ADMIN: Chat, Blogs And Forum Expansion - Read This Regulars!

A few things have come up and I thought I'd throw them open to the forum:

1. Chat - as in back-and-forth off-topic messages of presumably no/limited interest to most people. This isn't a bad thing but it can be offputting and derail threads. Can we show a bit of restraint, and should FT have a chatroom for this kind of thing?

2. The idea of a second forum set up for non-music talk among ILM regulars. ILM would be kept for music discussions, the other forum would be an almost-entirely-unmoderated free-for-all where meets could be planned, gossip could be exchanged, culture sport etc could be talked about, and so on. Is this a good idea?

3. Mitch suggests below that rolling feedback threads could be started to discuss some of the sites linked to or by or with FT. (eg Josh Blog, Skykicking etc.) If people think this is a good idea then let's do it.

Moderator, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Vaguely related: I was thinking the other day that maybe this board should have threads donated to the sites and blogs of FT participants. A thread donated to josh blog, fr'instance. Or do we already have enough analysis of all things FT-related going on here?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think the idea of the blogging related threads is an interesting one, my only concern would be if, for example, some idiot had a problem with Josh's blog and took the opportunity to trash him personally.

Nicole, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, I'm sure the same moderation guidelines would apply. Tell you what, if someone wants to start a rolling feedback thread on their site, then they should do so and we'll have a special little section for them.

Tom, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think chatrooms are stupid. I barely even like talking in real life, much less online.

Re: The blog thing, I don't know, isn't that what emailing someone is for? I suppose if Tom goes thru with the idea that me and him discussed a teensy bit yesterday, which is starting a separate *forum* for general not-necessarily-music chat (as opposed to just a separate thread) then you could do the blog thing there.

I kind of think a general forum is a good idea, but hey, I would.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, and could you please change the title of this thread? I'm not even speaking to him anymore after the latest accusation so I'd really pretty please appreciate it if that was done away with. Make it a discussion of whether or not people would read a separate forum for everything non-musical, be it general patter or movie discussion or sports or whatever anyone wanted to talk about.

And again, I'm really sorry for continuing that discussion, Tom. It's done, finito. Don't worry :)

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Done so, Ally, and changed the thread blurb to be a bit more useful.

Tom, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

In a mad hurry: will try to make sense for once. re:2. If there's a "second forum" set aside for "non-music" topics, mayn't it cast a chill on what constitutes full'n'frank discussion "abt" music. Part of the energy is the surprise of a suddenly intruding outsider topic knocking fings into a new perspective? Obviously I speak as he with somewhat worst keep-to-the-thread discipline on the whole board, obvious recent felons included? Music is about everything, and sometimes everything's also abt music, no?

mark s, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah, this is true. My idea I suppose would be that ILM remains pretty much exactly as is (minus IM-style chit-chat) - music providing the starting point for branching into everything. Forum II would find everything providing the starting point for branching into everything else, I suppose. Music included.

So if say Ned wants to start a thread about italian football here, currently, great he can. But if everyone does so, ILM becomes about not-music and so cool new people looking for music chat find impenetrable forum. Whereas in theory if ILM is mostly music, new people can show up and join in and then if they like us there's this whole other place they can go. Does that make sense?

I'm not quite convinced myself.

Tom, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Hmmmm. Good point, yes. I suppose we can define it a bit, it's not like this board should be strictly about music, but if your post is strictly nonmusic (ie discussing the Dread Pirate Roberts or something) it'd go to the other board.

Or maybe we should just all be told to shut the hell up more often. "YOU ARE FULL OF BOLLOCKS SHUT UP" should be a good stock answer for when people go too far off topic.

I still think chatrooms are dumb. You can set one up, there are loads of free chatroom sites on the net, but it'll end up empty as these sort of formal chat rooms always do.

Chatrooms rule

-- Mike Hanley, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I suppose the only 'rule' would be that the questions posted here, if not the answers, should have some kind of musical content (hard to think of a good qn here which hasnt - the pynchon one almost didnt). The existence of F2 would mean that ppl could spin threads here which drift out into new threads there - in this utopian new forum there wouldn't be question limites either, heh heh heh.

Tom, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

you mean we could psot "buttfucke, montana - classic or dud?" threads on a weekend? But seriously, maybe there should be a thread where people can post their urls of thier blogs, and commentary can spin forth from there. I am kinda scared of bumping into ally in a cold dark chatroom though.

Geoff, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Like Ally will in spending time in a crackheaded cold dark chatroom, I mean, hello?

mark s, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I am awarding Mark S. first prize in the "best Ally impression" competition. Let me know how you want to collect your prize, which is Manics CDs, hello. Autographed. By me.

I definitely wouldn't be in the chatroom, I'm not THAT bored, no offense, I just hate chatrooms.

I don't think that blog thread is a bad idea.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Like, DUH, there's a good chance it would degenerate into hateful flaming and abuse of people and their blogs. Pfffff.

DG, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I like the blog thread idea, too. In fact, I like anything that would generate more hits on my website. A whore for hits, that's me.

Oh, before I forget: click this.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Hateful flaming and abuse is good, especially since some of it might be directed at Fred. I mean, hello, duh, you totally should've thought of that.

Okay, this is degenerating rapidly. I think the new ILM rule should be "ALLY IS NOT ALLOWED TO POST".

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Alright then, sensible answer: 1) A chatroom could be very interesting, but it could also be rubbish. I'd actually bet on the former, though. 2) A, like, totally *awesome* idea. But I'll only petitiion for it if it doesn't cost anything, it would be quite rude of me to lean on anyone to spend money for my benefit...except my parents, of course. Like, duh. 3) I mean, it could be bad but then everyone has an email address somewhere on their blog, so if there's any abuse to hurl it's probably been hurled already. Pfffff.

