The Octopus Project -- C or D?

I had never heard of this band until a few weeks ago, when a friend lent me their record, Identification Parade. They're from Austin, and are clearly Tortoise influenced, yet there's a really great fucked up quality in their rhythm section. Nothing's ever quite syncopated, so it really swings. I've really been digging this lately... Any fans here? Anyone know anything about them?

Downloaders: tracks to search are "The Way Things Go" (a great heavy beat and some fuzzy keyboard riffs) and "What They Found" (fractured and fun). It just now occurred to me that with a few subtle changes in arrangment, a lot of this could pass for microhouse, albeit sometimes with live instruments.

I love Identification Parade, is this their only album? When those drums come in on "Crying at the Aquarium"...shivers.

By the way, I can't stand Tortoise. Too polished.

one year passes...
This band played in Knoxville last night to a packed house (?! I never knew they were so popular here.) They said it was the best show of their tour without doubt. We don't get that kind of thing very often here, so it was nice.

And people danced! It was uplifting to see all the Knox corny indie fuqs actually DANCING, and DANCING TO SYNTHETIC BEATS EVEN! Although after I got excited about that, I got a little depressed cause I realized they only feel comfortable dancing to beatz if it's in the context of what the feel is a "real band". Oh well, it was a great show.

the first track off that black octopus lipstick project dance collabo ep is not half-bad.

yes! i love this band. sadly, the time we booked them in philly, we had 4 people in the audience. live, they're even more impressive.

four months pass...
Has anyone heard their new record? "Music For Happiness" is shit hot, and the last few tracks are really nice too. It's also a 38 minute album (this is a good thing)!

This band sounds like Trans Am.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, they just played here again and it was fucking massive. They are huge here (Knoxville) -- my friend turned to me during their set and said "I bet it is weird to be a kind of mid-level touring band and be fucking huge in a place like Knoxville, TN." I yelled MORE BEATZ PLEASE when they did their more rock-y stuff. They love Knoxville and shower us with pastel balloons!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 10 March 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Really? Then I should probably stop avoiding Trans Am.

Their new album is really growing on me. I'm sort of jealous of their production, it's so DIRTY.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

they do amazing things with the theremin! i highly recommend them!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Huh. They played in Chicago last week, opening for my friends Velvetron. I'd seen Velvetron recently, so I didn't go, but now I wish I had.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I wish I had gone, I didn't know about it.

(who am I kidding, I'm usually too lazy to go to shows that are 10 mins away)

This group is exactly why corny indie fuxx in austin should stay away from electronics.
