I just bought "Justified" (gonna post more about that later) and the Neptunes tracks are fab, but c'mon Phil Spector... !

The Neptunes aren't teen at all, as all of their work with Teen Pop acts comprises of the performers trying to escape from the genre (Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears.) I do think that if they ever get a box set it'll be superior to Back To Mono

I never really got Spector. Easy to admire but hard to love - difficult to listen with an open mind after I'd read Ronnie Spector's biog.

Daniel is expressing what I couldn't cos I'd been down the pub and it was late at night - the Neptunes, great though they are, are like most super-producers in that they get called in to smooth an artist through a transition stage or a difficult record (actually Spector set the tone for this 'boutique producer' thing with his coming out of retirement to (over)do Let It Be, I'd guess).

I don't know how regularly they hit the mark in their pursuit of teen appeal, either. I think their most satisfying productions often come when they get the opportunity to shape artists - Kelis and Clipse, say.

I'm more interested in a comparison a poster intitiated weeks ago, I forget who, Neptunes vs. Jim O'Rourke. What do y'all think? They're both post modernists who combine high and low forms.
