delighted that all threads are becoming conversations. taking the suggestion and here ya go.

kevin enas, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We might as well put this one permanently at the top of the page. Okay then, Lakers vs. Sixers, UK General Election, MTV Movie Awards broadcast, the Flay/Morimoto Iron Chef rematch travesty, the wonderful work of Chris Ware and Bob Fingerman -- anyone want to share any thoughts?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope all UK ILMers are voting today...unless you're voting Conservative, in which case stay at home.

DG, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chatter is weak, I only do it in hopes that someone will tell me to fuck off. They botched the Bootylicious video, it's awful, pink is a terrible color for anyone without some kind of angle (i.e., it's your name, you've got the Lolita look happening, etc). The Lakers-Sixers game is great, way better than this board, sorry. But then, I'm the one spent the first half of the ILM Potion Lounge meet talking about the Sixers-Bucks game.

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, ya'all stole my idea. Bastards.

Ally, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OH and our softball team lost tonight, probably because Neil busted his knee.

Ally, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kevin gave no credit, true. HE MUST BE TAKEN TO TASK.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I WILL DESTROY YOU KEVIN.

Probably not. I couldn't even take a walk tonight, I so suck. Look out Derek Jeter, etc.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It was a horrible idea, why would anyone want to take credit for it? ook at this, this is chaos. I bought an '87 Oldsmobile with sheepskin seats today. ATC's "Around the World" is one of the best songs ever. The new Backyard Babies album is SO faggy, but good. Overtime, rock! Chaos, I tell you.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Community? Fuck that. Up with signal, down with noise!

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Duh, chaos is WHY it's a good idea. It's a pointless thread with pointless ideas and pointless posts, and the best part is IT'S NOT STOPPING ME FROM POSTING THE SAME SHIT ANYWHERE ELSE. God, I love this board.

Not really, but I like saying such dramatic things.

Hey, why does Ramon look so sad and existential in that pic with the Madonna poster?

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but try and give it focus and talk about everything else other than music. See how we have shared interests and sharp differences, and thus form a growing sense of community!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because the reason he doesn't have a job is he has to spend 6 hours a day in his room practicing looking sad and existential, duh. Also because we had just drank two Budweisers each in four sips and a $6 bottle of 12-yr old rotten sake, on top of already being drunk (how else would we drink that shit?). Also because a girl had just given him a cigarette burn on his arm and he knew the excitement had peaked for the evening.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He shoulda been in NYC, he woulda had a lot more excitement than a frigging cigarette burn, I do that to myself every weekend, hello.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's silly, the only reason to get burnt by a cigarette is to flirt, hello. He took my cousin home with him, so maybe the evening did have more excitement in store, I dunno. I don't wanna know about that shit. My cousin is a crazy Serbo-Croation-speaking Yale student who actually agrees with most of Ramon's opinions, it's absurd. The Lakers lost, I can't believe it.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ramon has no opinions, just a never ending stream of ludicrious statements, that's what makes him Ramon. Anyhow, showing off how I can handle fire IS my way of flirting, you shoulda seen me with the lighter. It's boring, getting burnt. That's not exciting at all.

For Ned: I enter a rooooom and allll the girls say, c'mon Jarv, can I be the first? You make us so hot, we feel we're gonna BURST! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........yeah....So please, so pleeease don't leave me alone in this double bed, it smells of damp towels and ASTHMA INHALERS, save me from my muthah's laugh, saave meee....yeah, that's right girls, that's RIGHT, save me from mah own hand, oooh ooh ooh ohhhh...

(yeah, I can read my work email at home. What's it to you? Craig's taught me the hook up. Craig is a ROCK GOD and he trumps all of you for smashing up his hotel room at the ritz)

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw you with the lighter at the hotel, I don't need to see it again. Getting burnt is awesome, you get big build-up to the singeing noise, the smell of burnt hair, and (hopefully) a scar.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When did I have a lighter at the hotel? When I was trying to burn Ramon? I don't remember this otherwise, but then again I was distracted by the ongoing fight regarding music and Stephanie's flip out. I remember burning the hell out of my hand at Potion for no reason. And Steph dumped wax on the table and in the ashtray and kept putting out the candle.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When you got all pissed off that Ramon wouldn't go out with you and said your corset needed more boobs, that's when you burned yourself. For an extended period of time, in fact. I guess that's also when Steph flipped out, not that I noticed, she flipped out practically ever night. Steph played with hot wax? She finally does something I could sort of approve of and I don't even notice.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you guys like Pocky?

