Come on, admit it! What bands do people think you like but you are afraid to tell them you despise because you don't want to seem uncool?

My Bloody Valentine.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a snarky response but I realised I can't think of any currently cool bands who I really don't like! :(

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'm kidding; I actually don't care what people think about the music I listen to. Part of this is because I've grown up, but I actually credit ILM for some too. People proudly claiming to like all kinds of chart pop, etc., has encouraged me to shed the last shred of worry about seeming cool I had. I think I listen to cool music anyway.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Not quite what you were after, but: I HATE the fact people assume that just because I am vaguely "indie" in appearance I must listen to Travis, Coldplay and their similarly beige ilk. Urg.

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I am sick of fuckwits telling me I have no sense of fun because I don't like Andrew WK.

I like how this is turned into a thread not about what people like, and into one about what people don't like.

It's the ILM way!

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oy, bit o' the old grammar might help here. I meant:

I like how this was supposed to be a thread about what you secretly like, but has turned into a thread about what people publicly DON'T like.

That's more like it.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I am sick of fuckwits telling me I have no sense of fun because I don't like Andrew WK.

And oddly enough, it wasn't me who posted this!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

oh never mind I've got this all wrong - I wish I could delete these posts...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The question was asked confusingly, anyway. It's about what you *pretend* to like to seem cool. I think.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

music made by friends?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely, you lay into all the hip music you cd possibly hate in order to reach the NEW LEVEL OF COOL previously only occupied by layabout fuckbots wanking over daytime radio in order to maintain the illusion that they're even peddling a decadent shtick, let alone doing it 4 real.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Thursday, 9 January 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Britney.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 9 January 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

publically admitting one detests R&B and hip-hop seems to be social suicide round here

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 9 January 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

is this the same as not knowing anything about quite a few bands i really "ought to know about" (whatever that means), but somehow not mentioning this fact when one of these bands comes up in conversation?

cos i got LOADS of them...

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 9 January 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Yaaaaaaah! I feel lonely since I think I am the only one around these parts who doesn't get the IMPORTANCE of MISSION OF BURMA. Okay, they were around back in the day. Okay, they are not that bad. Buuuuuuuuut.... are they great? IMHO, no. Do they have songs that move me? No, not really. Do I find them particularly clever.... CERTAINLY NOT!
Alright, I'm bracing myself.... flail away!

Recently: I would say I don't like the GIRLS but since I didn't even know they existed until last week, all I can say is that I am ultrauncool with no opinion of them whatsoever!

Bloody Hell, Thursday, 9 January 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't hate SONIC YOUTH. I just don't think they are as talented or as artful as most people seem to think they are. Just because I can't stand the drool of everything on "Sister" past "Schizophrenia" doesn't mean I think "I don't get it." I just don't like it.

TriColor, Thursday, 9 January 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright, I'm bracing myself.... flail away!

You're not alone! I like them, but Chris Barrus, irregular denizen and regular reader, has always thought they were poo.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 January 2003 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Stone Roses, REM & Nirvana

Jez (Jez), Thursday, 9 January 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea what "people" think I like!

But I was just reading the Metal Box thread, and an interesting experiment has just occurred to me. So, ILM: what do you think my opinion of Metal Box is?

Jeff W, Thursday, 9 January 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Hot Chili Peppers. Gots a few albums on tape and have listened to them quite a bit each but really they're my friends' band, not mine. I just don't dig the Peppers but feel I should cos everyone I know does.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Sade
Early Harry Conick Jr
Linda Rondstats' Nelson Riddle Triology

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeff: I think you like the single.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonic Youth.

Callum (Callum), Thursday, 9 January 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, there's too many to name, really. Lots of hip-hop and electronic stuff that most folks go ga-ga over just bore me to tears. So count me with electricsoundsofjim on that one. I dunno, name some bands; i probably won't like 'em.

-Matt, giving danger...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 9 January 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh heh. Matt is here, the curmudgeon factor has just doubled. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 January 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Curmudgeon? You take that back! I'm an agnostic!

-Matt, "or was that an Illuminist?"

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 10 January 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

almost sundar! I like the single and the Peel Session.

Jeff W, Friday, 10 January 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)
