My original post was a cop out, because when I was in college, I specifically remember reading about this. Unfortunately, I can't remember what the reasons were (one was for entertainment, and I believe another was to promote the values of society -- perhaps one was to protest?) - or who wrote them (could have been any number of music theorists we studied). Anyway, please carry on.