Mike Hanley, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You guys were so lame, why did no one want to go out with me? I wanted all four of us to go out to a club and have a good time and you're all, "Shut up, slut, we aren't going out" then he's all "Going out sucks" then you're all, "Jeez, I'll go out with you just to shut you the hell up about going out". I had good reason to get pissed off at you two, now that I think about it. What the hell was that about? I was totally wasting my life away during those twenty minutes.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Philadelphia freedom shine on me, I love you
Shine a light through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine a light shine a light
Shine a light won't you shine a light
Philadelphia freedom I love you, yes I do

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate Philly freedom, it sucks and it looks like a cracked bell. It's Philly cops that rock. Off Mumia!

Ally, I did not call you a slut at all that night, despite the fact you were making out with my friend and modeling your corset for him, and three or four times I very nicely, without any provisions, said that I'd go out with you, before finally saying I'd go out with you to shut you up. You have to realize that when Ramon thinks a night is shot, going out with him is a complete waste of time. Having fun with him depends upon him being on his game. When he's off his game, he spits, yells, and smokes even more than usual, without half the entertainment value.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoa, whoa, whoa, I wasn't "making out with your friend". Ramon kissed ME. Once. I laughed at him because it struck me funny that, even though I KNEW he liked me in his Ramon use-'em-and-lose-'em way, he had been macking on MY friend for quite some time and then suddenly decided to randomly ram his tongue down my throat, like I'm all, oh, hey, please, I have a sign on my chest, MAKE OUT WITH ME RANDOMLY THANK YOU. That's the end of that story. What do you and him do, make him ridiculous stories regarding me to tell each other so that you both have completely the wrong idea about what I'm doing with the other? What the fuck is this, Melrose Place? Nor was I modelling my corset for anyone in particular, you lot ASKED to see it, I said okay. I was actually hoping that putting on a "going out" shirt would get people to, you know, GO OUT. As in LEAVE THE HOTEL ROOM. EVER. PLEASE. THANK YOU.

Can I reiterate I was NOT making out with Ramon before this entire message board thinks I'm a crackwhore? Not that I care what anyone here thinks but it's still nice to not be thought of as a complete tosser.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and I also think this is the best advertisement ever for the October UBER-GET-TOGETHER. "Ally makes out with everyone! Otis gets blindingly drunk! Ramon will destroy you! Fred will sit and act annoyed at all of us!"

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You know there IS such a thing as Instant Messenger...

Clarke B., Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello, what did you think a thread labelled general chatter would be full of?

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Making out causes mind hallucinations of periwinkle pigmy peroxide dreams.

Mike Hanley, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be in New York in October, but I don't think I'll be going above Grand based on this scary scenario. People setting themselves on fire, sticking tongues down throats, and refusing to leave hotel rooms? It sounds like a script Harvey Keitel turned down as 'too sleazy'.

Momus, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And there you were saying the downtown scene was much more "interesting". Pff.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i leave for a few hours and this is what i get? and i shall give the credit-ALLY. there.as for the ramon stuff..fun fun happy time. you have all inspired me to go have a cigarette now. but i prefer picking at cuts and scabs to burning my flesh. pepsi

kevin enas, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So it's a nice day, Prince is 43, Paddy McAloon is like 47 (?), and me — well, let's just say, first prime no. for four years, I know exactly where I was when Geoff Hurst brought football home and hey! No time to be twenny-waaan!!

Coolest thing today so far: standing candidate in Hackney South for the Communist Party = Beavis!! Huh-huh Uh-huh-huh

mark s, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dude i was in hackney the other weekend and i saw those communists campaigning in their car, round haggerston or somewhere. they had a hammer & sickle flag flying out the sunroof, and a megaphone but you couldn't hear what they were saying because of the wind. but they were all, like, about 60. 5 sixty yr olds in a beat up astra with a hammer&sickle flag. how cool is that? or, at least it was, until the wind dropped and you could hear the communist candidate and he sounded like goddamn arthur lowe. illusions dashed or what? hackney can be so cool sometimes...

gareth, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Has everyone seen the picture of what Lil' Kim wore to the MTV Movie Awards? If not, click here.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw. I was all geared-up to say, "Wish I could wear something like that..." — but actually I *could* wear something like that. Granted it would look a bit lamer on me.

mark s, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone could conceivably wear that, provided they had enough glue and sequins. I guess it's way of bringing celebrity fashion to the masses? Screw paying $5,000 for a Chanel dress Jennifer Lopez wore, for $5 you can recreate the Lil Kim look at home!

