I have not come across nearly as many gay women as men. Why are they less visible, or are there just fewer of them?

their smart haircuts and comfortable shoes help them blend into society

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I meant to post this to ILE, but maybe in some way, I didn't.

Lesbians are really visible around here.

Did you see that episode of Real World: Chicago where the bi girl gets into a huge fight with a bunch of dykes and the cops pull up? That's around the corner from here.

"dislike U"

That's around the corner from here.

Wicker Park, so much to answer for.

If it was after a certain time of night on North Avenue, it could've been a fight with female "professionals."

hstencil, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 04:53 (twenty-three years ago)

No, no, it was in Andersonville, by Augie's. (Yes, North Ave. near the river, a very professionalized area.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 06:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was Andersenville. .. Sweedish & all..

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Andersenville - also known as "Lesbianville".

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Sweedish lesbians ... I guess I'd expect a more creative name for the neighborhood....

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it's Andersonville. And it's Swedish (one "e"). Most of the Swedes have moved anyhow.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

sweet Swedish = Sweedish

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

You can still get some mad Swedish food or go to a Lutheran service in Swedish there, though.

hstencil, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but when my mom grew up here, she was one of the few Jewish kids--most everyone else was Swedish (she has some funny stories about this). There are probably more Lebanese and Iranians living here than Swedes at the moment. Persian ice cream vs. Swedish cinnamon rolls FITE?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

(FITE would of course have to include invisible lesbians.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Pastries from A Taste of Heaven (owned by a gay man) on Foster west of Ashland would come in and stomp all contenders, sorry.

hstencil, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

If I ever became a rock star, I'd have to surround myself with a bodyguard posse of bull dykes and stomp Eminem's blond twink ass.

maria b (maria b), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Andie's restaurant rocks. I had xmas dinner there. Kan Zaman is also good. There are a shitload of good restaurants there.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the transition from pastries at A Taste of Heaven to the image of bull dykes stomping Eminem. Maybe they could stage the event at A Taste of Heaven?

Kerry: did you have dinner at Andie's before or after they went all chi-chi? (NB: they were and are great)

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

stage the event at A Taste of Heaven?

Naw, it's too small. I mean, I've seen a couple bull dykes in there, but a posse?

hstencil, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it would be like bull dykes in a chi--

No.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I did used to eat at Andie's before the facelift. I take people there now and tell them that it used to be a diner and they can't believe it.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
the ILM Search Engine certainly does turn up some odd threads.

and, as a related point, i'm reminded of the anecdote in the Azzerad book about Big Black at the Touch & Go house in Detroit, watching on the roof at the end of the night when the lesbian and the redneck bars would let out, and the lesbians would beat up all the rednecks.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Why are they less visible, or are there just fewer of them?
The statistic I keep hearing is 10% of Men are gay|bi and 4% of women are les|bi. So (if the stat is accurate) they are a bit rarer than gay dudes.
