Well? "December" by TF?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 12 January 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Guess I'd better hear some Big Star then eh?

I made a conscious decision never to listen to them, back when TFC were being compared to them in EVERY REVIEW EVER, for fear of ruining my gleefully naive enjoyment of TFC. Is this foolish?

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 13 January 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say that's foolish.

"December" by TF?

I think that's actually based on a Television song off of MM.

Cunga (Cunga), Friday, 5 August 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

i always figured "sixteen blue" by the replacements was westerburg's take on "thirteen".

which one?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 5 August 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

Man on the Moon, REM

trappist monkey, Friday, 5 August 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

the best one that maybe isn't a ripoff, but definitely sounds like they were immersed in those BS records, is "All the Myths on Sunday" by Diesel Park West (one of the two good songs on that "Shakespeare Alabama" record). And I mean obviously "Yankee Hotel" is a total "Third" rip. Teenage Fanclub always bored me to tears.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 5 August 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Something from this, perhaps?

Tommy Hoehn: Blow Yourself Up

Although he's from Memphis too, so maybe it's just something in the BBQ sauce.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

well, I'm working on a piece about Big Star's new album and the new bio of the band, so I went back and listened to a lot of it. Memphis powerpop is definitely a genre of sorts: Van Duren, Tommy Hoehn, Chris Bell's solo stuff, the Scruffs. The Scruffs always underwhelmed me a bit--some good songs. I guess it's like everything that comes out of Memphis, no matter how straight they try to play it, it always comes out strange. Because it's the most boring place on earth and also one of the most avant-garde, go figure.

Anyhow, that new Big Star record is...well, it's...I mean as far as it goes it's...the songs are...the bass player went out to lunch and he...uhh...they wrote some songs but they didn't...you'll be suitably...and compared to their classic...countless imitators... and cult heroes can't always...my beer got warm...their signature sound and at this remove it becomes obvious...two of the guys are in their mid-'50s and the other two are younger...

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Edd, I feared that the new Big Star would sound something like you described it. I'll probably stick with the Van Duren and the original BS releases. Maybe throw some Emmett Rhodes in for good measure.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

there's like one good song on that BS album. the rest of it is...ahh...I just don't wanna say...I hope Ryko pays 'em lots of money...

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

"Don't Look Back" by Teenage Fanclub

-Vest, Friday, 5 August 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Not to be a pedantic fussbudget but I would just intuitively doubt that the Raspberries were ripping off Big Star.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 5 August 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

the television song the "december" lifts from is "guiding light".

Is it me, or doesn't "More Than Words" sounds a lot like "You and Your Sister?"

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 5 August 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

All of these songs are so good. Perhaps more bands should rip off Big Star.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 6 August 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Did "Holocaust" rip of "Mrs. Lennon"? Or did they both rip off the same source? Or are they both just descending chord progressions with spooky echoey production?

At least "Holocaust" is an improvement on a good song, if it is a ripoff.
