If it's any consolation, I downloaded a Cure song as well.

To sum up, it's one of the most embarrassing hits of a middling hard rock band who were neither hard nor rock by this point. An almost adult-contemporary ballad built over ridiculous panned bell-like synth sounds. About how she means everything to him and how he's sad he has to leave her. It was the only track by them on mp3mtv.com. And I've played it probably five times today. I think it's all about the hooks in the airbrushed chorus (the switch at "had enough" then repeated at "giving up").

oh man. Cornerstone was one of the last records I bought before going new wave/punk. You listen to it now (theoretically - I sold it well before college) and marvel at how full of themselves they were. If I recall, "Lights" was about how they'll continue to rock and roll, even as their friends and colleagues tell them to slow down and pace themselves. And there are at least a couple of post-baby-boomer cautionary tales, and one of the worst political rhymes ever written ("I had my car and I made the scene/Didn't give a damn about no gasoline/Oh no/Well, they can go to hell"). Am I making this more interesting than it actually was?

Sundar - You were supposed to give me a cd of your own stuff? I suppose we might have had that conversation and I just can't remember it due to beer (though I'm surprised that you would either!) - that trade works in any case. My one and only Styx CD now has your name on it.

Hm, they WERE very close together, but you're right about True Colours coming first...but only by a couple months (Paradise Theatre was released in January of 1981, and Split Enz was in late October of 1980). They were both from A&M though, which is probably why they both got the laser etching.

That ABBA moment reminds me of when on Styx' "Behind the Music", Tommy Shaw brags that he got the nod to join the band because he could hit the high note on "Lady". Nice one, Al. Oh, and speaking of "Al"...one of the worst songs ever is "You Can Call Me Al."
