Chris De Burgh Album Covers S/D

While his music may make babies cry and his monobrowed face may make people sick as dogs, you can't deny that this guys album covers from the 80's are amongst the most amusing and stupid things the world has ever seen.

Who could forget Chris playing Chris on an infinite chessboard for "Best Moves", or Chris in a thin suit holding a light shooting phone for "Man on the Line", or the frankly awful white figure running down the beach for "The Getaway"?

Big shouts also go out to that other Chris, Mr. Rea, for his similarly crazed artwork. Check out the cover of "Tennis". In fact check out the song Tennis too, it features the immortal line "There are women and children in boats on the sea, crying and dying like Jews / Do you like Tennis?"

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"There are women and children in boats on the sea, crying and dying like Jews / Do you like Tennis?"

Um... what?

Michael White, Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Gail to thread!

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"There are women and children in boats on the sea, crying and dying like Jews / Do you like Tennis?"

As a tennis player I find this offensive!

Paula G., Thursday, 9 January 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i demand piX0rs!

zebedee, Thursday, 9 January 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Have a look at his official site
http://www.cdeb.com/maindex.html

Shockingly bad. The really funny bit is the Fan Corner where you can meet other Chris De Burgh fans from around the globe. Nepalese DeBurghheads anyone?

And how scary does Captain Eyebrows look here -

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Al I know about him is that he was afraid to cross this body of water
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc800/c842/c84227591x8.jpg

.. that or he was a fuckin' cheapskate...

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris DeBurgh went to school with Nick Drake. Nick hated him.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? That's interesting. My folks have a Chris de Burgh record on vinyl. Like "Best Moves", it has two Chrises on the cover. As if one wasn't bad enough. Didn't he want to help Liverpool defender Marcus Babbel through illness recently, with the aid of his healing crystals? Bizarre!

"There are women and children in boats on the sea, crying and dying like Jews / Do you like Tennis?"

That's the funniest thing I've read in some time! Thank you!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah if I recall from what I read, Nick called him a little man with a big guitar. Of course his name wasn't Chris DeBurgh then.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

From his site....

"Chris de Burgh's career has blossomed, but has yet, not reached its full potential..."

Yup, ok.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris de Burgh's career has blossomed, but has yet, not reached its full potential
.. Meaning: "Chris DeBurgh had a hit once. He's still waiting for a second.."

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 9 January 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The actual song Man on The Line seems to be about a phone stalker (theres a man on the line / and he's wasting my time / he calls me everyday / he just won't go away) until a MASSIVE 80's POP CHORUS comes out of nowhere with the frankly baffling lyric "How many men have seen this heaven / How many burned in flames?". Completely incomprehensible.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 9 January 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

listen lynskey, you incompetent ninny, just because you don't understand it doesn't make it incomprehensible. i'm an uncompromising artist, and i have a complex, fragmented lyrical style. sometimes my muse takes me into bizarre new territories, often within a single song. stick around, you may actually find it a thrilling ride. or maybe you're too cosy in your indie-schmindie universe, and have long since lost the desire to be thrilled and challenged.

chris de burgh (chrissy), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit!

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

are you fuckin shittin me!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 9 January 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

and who are you lot to criticise me and (my close friend) chris rea? any of you sell out the Nynex arena? thought not.

"Do you like Tennis?"

My thoughts exactly!

chris de burgh (chrissy), Thursday, 9 January 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll bet he porked Kelly LeBrock at one point.

maria b (maria b), Thursday, 9 January 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ladyinred.com is a perfume site.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 9 January 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

A joke one I think. But I don't get the joke.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 9 January 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i've always said i'd let my songs do the talking. so here goes...

"This is the way that it was meant to be,
You gotta get ready for the century
I'm a total modern man,
And I got total modern plans
And it's so easy when you say.....

I want it and I want it now!"

i'm scaling new creative heights. what are YOU doing?

Kelly le Brock? if beds could talk, indeed...

chris de burgh (chrissy), Thursday, 9 January 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

apart from This Way Up, I own all the records pictured above. Perhaps it's time for me to leave...

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 9 January 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the idea of Chris de Burgh spending all of his time lurking on ILM just waiting for people to say bad things about him.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 10 January 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the idea of ILM spending all their time on Chris de Burch sites looking for bad things to say!