Nicole, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris Ware's stuff moves me like Radiohead's used to, i.e. not much. Which isn't to say he's bad but reviews of Acme are always funny for their lapses into Malmsteenism - dude, he got 250 panels on one frickin' page!!!! (actually this *is* cool).

UK election. I'm not registered where I live, turns out, so I'm going on a mad dash back to th'family home after work to vote. It'll feel nicer voting against a sitting Tory than a sitting Labour MP anyway.

Tom, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what is a 'corset'?

fred's role will be, like on the ill-fated birthday weekend, "fred wonders why the hell he is here."

tom, you are so beyond everything. what, besides music, moves you?

how about those sixers? kobe SUCKED last night. what happened to "the greatest player in the world"? looks like mckie slapped some cuffs on him. and iverson, you can't keep the man down. then again, this reminds me a bit of when the "unbeatable" bulls dropped game one to the lakers only to win four in a row.

fred solinger, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In Comics what moves me?? The second (suburban) half of Bagge's Hate, Clowes' stuff after Velvet Glove, Jaime Hernandez' stuff in Love & Rockets....the usual suspects in other words (spot the man who gave up reading in '98 or so). "Not moved" actually isnt right for Ware - I come away feeling uncomfortable and diminished. Someone like Adrian Tomine actually does leave me completely unmoved, which is a different feeling.

Tom, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let me just say that anyone who starts going on frickin' basketball has no right to complain when other people start with the football chatter.

And I'm saying this as someone who hates football chatter.

Nicole, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Destiny's Child most certainly DID NOT screw up the "Bootylicious" video! It's the best video they've done since "Bugaboo"!

Not only do they have all sorts of people flexing on how bootylicious they are, they have one of the most hysterical shots ever to appear in a mainstream video. Also, Kelly is my girl.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha! Kobe sucks because the Lakers are evil! Mutombo will shit on the Lakers! hee! Take your overgrown buttfaced Shaq and run away!

-- Mike Hanley, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nicole,

this is a general chatter thread; it's not a mailing list which was formed to be about *music.* it's like if i talked about basketball in the "her name was pauline and she lived in a tree" thread, though maybe that would've been a good idea. ned brought up the topic and i just ran with it. ;)

and i've yet to see the "bootylicious" video though i desperately want to. i was in the car yesterday when i heard that riff and thought, "wow, 'bootylicious' is going to sound great on radio," only to realize i had the classic rock station on and it was actually that stevie nicks song. :P

fred solinger, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just sayin'. Sports should be banned anyway, unless it's some kind of bloodsport.

Nicole, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I want to see pro-celebrity football hooliganism. That'd be class.

DG, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

chris ware bores me too. the cheaply- sentimental-but-vaguely-disturbing comics template is as stale as capes and tights nowadays. i do like adrian tomine though, if not but just for the fact that he seems utterly sincere and seems to possess absolutely no comics background (i.e. no constant references to sci-fi or horror or superheroes like most other 'mature comics' about 'real-life people'). he seems like he's working in comics just because he can't get a job writing one of the plotlines on 'undressed' or something. i would start a thread about clowes if i hadn't wasted mine for today already on one that nobody is going to answer.

ethan, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely 'Undressed' only really has one plotline.

the pinefox, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Undressed is the worst show ever. I was never so confused in my life as I was watching it, and I felt infinitely stupider for having seen it. I blame Ian White.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no, no, you see, there's multiple plotlines written by multiple writers! and they all sort of seem like most of those alternative comics things that get so much love.

ethan, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Ethan, I know. I believe the only reason we watched it was because Ian knew someone who wrote for it, or was going to write for it, or something like that, to which I replied, "And that's a good thing?"

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

with witty comebacks like that, i think you could write for it.

ethan, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ethan, was it YOU who answered that they fancied an ilm regular?

fred solinger, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why is everyone assuming that someone fancies Ally when it's oh so obvious that these people actually fancy ME?

