ELP vs El P

Because they are so easy to mix up.
(You can throw ELO in the mix too but I wouldn't as their name involves different letters).

When El-P needs three huge personalised white trucks to transport his gear around then I'll respect him.

Pete you must be bored if you're starting ILM threads.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Who did the stabbing-knives-int-keyboards thing? Was that them (ELP)? If it was, they'd win in a fite.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

El-P has not to my knowledge scored any "hilarious" musicals for Jim Davidson.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Who the fuck are El-P? And do they stab Hammond organs with knives? (And can we eat them?)

kate, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm very tempted to start a BÖC vs BoC thread now

zebedee, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue Oyster Cult vs Boards of Canada, perchance?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No no, BOC = Back Off Cupids.

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

bäck öff cüpїds vs. böärds öf cänädä?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yah--too many umlauts! Makes me think of Grötüs...

(and how do you get one of those N-umlauts like Spinal Tap have)?

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

But yeah, back to the question at hand: I wonder if El-P is capable of a Tarkus-like rap opera...

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

How do I do an umlaut at all, please?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

get an azerty keyboard. Doesn't work for n tho'

ä ë ï ö ü ¨n

see?

Jeff W, Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't this same thread title posted, like, 2 weeks ago?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I only realised that these were two different people the other day, and was a bit bemused at how well Emerson Lake & Palmer were doing in critics polls.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

El-P sardonically namedrops Emerson, Lake and Palmer in "Deadlight" off the Urban Renewal compilation so I'm pretty sure he's well aware of the "wacky mixups" and so forth.

(yes of course I show up in this thread!)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the other thread was EL-B vs El-P

OCP (OCP), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard El-P for the first time last night, Deep Space 9MM, I thought he was a bloody awful rapper.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 9 January 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

So that makes the count as following:

ILM regulars who loathe El-P: 137
ILM regulars who like El-P: 1

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 9 January 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Hehe not to worry Nate my opinion could have been tainted from the outset by all the ILM hate, I did try to give it a chance though. In the interview I was imagining ILM reactions to what he said "Def Jux for me is when experimental music and the street became one". 500 posts later etc etc.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 9 January 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Well half the time his flow sounds like an MC in the midst of battling, caring less about traditional meter than getting as many barbs in as possible in the alloted time limit. (I really want to hear him mashed up with a less-busy hip-hop instrumental to hear how that style holds up against the Neptunes or Premier.) It's is an acquired taste; I first heard him on Funcrusher Plus when his style was a bit more orderly so I guess it was easier for me to get used to.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 9 January 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, hate to spoil your ongoing pariah status, but El-P is a great MC, just not necessarily a great rapper. I reckon his style is way more orderly these days. I can't bear to hear the pseudy stylings of Funcrusher Plus, he's like the Michael Stipe of rap - so, so meaningless.

Don't think El-P would fit with Premier's boom-bap or the Neptunes' metronomic flutter, although there was a track he did with High & Mighty (with fairly trad Mighty Mi production) that was ill, his verse is like a letter to a porno mag.

Would be interested to know of any other El-P rhyming over non-El-Productions.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I was assuming El P was Elvis Presley. I am so old.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 10 January 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

nate, you are not alome. I heard Fantastic Damage really late, but I like it a lot and it is one of my fav albums of last year. i didnt vote in the ilx poll though, did you?

"so then there were two" ;)

Vic (Vic), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i have fantastic damage and was pretty impressed the first couple of listens. haven't been back to it in months though. this may be my fault or it may be el-p's, i just don't know.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatevah, I think El-Producto's shit is HYPE! And another thing he does which pleases me, which is my quarrel with so many MCs/rappers, is that his lyrics aren't inane retarded self-aggrandizing BS.

I'd like to see him stabbing synthesizers with knives, though, that would RAWQ!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"nate, you are not alome"

yeah. proud of this one

Vic (Vic), Friday, 10 January 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)