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 10 January 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

burgh, dammit.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 10 January 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

What's going on through that window on the cover of "At The End Of A Perfect Day"? It looks like Burgh with his shins cut off in the style of Hank Hill's dad, standing on the lower half of a children's slide.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Friday, 10 January 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks everyone I'm laughing so hard I could shit. Ah the De Burgh. I'll post something tommorow about his "best" lyrics. Sorry. . . . I'm laughing so hard .. . . .

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 10 January 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah c'mon, these are class:

There's a Spanish train that runs between
Quadalquivir and old Saville,
And at dead of night the whistle blows,
And people hear she's running still...

And then they hush their children back to sleep,
Lock the doors, upstairs they creep,
For it is said that the souls of the dead
Fill that train ten thousand deep!!

Well a railwayman lay dying with his people by his side,
His family were crying, knelt in prayer before he died,
But above his head just a-waiting for the dead,
Was the Devil with a twinkle in his eye,
"Well God's not around and look what I've found, this one's mine!!"

Just then the Lord himself appeared in a blinding flash of light,
And shouted at the devil, "Get thee hence to endless night!!"
But the Devil just grinned and said "I may have sinned,
But there's no need to push me around,
I got him first so you can do your worst,
He's going underground!!"

"But I think I'll give you one more chance"
Said the Devil with a smile,
"So throw away that stupid lance,
It's really not your style",
"Joker is the name, Poker is the game,
We'll play right here on this bed,
And then we'll bet for the biggest stakes yet,
The souls of the dead!!"

And I said "Look out, Lord, he's going to win,
The sun is down and the night is riding in,
That train is dead on time, many souls are on the line,
Oh Lord, he's going to win!.."

Well the railwayman he cut the cards
and he dealt them each a hand of five
And for the Lord he was praying hard
Or that train he'd have to drive...
Well the Devil he had three aces and a king,
And the Lord, he was running for a straight,
He had the queen and the knave and the nine and ten of spades,
All he needed was the eight...

And then the Lord he called for one more card,
But he drew the diamond eight,
And the Devil said to the son of God,
"I believe you've got it straight,
So deal me one for the time has come
To see who'll be the king of this place,
But as he spoke, from beneath his cloak,
He slipped another ace...

Ten thousand souls was the opening bid,
And it soon went up to fifty-nine,
But the Lord didn't see what the Devil did,
and he said "that suits me fine",
"I'll raise you high to hundred and five,
And forever put an end to your sin",
But the Devil let out a mighty shout, "My hand wins!!"

And I said "Lord, oh Lord, you let him win,
The sun is down and the night is riding in,
That train is dead on time, many souls are on the line,
Oh Lord, don't let him win...

"Well that Spanish train still runs between,
Quadalquivir and old Saville,
And at dead of night the whistle blows,
And people fear she's running still...
And far away in some recess
The Lord and the Devil are now playing chess,
The Devil still cheats and wins more souls,
And as for the Lord, well, he's just doing his best...

And I said "Lord, oh Lord, you've got to win,
The Sun is down and the night is riding in,
That train is still on time,
Oh my soul is on the line,
Oh Lord, you've got to win..."

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 10 January 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I never knew he had such completely insane album covers.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 10 January 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Asuming that him and Dudley Moore are the same person, I pick Derek and Clive's 'Ad Nauseum' (original version with the bag of sick)

Robin Goad (rgoad), Friday, 10 January 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Re. CdB and Nick Drake: the story I heard was that Drake wouldn't let CdB join his band because CdB was too short.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone in Ireland of my age knows all the words to 'Patricia The Stripper'

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 10 January 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"If beds could talk, mine would be singing,
Singing about the time when you and I were lovers,
All night long, we could not stop,
They were amazing times, they were the crazy times,
They were the best that I have known,
Another place to fly, another taste to try,
We were awake in a beautiful dream;"

