs

I don't think this has been done ...

Songs that have been played live quite a bit, but never released....

...and by "never released" that excludes anything that is current .. like, if Creed is playing their new song live, but haven't released their new album yet - who fucking cares?

Examples I can think of:
"Sea of Madness" - Neil Young
.."Campaigner" almost qualifies, as it was only released on "Decade" ...

There are probably a ton of Morphine songs, Grateful Dead, Pearl Jam, etc ...

Soul Coughing - "Amy Fisher"

... looking for examples of songs that (most)every fan knows, but can't buy ....

alex chilton - "tennis bum"

he denies ever writing it, playing it, etc. despite it appearing on a (now reasonably available) bootleg.

Another great unreleased Soul Coughing song is called "The Bug". It's one of my favorite of their songs, really.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 6 January 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Radiohead - "Big Ideas (aka Nude)", "Lift", "I Promise"

The band has played around with these songs along with True Love Waits (which finally came out on the Live EP last year (though I'd prefer a studio version)) since 1995. Though some are still popping up in live sets, I'm beginning to doubt whether they'll ever get an official release.

"The Bug" was on the Batman soundtrack, do rarities such as these count? The best non-album SC track is "Murder of Lawyers"

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 6 January 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Radiohead - "Street Spirit (Fade Out) (Paul Oakenfold remix)"
UNKLE - "Intro (Optional)"
Osymyso - "Intro Inspection"
The Avalanches - Gimix
Negativland - U2
John Oswald - Plunderphonics
DJ Z-Trip and DJ P - Uneasy Listening Volume One

and everything on THE BEST BOOTLEGS IN THE WORLD... EVER!!

Oh, and of course, the Ween Pizza Hut jingle. "Bitch, where the muthafuckin' cheese at?!"

Evan (Evan), Monday, 6 January 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I may be the only person who cares about this, but VPN had some amazing songs they played at virtually every show about 10 years ago and never released--"Wave," "Success Story," etc. And God Is My Co-Pilot used to bring the house down with their medley of Moonshake's "Two Trains" and "Girly Loop," but never released it.

the third Lapse lp.
the sin eaters (even although some of their songs have been redone by Ted Leo solo).
Rodan stuff they recorded on their peel session but never for a record
the screamers...

Primal scream's "the orchard"

late 90's melbourne band Burnside's entire set (criminal that this was never released)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Cocksucker Blues," of course.

Dave225: Is Soul Coughing's "Amy Fisher" sung from the perspective of Mary Jo Buttafuoco? If yes, that song was released as "I'm Livin' on Baby Food" on a promo-only 7" around the time that Ruby Vroom came out.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince "In All My Dreams" , " Purple Music", "Moonbeam Levels"...

uh - a whole lot of songs by him

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

oops. Didn't see that they needed to be played out live, too. Scratch those Prince choices...

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sea of Madness" is on the Woodstock soundtrack, does that count? The Screamers stuff has been released, though Tommy Gear is not too happy about it.

Zolar X!

Eels' cover of "Damn! Wish I Was Your Lover", which actually sounds like the most Eels-like song ever when they do it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeff Buckley's cover of Cocteau Twins's "Ivo." Cos he's spot on Liz Fraser!

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Bobby D is the boy for this thread shurely? Some of the outtakes from the 'Blonde On Blonde', 'Highway' and 'Blood on the Tracks' sessions, half of 'Infidels' that got pulled (I'm thinking 'Foot of Pride' and 'Blind Willie McTell' of which, admittedly, versions are available on the official 'Rare...' Bootleg Series) , the well bootlegged 'Basement Tapes', plus many of the man's rocking live randoms and covers - 'Man of Constant Sorrow' for starters.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Etcetera by The Beatles.

two months pass...
Bruce Springsteen - original studio version of "The Promise".

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Saturday, 22 March 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

MC5 - "Black To Comn". It's on a couple of dodgy live albums, but never officially released.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Saturday, 22 March 2003 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

David Sylvian & Robert Fripp - The First Day
David Sylvian & Robert Fripp - The Blinding Light Of Heaven

Alright, they have been released, but only on a live album and studio recordings of these songs do not exist, I thought that would count.

Tijn, Saturday, 22 March 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Cop Shoot Cop's cover of "Loose" by the Stooges. (I have a bootleg version of it, taped at Stache's in Columbus, Ohio)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 March 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
The studio version of Sylvian & Fripp's The Blinding Light Of Heaven was released in 2000 on an ep with Sylvian's compilation Everything And Nothing

Elliott Smith - Division Day

Suzy Creemcheese (SuzyCreemcheese), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

xpost -- i've never heard "the obedient atom"--can someone hook me up with an mp3?

tylerw, Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

likewise, ysi or please email it to dan at acuterecords please mike!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

"Division Day" was a single--I think it's still even in print.

Belle & Sebastian had a song called, I think, "A Ray of Sunshine"--that was a prominent line in the chorus, anyway--that was on an early bootleg tape somebody made for me in like 1997, and I've never heard it even referred to anywhere else. It's just Stuart Murdoch & his guitar.

I'd also add a bunch of the early Girly Sound/Liz Phair songs, like "Open Season" and "Don't Hold Yr Breath" (sometimes bootlegged as "If I Ever Pay You Back").
