What bands do you listen to in secret? And, it is a secret that you guard dearly because you'd be completely mortified if your cool friends found out you liked them.

Terrific Tom, Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no secrets. I do, however, have the "Xanadu" soundtrack.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

there are no guilty pleasures at ilx because we are far too secure to worry about such things. it is all good.

(there was a time when i knew a few people with whom i was not keen on discussing my love for scritti politti, but now i am an open book.)

dan (dan), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The last thing I downloaded and liked which I thought "Fucking hell, I can't admit I like this on the net" was Moby's "We Are All Made Of Stars". But then I put it in my NYLPM top ten sidebar anyway. If self-censorship still happens it tends to happen before the record gets bought or put on.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope. None left. Once ILX got me to come out of the closet about secretly loving Prog Rock, well, there's nothing shameful left in there. This is one of the things I love about ILM, is that it teaches you never to be ashamed of what you love. There's always someone else who understands.

kate, Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

another aye for "we are all made of stars". i'm ashamed to admit i like that chemistry song by semisonic, also.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

KISS... Judas Priest.... Rush ....Dead Kennedys... Dead or Alive (You Spin Me 'round)... Jets to Brazil... Fat Boy Slim... White Zombie/Rob Zombie (Sorry Al Ministry!) .... Sting... Oasis... Elastica... Wake Up Kids... Rancid... the Offspring... Jane's Addiction... Red Hot Chili Peppers...

Note: Big Noodle is not my usual handle! Please do not do an IP search and expose me! I beg you all... please... let me keep my dirty secrets dirty and secret!

Big Noodle, Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm totally in agreement with Kate's above post.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there's lots of stuff which admitting to liking on ILM will get you argued with or mocked, though - but as Kate says there's always SOMEONE who'll back you up, pretty much.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate,
great attitude to have but it is still a hassle going to a "cool" music store and have to deal with wise-ass clerks who lives their lives like Jack Black in Hi Fidelity. They may not say anything.... sometimes it just their smirks that will drive you to kill. I am afraid to say that I do not have a very thick skin for these types of slights and slurs. For instance... I was in a store to be unnamed in a town that shall also remain unamed and about to buy a boxed set of remastered Led Zeppelin albums. I ended up not buying it because I couldn't bring myself to actually take up to the counter and have my purchase scrutinized by their elitist staff.

Spawn, Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but the question specifies "cool friends" not "cockfarmers in record shops"! :)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Gosh, actually *not buying* an album because you're afraid of the reaction of the staff is awful. Spawn, you gotta have a little self-confidence! Plus, what's to be embarassed about Led Zeppelin anyway?

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 9 January 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

This is why you buy things on-line. That way you need not suffer cruel abuse for your music selection. Or your porn, if you're into that. "Dude, you're buying Anal Quest III? Rim Buds kicks that shit's ass!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Every time I like a record that's on Astralw*rks I'm afraid to talk about it on ILM for fear of sounding unsophisticated about dance music :(

except I was happy to learn that I'm not the only person who thinks Basement Jaxx's Rooty is really pretty GREBT :)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Heavens, John! Were you living with Jaxx haters at one point? How could anyone not like that album, I wonder.

And don't worry about sounding unsophisticated etc. Secretly everyone wishes they knew as much about black metal as you do. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Except Siegbran I spose :-)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You may share the throne. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 January 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

NO MORE SCAT HUMOR NED.

I've publicly championed Insane Clown Posse and today started a thread declaring "Pumps and a Bump" the greatest song ever recorded. Shame don't live here no more.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm... never really heard ICP, but I admit to liking the Kid Rock 'Devil without a Cause' singles I've heard ("Wasting Time", "Cowboy", "Bawitdaba").

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 9 January 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

NO MORE SCAT HUMOR NED.

This isn't so much the pot calling the kettle black as the thing with two heads in an argument.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 January 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm ashamed to admit i like that chemistry song by semisonic, also.

Semisonic are wonderful. "Act Naturally" is like Jonathan Richman fronting Avalon era Roxy Music.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 9 January 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to listen to several bands in secret because I have slagged them off in the past and don't like admitting maybe I was a bit wrong about them... The Vines being one of them..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 9 January 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry, WHAT DID YOU SAY? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 January 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I keep wanting to go download some KMFDM singles. Where's that tape I had of all the good stuff ? Didn't it have some RevCo and Thrill Kill Kult on it ?

daria g, Thursday, 9 January 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Nas.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 9 January 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sterl, post-Puffy Nas isn't embarassing. If you're talking about "Hate Me Now", though, you a brave mofo.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay... I bought a KID ROCK CD! It was on-line while I was living abroad and to tell you the truth not great but I do like the song on it that is a direct rip off of SNOOP DOGGY DOG! Uh-oh... did I admit to another sin... Sorry!

Tristan II, Thursday, 9 January 2003 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen... I'll admit I am not as sophisticated some folks when it comes to music and am a little intimidated when buying music at some of these "cool" music stores. I was in once a long while back... the same one where I did not buy the Zep box. It is a new and used music shop that keeps the goods behind the counter. You bring up the CD insert (in a plastic strip) and one of the clerks gets it for you. This particular instance I was getting the DK's Fresh Fruit. The clerk was like, "Hey, you want to listen to this first?" I said no since I've heard it thousands of times. She then goes,"And you still want it? Hey Fred (another clerk, not her real name) can you get this customer his DEAD KENNEDY for him?" The woman wouldn't even lower herself to get it to sell it to me. Not only that, she announced my "bad taste" in music to the entire store. I'll admit I like the Dks. I don't see anything wrong in liking them. Having said this, I also felt embarrassed being the object of ridicule for liking them.

Spawn, Thursday, 9 January 2003 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Nick and I used to be an Embrace fan. I still kind of like them a little bit, but only a few songs.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 9 January 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the only record i nevah played (or would play) is metal machine musick. i would need to expand on why i like it for an hour after putting it on for two minutes. but other than that, no secrets, though HAH i have been ridiculed for about every band i like (from *nsync to neutral milk hotel).

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 9 January 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, i'm Sean.

This is Ma$e.

_gi**y_, Thursday, 9 January 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

There is nothing left for me to admit to liking on ILM. I am defender of the uncool.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 9 January 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Coldcut - Journeys by DJ ;-)