Heh heh! If beds could talk, i think Chris' would be saying: "Shoot me, please! Put me out of this agony!"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 10 January 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris de Burgh's The Ecstacy of Flight ? It's the gayest record yet made my a hetrosexual behemoth-browed lothario. I love it like "the night" itself. Aussi, Only Chris would have an aftershow party which involved "going out to dinner with a gorgeous singer...to a little place I found RIGHT HERE IN DUBLIN !! (/Milton Keynes/the NYNEX/etc). There is a terrific website I once saw run but this massive bearlike german guy who has a photo of him hugging a visibly petrified and comparatively tiny de burgh. Crusader is my favourite album. There is a new de burgh best of out, and he's got a new album with a really daft title "Perfect Timing !" and a cool Outrun arcade cabinet vs Roger Waters style retro 80s cover.I do recommend tracking down the individual albums of this amazing, illogical sonic alchemist...as my man Lynskey said....Case Dismissed ! Case Dismissed ! Case Dismissed ! Case Dismissed ! Case Dismissed ! Do you like tennis...DO you like tennis ? DO YOU LIKE TENNIS ? YES. I DO.

shirokuma, Friday, 10 January 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ricky, yeah I mentioned that above. I read it in the Patrick Humphries bio of Nick Drake. Like I said he called him a small guy with a big guitar. Haha.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 10 January 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

eh?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 10 January 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

in response to shirokuma

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 10 January 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That's our friend Shirokuma for you. Other DeBurgh lyrical treats include Moonlight and Vodka - where the pocket genius ryhmes the phrase "serious business" with the phrase "serious business". Classic.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 10 January 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

who needs rhetorical questions?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was wee Chris de Burgh's aunt, Mrs de Burgh, taught me the piano. She had bony fingers. She lived in a house in Wiltshire beside the Devizes road. I do not play the piano now, although I once bought a second-hand accordion, which I've thrown away as it sounds lamentable.

"The Record Company Bash

There's a woman in the wardrobe singing Beatles out of tune,
And a salesman in the corner trying to blow up a burst balloon,
And the Managing Director, he's a-lying on his back,
He's got ice-cream on his trousers and he's planning his attack,
It's just another Record Company Bash,
Nice to know they've got the cash,
You're the only one here I can talk to,
Is there nowhere near we can walk to,
I really want to see you again,
But I don't know your name;

Let's go, let's go home,
Yea, let's go, let's go home,
Let's go, let's get out...

The Promotion Department secretaries are out to kill tonight,
And the A and R director is still looking for his wife,
Oh and there's a party in the bedroom,
They've got the mirror on the floor,
And there's a guy who says he's from Rolling Stone
Who shouldn't be here at all,
It's just another Record Company Bash,
Nice to know someone's got cash,
And they're gonna do something obscene
With the video machine,
I really think it's time to leave,
Won't you come with me please?

Let's go, let's go home,
Let's go, let's go home,
Grab a bottle of whisky and a bottle of wine,
It doesn't really matter if it's your place or mine,
Let's go, let's go home..."

NO SELL OUT!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 10 January 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic DeBurgh there. I'll see your Record Company Bash and raise you . . . .

The Sound Of A Gun

I have seen the diamond stylus,
Cut a groove from north to south,
Heard them calling from the islands for a better day,
One by one they tell their story,
One by one it's just the same,
"They've taken our leaders,
And all their believers are paralysed,
And now we can't turn back - somebody is watching you!
Don't turn round - yesterday's gone!
And even the children are waking at midnight in tears,
Didn't anyone hear? Mother, mother, mother..."

Hush child go to sleep, it's only the sound of a gun,
Hush child go to sleep, it's only the sound of a gun;

Looking out my bedroom window,
I remember early days,
When the shot that wounded millions took our breath away,
But now the shadow of a gunman,
With his balaclava eyes, is making the news,
Calling out the warnings on the telephone,
"You're in the line of fire - wish there was another way!
Line of fire - anything goes,"
And who is the winner, and what will the minister say,
At the end of the day? Never, never, never, never!

Hush child go to sleep, it's only the sound of a gun,
Hush child go to sleep, it's only the sound of a gun;

This is bella soma, this is bella soma...
Mother, mother, mother...

