Apparently this was published in the letters section of January's JazzTimes.

----

"Here we go again, another hardass, lame jazz critic, Aaron Steinberg,
who probably works at McDonald's during the day and was way off base
with some bullshit comments [CD Reviews, Al DiMeola's Flesh on Flesh,
Nov. '02]! With asinine comments, like "Al DiMeola attempts to marry
Latin sounds to his familiar fusion." Excuse me Mr. Hardass jazz
critic, but I didn't *attempt* this! It was done rather successfully!
Your personal view is rather idiotic and way off especially with
comments like calling the work a "Glossy, lightweight, inorganic
artificat." I don't make easy-listening smooth jazz. Never did! In fact with comments like yours, I am really surprised you are in the business of reviewing! This work was done as a band live in the studio with great sprit and tremendous attention to composition. Just because it is not loose and free every f'n moment like a lot of you hardass jazz critics like, doesn't give you the right to paste a false impression in review statements that are completely brainless! This music is quiet opposite from what you say! Jackoffs like you are way out of line and in your case clearly unqualified to do the task of writing reviews! Hopefully for you they have night hours as well at McDonald's for you, as you may need them soon!

a-hem, can any ilm'er in all honesty claim that s/he's heard a reasonably good dimeola album dating from... early-1980s onwards?

(...our 'puter being taken over for a while by my daughter, i checked cook & morton's "jazz on cd", 5th edition - no dimeola entry there, tellingly)

'Snoring Through A Dream'! Ha ha ha!

"attempts" is asking for this kind of crackback, unless the writer goes on to say that elsewhere [xyz] does the marrying tremendously successfully by comparison

I forget; what are the good pre-1980 DiMeola albums?

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It's good to know that Dime-Ola is keeping up the classy cover art, just like on Kiss My Axe! Man, that guy is great!

Kris, i tend to forget too! -- but i recall this eighteen- or twenty-yr-ol' person (bearing my name, let alone partly resemblin' me!) once actually listenin' to some dimeola ...wait, i've to refreshen me memory regardin' those titles!

...okeh, 'elegant gypsy', 'land of the midnight sun','splendido hotel'
what precisely impressed the 18-or-20 year old (who was a coupla years short of meeting his new friends who started pushin' the occasional miles, mingus, ornette, etc palatter his way) is not completely comprehensible to me now. but i'm sort of 'alf-sure it must've been that effectively-packaged rocky-riff-flashi'-latin-referencin'-jazz-tinged t'ing, the whole caboodle really

i think i'd not object to listening to some of 'friday night in san francisco' these days (if i had it) - but then that's not only dimeola...

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I had "Elegant Gypsy" and "Friday Night in Dan Francisco" when I was like 16 or 17 (both easy dollar bin finds). I kept reading things about what an amazingly fast guitar player DiMeola was, but I didn't even like them then.

I'm waiting for his Music to Cut Lamely Through Sizzler Steaks By.
