The idea of teaching hip-hop in the academy = classic
The reality of teaching hip-hop in the academy = dud

Viz. Take the best and the brightest—Cornel West, Skip Gates, Noam Chomsky—take 'em all, give 'em a mic, put 'em on a stage, and let's go at it

This is the best and brightest? Oy.

Beware: anyone who refers to Henry Louis Gates as "Skip" outside of Harvard cocktail parties.

Boyd comes across like Carlton trying to impress one of Will's friends.

It's an interesting article: particulary this trying to cross into this canon-(ie academia)orientated world with music; this potential clash of canon vs anti-canon or canon vs canon and how they play off against each other (obv, this may be all played out to the rest of ilm, Imay need a new critical matrix, but)... yeah, he is slightly "down with the kids" irritating, but I'm drunk and have been writing about love for the past hour, for tomorrow's Sha!zam update, ever read it sterling? you'd hate it, honest.

And oh yeah, Meltzer was there like 30 years before this Boyd guy (see 'Vinyl Reckoning') so he's no revolutionary; in fact I used a quote from Meltzer in my Foucault essay which I could just have easily have cribbed from this dolt.