DG, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

OK. Blog Threads. If you have a site and you want a discussion started about it then START A THREAD and we'll categorise it appropriately. One thread per site.

Everything else I'm setting up a survey on.

Tom, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

dj martian is surely the pioneer in this field, remember this thread?

is it fun to abuse fred still? it seems so passe by now.

fred solinger, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Maybe if fred were less insulting towards people for arbitrary reasons? Anyway, I'm done with it. Though you do seem to enjoy the attention.

Nicole, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

arbitrary? ARBITRARY?! listen, i hang out here and say things and occasionaly, i'm besieged on all sides, though most frequently by ally and nicole, with ned and dan adding a little (VERY LITTLE!) and some other folks too. sure, i laugh, i poke fun at myself, but i like to get my shots in as well, and i don't think i've ever been intentionally insulting to anyone. i joke, sure, but that's because i love. i mean, if people can surely dish it out, they should just as readily take it. so, nicole, if i've been arbitrarily insulting to you, i do apologize and would like to let you know that i've never taken offense to the (many!) things you've said poorly about me, my hygiene, my taste, and my home state.

fred solinger, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Stop trying to act like you come from Massachusetts, those are the only people allowed to throw Drama Fits, not New Jerseyians. Dumbass.

You know we love you, Fred, even though you write horrid songs about Nicole and leave me psycho voice mail. It's all good. If we didn't love you, we'd ignore you entirely. OR WOULD WE?

I do remember that DJ Martian thread, that was permanently bizarre.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me what is SO insulting about being called "midwestern".

Patrick, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

patrick, absolutely nothing. i have no idea why my comments created such an uproar. according to mike, i sound like i come from new jersey; others say i have no discernible accent. i wish i had a tragic new jersey accent, but alas, no.

fred solinger, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

If you had a New Jersey accent, I would refuse to speak to you, ever.

Midwestern is like the stereotypical US accent, isn't it? Like when you have just an "American" character in a foreign tv show or film, they have midwestern accents, unless it's very specific to the story that they are a New Yorker or a Southerner.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I really would like to see any further discussion of this taken to private mail, please. So please direct any further insults there...

Nicole, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Italian football? I don't follow the Serie A *that* much. And besides which, you know darn well whatever threads I've started are about music, so nyah. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

....and I was thinking of posting a Friends:Classic or dud post today..

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

And why shouldn't you? We could discuss the theme song in minute, horrific detail, and it'd be music-related to the nth, and never speak of anything BUT the Friends theme song and the relative merit of whatever that band was called.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

We could also discuss that they go to Hootie and the Blofish concerts too...

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

And Phoebe's songs, of course. It'd be an entirely musical discussion, don't worry. I'll make sure of it.

Ally, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

As for the theme song, theres no point discussing it. The outcomes just too predictable. It'd get tore up quicker than a kleenex at a snot party. As for Phoebe's songs, they're BEYOND discussion.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i can't believe you stole that catchphrase from the general in that bad simpsons episode when it's obvious you should have stolen the garfield one.

ethan, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That was obviously a good Simpson episode cos Sideshow Bob was in it. I have no idea about the Garfield one but please enlighten me.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Actually "Best Simpsons episode" is an even better idea for a thread. I'd go for the "Gummi de milo" episode. A cultural artefact of the 20th century and the best piece of satire EVER. "There'll be no accusations just friendly crustaceans under the seeeea" (camera focuses in on turkey in the oven)..."And here we see Homer literally stewing in his own juices". Ah, legendary.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

no, there are good and bad sideshow bob episodes.

good sideshow bob episodes: the one where he marries selma, the one where he runs for mayor (the best one?), the one with the his brother from frasier

bad sideshow bob episodes: the cape fear one, the one you referred to, the recent one where he was trying to kill bart AGAIN even though he said he would never again in the previous sideshow bob episode.

the garfield thing was when the general is referring to sideshow bob and says 'well, we'll find him faster than garfield finds lasagna.' and then mayor quimby gives him a look and he's like 'sorry, my wife thought that was gangbusters.'

ethan, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

dude, that sexual harrassment episode sucked, except when dennis franz is playing homer in the tv movie. that 'under the sea' thing is like a joke from family guy or something.

ethan, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

WHAAAT! You're a crackhead, no bones about it. That episode came out well before "Family guy" started, which is only a Simpsoons rip-off anyway. Although, a damn funny one.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

i didn't mean that it was ripped off from 'family guy', i meant that it was a poor enough joke to be from it. a long time ago i would have used 'the critic' as my example of a bad simpsons episode, but i actually really like that show now after catching late-night reruns on comedy central. the sexual harrassment episode still blows. start the simpsons episode thread and lets have an argument about it.

ethan, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, alrighty then..

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

To get back to the topic for a moment, I've been thinking about all this and I reckon that a second forum is needed. Enough of a community has developed on here to warrant branching out on to topics besides music, but rather than just sitting on my arse and moaning I volunteer to set one up myself - problems being I don't know how to or how much (if at all) it costs. Could someone point me in the right direction?

DG, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Actually, I don't think anyone's going to read down this far, so I'll start a new topic.

DG, Thursday, 7 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

How far? You mean, this far?

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 25 April 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

This is my greatest thread ever, do you see the things I said on here? Holy shit, I was like the Valley Girl Yoda. If I recall correctly, the thread title that offended me so greatly was "Ally and Otis's Special Fite Thread" or something like that.

Why are we reviving all these irrelevant things?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 April 2003 18:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know, it's like ILWhite Stripes!!!

I just wondered what happened, if nothing, to the proposed 'blog threads'?

yeah i think the blog threads are a good idea, sort of an ongoing article response type thing...
