There are lots of great Irish drinking songs....this is one of my favorite bands for drinking music- I saw them in a pub here in Seattle this fall, and they're great when you're completely drunk. ;- )

lyra (lyra), Monday, 13 January 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't sing much when drinking, but a prerequisite is that the lyrics have to include one or the other of the following lines in the chorus:

1. 'don't just stand there, bust a move!'

2. 'I guess you're just what I needed!'

Tom Millar (Millar), Monday, 13 January 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Last time I heard a chorus of drunks shout in unison was New Year's, "The Ice of Boston" by the Dismemberment Plan - an annual event. Magical, yes.

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 13 January 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"Summer In Siam," "Fairytale of New York," and "The Old Main Drag" by The Pogues.

My first night in Barcelona I was drug into a small bar, full of older, drunk Spaniards, all singing, quite loudly, off-key, and several beats behind the record "Achy-Breaky Heart." At the time I laughed. Now I shudder. And in my favorite bar, my friend and I play "American Pie," and the crowd usually joins in on the chorus.

At home, when drinking and making noise, we've been doing an Elton John thing, mixed with a bit of Loggins and Messina (don't ask) and then we start making stuff-up, which actually sounds quite good after enough alcohol has been consumed (and especially where we're all jammed into the closet 'cause we think that the reverb is better in there). Oh, and we've been doing some 70's retro-things too, but have had to admit defeat on the Bee Gees, as none of us can come near to hitting the notes. Basically, we don't so much sing songs that we like but rather we sing songs that we know - they're not always the same thing, unfortunately (which might explain the L&M lyrics).

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 13 January 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

'We want some Pussy' - 2 Live Crew

I got suspended in high school for playing that one at a school dance. Rightfully so.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 13 January 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

But did you get any pussy?

dave q, Monday, 13 January 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm... believe or not that particular night I think I may have (I think I had a steady gf at the time). Pretty amazing that she would have slept with me after slipping on such a caddish song.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 13 January 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

not that i ever really sing while drunk, but if i were the type of person who does,i'm sure i'd sing innocent when you dream by tom waits....

christoff (christoff), Monday, 13 January 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Tom Waits and drunkeness. Yeah, I heard he brushes his teeth with bourbon in the morning. Did you know he was born in a barroom, or was it the back seat of a cab, or an empty car of a lonely freight train, and his mom who was a prostitute or a hobo fed him moonshine out of a babybottle? Also, Momus is really a pirate. You can tell by the eyepatch.

Paula G., Monday, 13 January 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Spirit Of The West - Home For A Rest
Stan Rogers - Barrett's Privateers (though most people can't get that far into it especially when drinking)
Grebt Big Sea - Run Away or Old Black Rum
Mackeel - Star of the County Down
Ashely MacIssac - Sleepy Maggie
Sloan - Underwhelmed
The Pogues - pick one

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 13 January 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The Standelles - Dirty Water (if your near Boston I suppose)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 13 January 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Guns N Roses-Paradise City:no reason for this one it's just a great drinking song.
ODB-Shimmy Ya: like the fact it's fun to attempt to sing the "dun-di-di-dun-di-di-dun-di-di-dun-dun" piano intro.
Pogues-Fairytale of New York: is good for being a sensitive drunk type singing

you walk into any pub in australia, you WILL hear the following:

run to paradise - choirboys
you shook me all night long - ac/dc
better - screaming jets

they're okay, but my mates and i usually go for 80s pop (take on me, rock me amadeus etc.) or ultra-glossy teenpop, especially the veronicas' 4ever, stacey orrico, ashlee simpson etc.

Beagle Boy (Beagle Boy), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

To add to the list of Irish folk music, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem generally sang about drinking, fighting or shagging if they weren't singing ballads. A few of my favourites that focus on drinking:

Mountain Dew (both versions, but prefer the one that starts with "Hi-dee-diddley-di-dee-dum...!)
Jug of Punch
The Moonshiner
Finnegan's Wake
Wild Rover
Juice of the Barley
Reilly's Daughter

Had the pleasure of sitting in on a rehearsal in Providence last night by Joe Fletcher and The Wrong Reasons. They're playing the Newport Folk Fest on Sunday, July 29. This is from his album, "White Lighter."
