Eve vs. J-Lo respectively.

"People think I changed much 'cuz I'm livin' good
Now they get my voicemail, hear them callin' me rude?
Sometimes I feel bad (Most of the time I don't)
'Cuz if I don't protect my shit (Other n***as won't)"

is what Eve sez and everyone knows what J-Lo sez.

Flaunting yr. rocks is authentic but denying them ain't -- the more Eve say what she want she'll grab it the more she gets the more she real, y'know?

The more J say she real, the more we know she's using the real for her to get paid, the more she gets paid the less we care the less she gets paid, y'know?

Eve sez she'll do this thing like it ain't done before, which is like lesson #1 -- know yr. history to deny it while J. Lo keeps invoking the past of her block like it matters. Eve say it ain't where she's from it's where she's going -- BAP mantra, y'all -- the viciousness of success. J-Lo's meanwhile like the Debbs of latino assimilation -- she wants to rise with the immigrant ranks, not from them, except she really does rise from them so she's more like Berger quoting Debbs but the elasticity of assimilation still beckons -- Eve's block is hot and hard and it's her heart. J's is gentrifying, y'heard?

Two races, two models of racial mobility and authenticity, two definitions of identity, two banging beats.

Condoleeza Rice vs. Hilda Solis (& ask why you only know one of the names)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 9 January 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's Condoleeza Rice?

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 9 January 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I really was hoping this was The Rolling Stones versus J.Lo.

I was expecting Britney vs Jennifer. (I now refuse to call her J.Lo.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Both indefensible crap.

I like "Satisfaction"! beat's a bit dull, but the way the melody keeps moving up a notch in the chorus is neat, and i really think Eve's flow is underrated...i don't really think much of most of her records, and this one's really only above par, but i still end up listening most of the time because of the way she flips syllables around.

Sterling, I think you've finally adopted the most annoying way of expressing yourself possible with the way you went on in that question.

I'm real even on Oprah. That's just me. Nothing phony, don't hate on me. What you get is what you see, y'all heard?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 10 January 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

J.Lo would be more "real" if she didn't care so much.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the thing about Eve; she's got great flow but rarely says anything worth paying attention to. She's like the textbook definition of the B+ MC. (B- without grade inflation)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 January 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

My sidestaking on this one is mostly flute-related, although I do think it's a great question Sterling is asking.