Sorry ladies; I'm taken. Sorry guys; I'm straight and taken. Still, I'm awfully flattered.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Excuse me, you egomaniacal bastard, they are all clearly talking about ME instead. Even you.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, mark! we share a birthday. isn't june 7th just the absolute BEST? i'll gie yer a toast tonight. right after i toast prince.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got Transformers: The Movie on video today.

james e l, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't fancy any of you, you're all horrid egomaniacal men with bad attitudes and quite frankly it's revolting. I only fancy Joe from now on.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking sides: Galvotron vs. Optimus Prime

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

unicron, if i understand correctly, devoured planets. when he voiced transformers - the movie, orson welles looked ready to give him a run for his money.

fred solinger, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In terms of the toy, Optimus Prime wins, better made and one of the truly classic transformers. The Glavatron toy was disppointing, bulky and always falling over. In the cartoon, Optimus was a bit pompous, and must have died a million times...Galvatron looked way cooler! But you know, good beats evil everytime!

james e l, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Optimus Prime was a crap toy! He had that loader that turned into a base and he was way too big for it. On the cartoon, you'd see alll the Autobots busy at work in it and you couldnt even fit Optimus Prime into it. Rubbish! Galvotron could turn into a gun which made a cool peoww! noise.Remember Kup? He was supposed to transform into some cool fewchurr-car but it looked like a wheelbarrow. My neighbour had a transformer that turned into this big fuck-off scorpion. That was the shit, cant remember its name though.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The one you're thinking of is 'Scorponok', I believe (don't ask me how I know these things). Besides, Soundwave and his cassette/robot things was the best, and I never got my hands on him. Optimus Prime beats Galvatron any day, despite the latter being voiced by Leonard Nimoy.

DG, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just sayin'. Sports should be banned anyway, unless it's some kind of bloodsport

Anyone see the Pride Grand Prix fight between Sakuraba and Royce Gracie? Gracie's lying there on his back doing his stupid threatened animal routine, and Sakuraba jumps OVER his legs to land a piledriver punch to the face. The most awesome thing in the history of bloodsports.

Kris, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing voiced by leonard nimoy can ever be beaten, ever. he could take over the world with a rotten ventriloquist dummy.

ethan, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But I'd have loved to feel free to vote for the Green Party in Oxford East, Tom ...

I voted Lib Dem, of course. Against all tactical advice, and against a Tory majority of 77. We will see.

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Happy b-day Mark and Tracer. Anyone else celebrate the anniversary of their birth on June 6 'sides me?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Most illogical, Ethan.

DG, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Transformers The Movie... Hmmmm... I think I'm right in saying that that was Orson Welles' last film.

DavidM, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You are.

DG, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Happy birthday! If I had a cake I'd jump out of it! Instead:

The most bizarre thing I've ever seen. I just posted it in the Musicals thread but really I can never get enough of this one.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any Brits staying up to see Tory arseholes getting whacked into oblivion?

Johnathan, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw the Transformers movie in theaters when it came out. Sadly, I saw the video a few months ago and couldn't believe how bad it was. I remember being terrified at the sight of Autobots beings dropped into lava, being killed. Traumatic stuff. I had all 5 Voltron lions as well. Also, I saw and heard Bootylicious for the first time yesterday and was not impressed. And, word is that the next Mercury Rev album is very much like Deserter's Songs. The end.

bnw, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just heard this Transformers rap single by D-Stroy called "Roll On", it's a 12" on Matador that everyone loves. Except me.

Also, I had been waiting for a while to hear this Toshimaru Nakamura and Sachiko M stuff where they use a sampler but plug it into itself, natch with a mixing board? It is the most painful music I have ever heard. That sine wave bored a hole in my skull, and now I can't hear my new Autechre album. Has anybody else heard this?

Dave M., Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep. Very pleasant soundtrack for doing the weekly shop (Sainsbury's in Ladbroke Grove, trying not to bump into Nigella Lawson) much like their previous 78 albums.

Now here's a ball which could roll; acts/artists who put too many albums out without any pressing need (stylistic variation or whatever). Er . . . Nick Cave, Gorky's, Merzbow (and I speak as someone who so far has only got as far as listening to 24 out of the 50 CDs in that bloody box set), Super Furries, and especially deceased acts (Muslimgauze, 2Pac, Eva F*****g Cassidy). Especially the latter! Have any of those housewives who bought Songbird out of Tescos listened to any of the tracks bar THOSE two? Listen to Diamanda Galas and/or Victor Jara instead, I say. Anyway - acts who could do with not putting anything out for, say, 10 years? Any offers?

Marcello Carlin, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tindersticks, Stereolab and the High Llamas (those mid-90s ghosts).