Hush child go to sleep, it's only the sound of a gun,
Hush child go to sleep, it's only the sound of a gun,
Hush child go to sleep, it's only the sound of a gun,
Hush child do not weep,
It's only the sound of a world on the run,
You're hearing the sound of a gun;

"I have seen the diamond stylus"? Wtf?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 10 January 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh fuck it here's Man on the Line tooMan On The Line
There's a man on the line, he is wasting my time,
He calls me everyday, he's got nothing to say,
And at the dead of night when I turn out the light,
The telephone rings, it's him again;

I wouldn't mind if he told me,
Just what the hell is going on,
He like a man in a fever,
I know that something is wrong,
He's whispering your name!

There's a man on the line and he is wasting my time,
He calls me everyday, and he won't go away,
Is he part of a plan, is he a government man,
Well one thing is true, he's after you;

He must be totally crazy,
He must be out of his mind,
To be in love with a lady,
Ah when that lady is mine,
He's whispering your name, whispering your name,
Tell me, tell me,

How many men have seen this heaven,
How many down in flames,
How many men are lost forever,
How many still in chains?
Just whispering your name, whispering your name...

There's a man on the line and he's still waisting my time,
He calls me day after day and it's always the same,
And at the dead of the night,
When I turn out the light,
The telephone rings, yes it's him again;

He's got me deep in suspicion,
He's got me looking at you,
He like a man with a mission,
Ah tell me what did you do?
He's whispering your name, whispering your name,
Tell me, tell me,

How many men have seen this heaven,
How many down in flames,
How many men are lost forever,
How many still in chains?
Just whispering your name, whispering your name,

Oh there's a man on the line - whispering your name!

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 10 January 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

But surely nothing tops...

"I Want It.....

Four in the morning and I just can't sleep
I've got a craving now for something sweet
So I head off for my local all-night supermarket,
When I get there, it's deserted;
And now I'm standing at the chocolate shelf,
Under the sign that says, "Help Yourself"
If you really gotta have it,
then we really gotta sell it to ya
This is for people who say....

I want it and I want it now!
I want it and I just can't wait!
I want it and I want it now.
I want it and I will not wait......
I want it.......now

I sit at home and when I watch TV,
I gotta have remote control with me,
Oh and when I'm watching football,
I can go to total recall,
I got freeze frame, I got slo - mo.
This is the way that it was meant to be,
You gotta get ready for the century
I'm a total modern man,
And I got total modern plans
And it's so easy when you say.....
I want it and I want it now!

I gotta get a feel to try,
gotta get a meal inside,
Gotta get a deal tonight,

Here it is the new sensation,
Listen to the new generation,
We want something, we want it now!
You don't need no invitation,
Listen to the new conversation,
We want something, we want it now.......
We want it now,"

Or from 'Guilty Secret':
"The phone is hot with whispered words,
And when we can't speak we have textual delight,"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, you can't figure out what "Man on the Line" is really about?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

it's about a gentleman who calls my house phone, but never speaks to me. i suspect that he is poking my lay-dee...

chris de burgh (chrissy), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, did you lift the idea for that song off of Sylvia's "Nobody"?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i think my wife is using my phone to have hot whispered words with her lover...and when she can't, they have textual delight...

As for Sylvia's "Nobody", would a visionary artist like me need outside help?

chris de burgh (chrissy), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, obviously Sylvia didn't quite run with the idea to the paranoid extremes that you did in your song, which is def. to your credit. I'd think of it more as a "variation" than as, er, "outside help".

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 10 January 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

How Great is this? I guess you folks have met your match huh? I'm happy to see Chris here. I haven't seen him in a while and he does deserve to have ALL of his wonderful music #1 hits. He has worked very hard to get where he is today.
I want to tell him that I hope Rosanna wins Miss Universe. Good Luck!

What in the name of...?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 November 2003 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"he does deserve to have ALL of his wonderful music #1 hits."

not ALL of them. i was just coasting with "lady in red". that was just chris keeping the money rolling in, so he could be financially secure enough to indulge more arty delights. "if beds could talk" was where chris really discovered his own sound.

chris de burgh (christy), Sunday, 23 November 2003 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Best thread ever. This time, it's sincerely heartfelt.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi DV. Are you about today?

Gale, Monday, 24 November 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

If Beds Could Talk ... was a good song too, no doubt about it but I love songs such as The Same Sun. This is a wondeful one. I also like many more of them as well. :)
