"Pumps And A Bump" is the GREBTEST SONG EVER

It's sad because it's true! MC Hammer tries to go gangsta and ends up sounding like Kris Kross! And the tuneless 2-Live-Crew-inspired boy-girl chanting that sounds like they recorded all of the record company's interns during their cigarette breaks and made them record it over and over until they words become meaningless! And the unnecessary vocoder bit at the end!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The video is funny, too: Hammer's assistant wakes him up and reminds him that today is the big day for the Pumps & Bump party. Hammer gives the assistant his address book, and the assistant arranges for charter buses for all the attendees. Meanwhile, Hammer gets decked out in his thong and prepares for the festivities. In the end, though, it was all a dream. Honestly, it makes the song all that more absurd...and it's pretty absurd to begin with.

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!! The only part of the video I remember seeing is Hammer dressed all thug style doing a neo-pop-and-lock routine that was just RIDICULOUS. Hearing about the rest of it makes me so HAPPY!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I still make the handsign for '2 Legit to Quit'.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

gist of video = what a great penis hammer has.

maria b (maria b), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

That isn't enough?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 January 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

2 Legit 2 Quit is the best song in the history of mankind.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 9 January 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Being Ironic is STIL FUNY

seriously!

Tom Millar (Millar), Thursday, 9 January 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing is, though, the song is made up of horrifgying component after horrifying component and yet Ifind myself LOVING it. I always have, even for those five seconds when it was out as a single back in '93.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, then in that case, we suffer together.

Tom Millar (Millar), Thursday, 9 January 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

2 Legit 2 Quit is the best song in the history of mankind.

Isn't that the one where it looked like he had purchased the world and just wanted to burn it for kicks?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 January 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not irony, it's truth. Hammer is a genius and one day the world will admit this. The 2 Legit handsign/dance is so great, it'll never fail to be brilliant.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 9 January 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a difference between sarcasm and irony, btw. At any rate, I agree with Ally. True dat.

maria b (maria b), Thursday, 9 January 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Any song whose chorus can easily be signed-out on one hand = CLASSIC AS CLASSIC GETS.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 9 January 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought he had kind of a small penis.

Winslow (winslow), Thursday, 9 January 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

FACT = A MAN WITH THE NAME HAMMER DOES NOT HAVE A SMALL PENIS

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 9 January 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I asked a friend of mine if he's had gone off his heavy college days drug use.

He just gave me the sign. He's cool.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 9 January 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't all the Super Athlete Guest Stars in the 2L2Q vid undergone unfortunate circumstances -- Jose Canseco's downward career spiral, Kirby Puckett's marital strife, Deion Sanders' falling off, Chris Mullin's... er, yeah.

I just read literally seconds ago that this was #17 on Blender's worst songs ever. I like it though.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Was Tupac involved in the making of this song somehow? I caught a few minutes of the made-for-VH1 movie about Hammer's rise and fall and they showed him in the studio mixing this song with a guy that looked nothing like, but was supposed to be, Tupac. Then they played basketball.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the first date of the '2 Legit' tour. There were breaks of about five minutes between each song to allow for costume changes. People were walking out in droves. (Everyone seemed more excited about seeing Boyz II Men, anyway.) The true beginning of the end.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

*openers Boyz II Men*

Wow. That's quite a hammer indeed. (no homophones)

The Reverend, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

dan actually is right about this song -- it's pretty great (even though it shouldn't be given all of the ridiculous sub-components [like the pointless vocoder vocals at the end]).

Eisbaer, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

classic! they used to play this on the box constantly.

Also, turning on the colour via remote at the beginning of the video is entirely ace. And yes, the man packs in a lot of junk.

mehlt, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 03:02 (seventeen years ago)

what is going on @ 2:30?!?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)

what you watching the censored version for?

phil-two, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 07:04 (seventeen years ago)

Dang, I have to admit, that really is the grebtest song ever.

Chelvis, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

six months pass...

the censored version is almost as smutty as the first uncensored version -- between hammer practically slobbering all over the shoes at the beginning and then the pussy poppin' dance moves @ 2:30. it's like the director of the video thought, "you know, as long as they're fully clothed they can get away with ANYTHING."

Mad Vigorish (Eisbaer), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

"Every one of these pair of pumps got a face with a baby boy"

I wonder if this song was big among foot fetishists?

mehlt, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

Oh and ??? to the "everyone of these pair of pumps got a face with a baby boy" quote from the beginning of the video. Which just makes it more weird.

I prefer the turning on the colour intro of the uncensored version.

I CAN'T TAKE THE RONG!!! (The Reverend), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 01:24 (sixteen years ago)

It's such horrible irony that this is the point I remember when people were like "Oh Hammer you've lost it" when in reality it is a kickass song and he should not be doing sad gold4cash commercials that make me cry.

Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

Agreed with OP, this is a great song.

Hammer totally has some sort of serious mother/foot issues he needs to resolve.

The song, though. Still great.
