Used to have it on a compilation tape and never knew who it was by (thought it was King Missile at one point). Long bass-driven track with a strange spoken voiceover story about Uncle Bob dreaming about being Uncle Bob...

Other lines I can remember:

Something about eating something and 'that became part of Uncle Bob'
Something abput waking up and going to work and stuff...

The story goes round in circles in quite a surreal way. Fantastic. Love to know who it was... There was some Tortoise, King Missile and Massive Attack on the tape as well to give you some idea of the mood...

If so it's on this compilation described here

Serie Noire: Dark Pop + New Beat
(Eskimo)

With early 80s underground dance music unquestionably the key source of inspiration for today’s fast growing alternative new electro scene, Belgium compilation outfit Eskimo have chosen wisely on this, their latest and best yet mix CD.

Featuring a fantastic selection of underground gems from the pre-house club scenes of the early 80s, Serie Noire is a hugely listenable collection of funky, brooding, melodic dance music including John Carpenter’s cult movie soundtrack Assault on Precinct 13 and Vicious Pink’s 8:15 To Nowhere (Vicious Pink being the erstwhile backing singers on Soft Cell’s Sex Dwarf). Also adding quality are New Order frontman Bernard Summer, whose production of Section 25’s Looking From A Hilltop mixes machines with scary synths) and Sting, providing the lyrics to Will Power’s Adventure In Success life lesson.

Prog rock heroes The Alan Parsons Project also make an unexpected though welcome appearance, delivering a pure disco, electro groover (an instrumental of Mammagamma), paving the way for A Split Second’s original Ibiza anthem, Flesh which became a hit in 1987 after Balearic DJs started playing it at 33 instead of 45.

Serie Noire: Dark Pop + New Beat is a fine collection of superbly chosen underground disco records that’s both contemporary and easy on the ears. Release date is December 16.

Unliely to be Kissing the Pink as it was a Deep American Male Voice telling the story... Any other suggestions? Someone a bit arty and weird, probably 90's US alternative?

Failing that anyone got an idea where else might be good to ask this question?
